HI- does anybody know if a full concert was recorded by Japanese tv when the Rats toured in 1980?
A live version of Diamond Smiles appeared on Youtube so I presume a full concert was recorded but I have no more information and always wondered if this concert remains in the vaults of some tv corporation.
The image quality of the Diamond Smiles excerpt was excellent and the band seemed to be wearing sort of overalls - they may have thought they were in China. As Geldof sang "I'd stay at home today/ but the world said Go Man Go...."

Yes, they recorded the whole gig and it is superb.
Despite the fact that I'm a huge Rats fan I've never gone down the road of collecting loads of bootlegs and live recordings. If I did who knows where it would end- like some sort of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder!
Its good to know the whole gig was recorded but maybe the local fans were disappointed to see the band wearing factory overalls rather than decedent Western rock'n'roll clothing.
Anyway it's brilliant to know the recording is available.

I suppose if you contact BTR by pm he may provide more information. I am fairly clueless about the whole bootlegging side of things so wouldn't know where to ask for Rats Class A!
I did a cursory search of the net before the original post but it wasn't too thorough.
I was wondering if the whole of the Middlesex Poly set from 1978 the so called Rock Goes to College series is available?
All this talk of "illegal goods" reminds me of a great song by Denim from the nineties It Fell Off The Back Of A lorry!
The Rock Goes To College episode with the Rats was shown on BBC4 a few years ago.
I think this concert was recorded before Rat Trap got to number one by a few months hence the crowd seem a bit nonreactive or maybe they were just stoned or drunk on two pints of cheap beer.
I've only seen the Rat Trap segment. Must have been interesting Geldof possibly thinking these students are doing the right thing getting an education and the students thinking" Sod this I could form my own band and be a star like Geldof."
Anyway it's an interesting piece of musical archaeology. It seems more readily available than the mysterious Japanese concert.
I'm not sure where my copy of the Rats in Japan video is - not seen it for years, and I dunno how to get it on to a computer.
Years ago, I was told by a fan in Canada that he had a video of the Rats playing a gig in Canada in 80 or 81 (he said that it was the Mondo tour) and that it had been shown on Canadian TV.

Diamond Smiles was uploaded by somebody called Cheryumin so I presume anyone interested could drop him/her a message via Youtube. Cheryumin lives in Japan and may have more info on the whole concert in Tokyo and it's availability.
A Canadian Rats video. Definitely a case for the Mounties to investigate.
