Geldof claims that Do The Know Its Christmas was originally a song rejected from the Long Grass period and he just changed the words to suit the evolving situation in Ethopia.
I can't imagine how the song would have been with different lyrics and I don't rate Do They Know.. much . Of course it didn't matter if the charity song was good or not once it was decent- its musical merits weren't of too much concern.
Johnnie Fingers when being interviewed with Geldof on Irish radio said he didn't remember the original "version". I'm just curious as to the subject matter of the song before it became Do They Know..
I heard Midge interviewing Bob on Radio 2 a couple of years ago and they discussed the song. Bob wrote it quickly and Midge thought it was too twee - think I might have seen TV interviews saying the same - Midge showed how Bob's tune went and then he changed it to the version we know...
When Geldof claims he did something or was somewhere, it ain't necessarily so. That said wouldn't surprise me if the song was a Rats reject given the speed with which the song was brought together. Maybe not the greatest song ever, but the template for umpteen charity songs, with the individual lines, and the slow build up to the group chant at the end. We are the World is essentially the same song as are other adapted charity songs like Perfect Day.

Geldof said on the radio interview the song was originally called It's My World. Presume the chorus was originally 'it's my world' becoming 'feed the world'. To be honest it is one of Geldof's worst songs. The sentiment behind the song makes it tolerable. One really interesting thing is seeing the Boomtown rats 'perform' the song on The Tube on the Rats On Film DVD.
I've never seen them look so disinterested and half embarrassed, so I doubt the other Rats were much impressed musically. Geldof of course hams it up, but he had written countless brilliant songs in the past- unfortunately the public would get to associate him with this inferior product however worthwhile the cause behind it was.
Re Perfect Day- loved the idea of all these celebrity turns singing a song about scoring drugs and waiting for the man. Subversive.

Funniest thing I've ever seen, ie actually fell off the chair laughing, was on Mrs Merton show (Xmas 1997?) when they did a rendition of Perfect Day with all the old ladies in audience singing a line. Brilliant!

The old ladies were perhaps high on prescription drugs?
