Britpop! Ten years on....

... did anyone catch the recent Britpop night on BBC4 recently? Pretty much confirmed that Pulp were the best of the bunch (Common People, the ultimate Britpop theme), watching Damon Albarn poncing around as a country squire and Oasis and their Dad rock.

And this week, Oasis are number one, with Albarn's Gorillaz (aided by Shaun Ryder) looking likely to dispose them from the top.

NME Originals Britpop mag (well worth £6),  gives Suede credit for kicking the whole thing off. And reviews of all the key moments.

Q magazine's tribute to all things British had A Day in the Life the best British song ever. For once I agree with the Beatles topping a poll!

And the legacy...

Franz Ferdinand, the Futureheads, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party and the Libertines (from the Suede/Blur/Pulp camp) OR

Embrace, Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol (from the Oasis camp)

Sorry I wasn't able to watch that here, I would have loved it. I think we wrote about that before ArrGee, but here (Germany) the "battle" between Oasis and Blur/Pulp/Suede was never much of a topic. Those who knew them loved them all...

My "Britpop" summer was '96 - can't believe it's nearly ten years ago!

Interesting to put them into categories like that. Is this what the music papers say or is this your personal impression?

I love Coldplay and Keane, but I find Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs much more exciting. In that analogy, it fits that I always thought Blur were better than Oasis, and that Pulp played yet in another league!

A bit of both. Certainly the music press has banged on about the Oasis legacy and that they are still around as a bad thing (I'm more ambivalent), but have not really looked at the art school influence in a clutch of bands that are coming through.

I agree that Franz Ferdinand, the Futureheads, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party et al are more interesting.

And that Pulp were in another league

I totally agree on that. Never really liked Oasis:hmm, but Blur is good.

Is Albarn in the Gorillaz. If so, I thought it sounded like him, but I wasn't sure.

Common people is a very good song.
