24: Bob Geldof, 50

NI_MPU('middle');

BOB GELDOF had to admit that he wasn’t a famous enough musician to warrant a spot on Live 8, but as activist he is second to none. Already best known as the force behind Live Aid two decades ago — which earned him an honorary knighthood in 1986 — he returned full-time to campaigning last year, producing Band Aid 20, the biggest-selling single of 2004. His plans for a Hyde Park charity concert mushroomed into ten huge events around the world after almost every big name in rock and pop agreed to take part. Although he was criticised for the lack of African artists on the Live 8 bill, Geldof can claim to have helped in the doubling of developmental aid to Africa and the cancellation of some countries’ debts.
