Curious about Leslie Sheppard

Was curious to know a bit more about the Leslie Sheppard person who wrote How To Compose so did a bit of admittedly amateur Internet type research.

Seems the same person also wrote a book  called Tinnitus- all you want to know about this distressing condition.

As well LS {not sure whether male or female} wrote a book about the  famous violinist Paganini.

Sheppard seems to have had a business selling musical instruments in Burgess Hill  Sussex in the 1950's . How To Compose was first published in 1935.

So maybe Bob will head down to Burgess Hill to play a gig there in honour of Leslie!

Leslie William Sheppard (1907-1993) was a British military musician and later a successful civilian musician and instrument retailer. You can read more about his early career at:

Talk about degrees of separation. From The Boomtown Rats to the Coldstream Guards band!

Geldof makes some sarcastic handwritten comments on Mr Shepard's methodology in composing these great or acceptable songs as can be seen in the liner notes on the cd. Unfortunately the writing is hard to read, but we get Bobs drift.

Somehow I think Leslie might have approved of Another Piece Of Red by The Boomtown Rats. But would he get the irony?

Interestingly the Les Shepard mentioned in the Coldstream Guards piece was sent to Ireland by the British army around 1920  when he was about 17 years old and was stationed in County Clare.

We must have all done this.  I spotted the tinnitus books too.  I wonder what advice he'd give to Bob about his music.
