Not too familiar with GM's music but it is sad. Thin Lizzy were one of the first Irish bands to make it in the UK and largely were supportive of the Boomtown Rats.
A Bob Geldof tribute to Gary has appeared on the Internet, and they were more or less contemporaries, both being in their late fifties.
