ii) Briquette changed his name from Patrick Cusack, presumably thinking Briquette was more rock'n'roll   Never thought of the bogs as rock 'n' roll!


iii) Most interestingly, "He [Pete/Paddy] married Stiff star Jane Aire and co-wrote the unreleased second single for Kirsty, You caught me out with Kirsty and Simon Crowe. The Rats also played on the single."

1)  ArrGee - You bought the box set for that one track, didn't you?


2)  I think Peat Briquette is more rock 'n roll.


3)  I really haven't a clue what either a bog or peat is.  Earth that burns and can still be used as a roofing material?  I don't understand any part of that.


Edited to add - well, I guess wood burns and is used as a building material.....hmmmm.

 Well, I am tempted to.  But not because of that one track. I happen to like Kirsty MacColl.  Saw her live a few years ago, and the diversity of her music is quite incredible.  Bit like a femaile Elvis Costello.


Oddly enough she is famous for her cover versions (Days/New England/Perfect Day/You Just Haven't Earned It Yet ...) and singing with other bands (Pouges - Fairy Tale of NY; Happy Mondays - Hallellujah; Smiths - Ask) than for her own compositions (Guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis, perhaps her best known).  Again ironically enough, They Don't Know is better known for the cover by Tracey Ullman, than her original.


Sadly missed.

Elvis Costello - check.  Elvis Presley - check.  Tracey Ullman...sings?  Everything else you mentioned is a mystery (although I think I heard Fairytale of NY once, don't know who performed it).

The wikipedia link shows once again how some things just don't translate well across the ocean.  We're used to that sort of campaign crap, it's nonsense we expect and tolerate.  I think I remember hearing about that headline, though.


Who is Freddie Starr and whose hamster did he eat?  Is this record industry lore like Ozzy and the bat, who was it - Alice Cooper? -  and the chicken, the Rats and the rats?  (sidenote - may the souls of my childhood hamsters, Snoopy and The Red Baron rest in peace forever.  I'd be traumatized if Freddie Starr, whoever he is, had eaten them!)

Never heard Move Over Darling by Doris Day? My Guy's Mad At Me is Madness's My Girl's Mad at Me.  Apparently Tracey Ullman also covered You Caught Me Out http://www.rreini.com/tracey/discog.htm and made #8 in the Billboard chart with They Don't Know.


We got two of them.  Eat It and Like a Surgeon!  The promos were great and shown a lot, but I'm not sure anyone bought the records.

Don't think I HAVE heard the Doris Day, but it's possible that I just don't remember.  The others, of course, not a clue.


I don't know anyone who bought Weird Al over here, either.  But I guess someone must have.

I think the story goes that they all gave themselves ludicrous names, and peat briquette was one that stuck.  I think Fingers was another.


Only thing is he wasn't called that because it was more rock 'n' roll!
