Proposed Rats/Geldof mingle in London
Permalink

Ian would like to set up a social gathering for Rats/Geldof fans.

The bobgeldof.com Mingle - Ian Gibbons from bobgeldof.com is kicking an idea about.   Now we have active Facebook and Twitter profiles, there could be an opportunity to have regular events when likeminded fans of the Rats/Geldof come together (isn't that a Beatles track, Ian?) and just socialise.  Ian has had vast experience as a promoter of both indie / folk / acoustic stuff for more years than he cares to admit.  The idea is quite simple, maybe twice a year we use the opportunity to display rare items of memorabilia etc... and possibly some interesting live performances. He is looking for feedback on this to see if there is enough interest to start the planning process.  Ideas are welcome.  He thought the first event, if people want this, should be in London, perhaps at the Hope & Anchor in Islington, or, after Ian's recent visit to the Cobden Club, that might be a great venue. Ian said 'I know many people, such as Ian Westwood, that have a treasure trove of Rats memorablia, I have quite a lot of stuff myself that most people have never seen or heard.  I thought we could have guest DJ's playing during the event and possibly finish it of with some interesting live performances.  If there is enough inteerest I will put the idea to Gerry Cott, Martin Stephenson, of course Tina. Can you email indicate by email your level of interest to tina@bobgeldof.com

This sounds like a good idea and  London is probably the most appropriate location for it to take place in.

Most bands have fan conventions when the fans get together occasionally. My second favourite band XTC, have soirees in Swindon every few years and this attracts people from all over the world. XTC have lots of American and Canadian fans as well as fans  from here.

Now we just need to  audition for a Rats tribute band for the night or maybe something even better might turn up. You never know.

We all know that 2000 plus would turn up at the drop of a hat if Geldof and the Rats put in an appearance.

Again, may I ask why Ian does not propose this directly?

I know this idea has been knocked around a couple of times in the past both from Geldof.info and www.boomtownrats.co.uk and nothing came of it.  It sounds like a good idea, but I can't see why anyone would go down the pub to look at an inflatable cucumber.  Maybe happyfanclubitalia may think differently smile

IF (a big if) something like this was to happen it would have to be in conjunction with a concert by Geldof or The Rats.   Thanks to the new Rats, these "mingles" have occurred in the last couple of years and I have met about half a dozen or so others on the forum.  I know a few others have bumped into each other at Geldof gigs.

Now I may go to the Hope & Anchor on a Saturday night if I was coming back from Highbury and have a look in, but there is no chance of me making any special effort to attend unless it was going to be followed by a gig at the Garage, the Union Chapel or even the Hope & Anchor itself.

The idea of the mingle is just that it is a social event, something for people to enjoy getting together and each others company.  I never had in mind an event to promote Bob, The Rats, or the like.  It was just to try and do something nice. The fact that some people might be interested in bits and bobs of memorabilia and rare demos etc is just a plus.

The idea of the DJ - a few of us could take to the decks and play some Feelgood, Marley, Clash, Pistols etc etc.........  Just a nice way to spend en evening.  Dont think there would be any need to have a venue bigger than the Hope & Anchor.  But good things can come from little gatherings.

I think an acoustic set by Gerry would make for an interesting night, like wise Martin Stephenson and Tina herself.

Being London based we might get a few of the band members pop in, who knows.  But if I didn't explain this correctly - this is about the various members who like the Rats, Geldof and in ArrGee's and my case Saint Julian (dont know how we could squeeze that in lol).

So hope that clear it up.  If you want to discuss anything about this stuff, then my phone number is 07908 695543.

You should have come to Whyteleafe, it was more or less what you are describing.  Thing is I don't think suss can treat us to that all the time.

Can't pretend the Whyteleafe gig wasn't an entirely self-indulgent treat for me, but was really chuffed how many on here travelled from not so near and downright far to support it, particularly as I only joined the forum less than a year ago. Peter did ask (only half in jest I like to think) if I wanted to make it an annual thing. Wouldn't completely rule out doing it again I have to say. We'll see.

Don't want to interfere with the new 'mingle' plans in the meantime though. Sounds like it could be a good night. Those old badges might get one more airing after all.

I'd also be happy to ship up with DJ gear and CDs with no post 1980 tracks (a la Whyteleafe) if Ian or Tina are reading this,

It would be great if we could take it in turns to host a rats gig.  The price is probably out of my league.  And my local football club is eeerrmm the Kassam Stadium.  We are back to filling it up in the thousands.  biggrinconfuse Not sure where to find thousands of people...

Just noted on RAM site that Rats are lined up to play at Clapham Grand on Friday 24/6. Must be a good opportunity for a number to meet up I'd guess. Good rail links to Clapham Junction from south and south west.

Hope to see several there.

I can't see that.  Interestingly, they play 4 gigs in 2 days at the end of May!  Afternoon and evening I guess.  Wes will have to do some serious driving smile

The Clapham gig really was listed - just to quell any suggestion that Suss was going mad before his impending exile  biggrin - it was on RAM site yesterday morning but by lunchtime had disappeared!  Shame - it would have been easy to travel there ....

Re: the Farnborough gig end of May, I am hoping it goes ahead, but there was meant to be one there LAST May at local football club but it got cancelled due to "licensing issues".  So hoping it might happen this year instead.

Yes, looks like that.    I thought that date would work as it's half term.  It is also London Marathon day.  Arsenal are playing.  And the Hope and Anchor had nothing booked.

Anyway, after seeing the initial idea of the mingle I went searching and found http://www.bugbearbookings.com/ are the organisation who run the Hope & Anchor and Dublin Castle.   They may be interested in staging a gig by the Rats IF (a big if) there is enough interest.

I haven't approached them nor the Rats, but given suss's great promotion, I reckon that it should not be beyond a few of us to do likewise.  I haven't got a clue how much the Rats would cost (suss will know), but it should be possible to book them and earn enough on the door.

But it will have to be more than two of us smile

For noel, there is an XTC tribute this weekend at the Dublin Castle if you fancy flying in.  noelindublincastle smile

Life Begins At The Hop....

Tribute bands.A shower of ****e? Or a good nite out once a few shandies have gone down the gullet? Well, theyll never be a cool phenomenon thats for sure and although we have been known to feature the odd nifty one here at Buggerbear (The Smiths, New Order, The Clash..) we generally give them as wide a berth as we would Simon Bowell with a fistful of exposed reactor rods (as it goes two things worthy of an introduction. In fact why not just have the high trousered one lowered onto the offending Fukushima site to smother the danger with his capacious ego?).

One digresses. There is an exceptionally cool tribute band, and they perform for you in The Dublin Castle on Saturday 26th March. Fossil Fools doncha knowcool because the subjects of their superb homage have not given full vent in a live staged setting for 30 years themselves

Yes were talking XTC, whose head honcho Andy partridge got so mangled by da biz, pre-stage nerves and general angst that the poor simple Wiltshire lad was destroyed by agonizing stomach complaints, nervous exhaustion and valium addiction. Valium?! It was my great pleasure to witness not one but two of their Swindon town homecoming Christmas gigs back in the day and the boy Partridge was like a man possessed. If thats how he performed on downers fook knows what would have happened had his medicine cabinet gotten somehow mixed up with Mark E Smiths or Johnny Lydons in some crazee post punk sitcom scenario

Anyway, Andy gave up the stage and we all shed a tear..so heres yer chance to exchange those salty drips of woe for ones fashioned outta pure joy. Tickets still available right about here

Ah, XTCsuch a rich seam of Cotswold stone packed full of multifarious pop oolite from the quirk n jerk new waved Statuesque Liberty years thru the Anglo folk Settlement era and the lush 60s tinged psychedlics of their autumnal period. Which album will they hit us with tonite? I fancy Drums and WiresStupidly Happy anywhichwaygreat contemporary support too..

The music of XTC was essentially an organic beast but we have a lot of time for the cyber sensational here at Bugbear. We suggest you come and check out our new Robot Factory nite in The Hope and Anchor for a thrilling session of electronica, post punk, blipcore and cold waves. The amazing Bosons are over from Perth, Oz to headline the next bash on March 21st and they truly are awe inspiring electronic artists whose laptop decks and FX techno crunching neo dub step references all sorts from Underworld to Ultramarine to Burial. Awesome stuff. Get in touch and well let you in CHEAP!

XTC get together in London sounds like fun. Was very disappointed with the XTC tribute album A Testimonial Dinner which came out a number of years ago so I hope the acts paying homage are a bit better- but I suppose its the fact that people care enough is the important thing.

Out of curiosity as they say I've got no idea of how Geldof rates XTC or how Andy Partridge rated The Boomtown Rats. The were both contempories starting out in 1977- don't know if their paths ever crossed.

There is film of Youtube of Andy walking off the stage in Paris in March 1982  during the brilliant Respectable Street- leaving the band in the  lurch! Constant touring for any band is not a good idea.

Lack of awareness in my case rather than lack of interest. Will have to be Brentwood I guess unless there's an opportunity in meantime.

Thanks to Lisa for confirming I wasn't dreaming the Clapham listing. Shame that's gone as that's a very easy one for me.
