Has Africa had it now?

Have we blown it? Or can we salvage something through the UN, who have let us down before? What do you think? I'm desperately hoping something will be salvaged over the next month or so. But if it isn't Africa won't be so high on the agenda at the next G8.

Looking back, it is clear when the tide turned on Britain's year for Africa. The four bombs in the London rush hour on the morning of July 7 marked the high water mark of the west's cooperation on development and things have never been quite the same since.

The terrorists timed their attacks to coincide with the G8 Gleneagles summit and at a moment when Tony Blair was euphoric after the previous day's announcement that London had won the 2012 Olympics. The government had put in months of hard work to chivvy the other G8 nations into an agreement to make debt relief more generous, substantially increase aid flows and push forward reform of the global trading system to make it easier for developing countries to export. The idea was relatively simple. At Gleneagles, the G8 would come up with proposals that would govern policy towards Africa for the next decade; these would then be submitted to the special session of the United Nations, which took place last week. It was assumed, optimistically as it turned out, that the deal could be extended beyond the G8 and, more importantly, that a plan of action would be agreed to put into practice what had been agreed at Gleneagles.

We can salvage something from th UN its just what and how much.This year is an ideal opportunity to help and we must seize the chance.Tony needs to make sure something is done.

It shouldn't have to be salvaged should it? It should have all been done and dusted. Can we trust the UN even if they do approve and agree to issues? Will they carry it through? How can Tony Blair ensure that it all happens?

I'm really hoping that something will be done. Any step is a good step, but we need much more than has already been agreed to make a real real difference.

we just need a good solid promise.if we have that then its secure.a promise that they will do what they can to help.i know theres other terrible things going on right now but africa is in desperate need and has been for years.i saw an article in the news the other day and it compared an african child to one suffering from hurricane katrina.the african was holding three grains of rice and the american was holding a cheese burger.and dont get me wrong i feel a lot of sympathy for the hurricane victims but the difference in aid is ridiculous, particularly when africa has suffered for decades and all they get is a few grains of rice.its heartbreaking

Tango we need more than promises, too many of those can be broken. We need action NOW and commitment. No withdrawing from promises, money where their mouths are and not hidden clauses to promises too.

Usually optimistic but I'm pretty down at the moment as far as Africa getting the aid that was promised. Just a note, there's a pretty good website http://www.wn.com for all kinds of world problem news, including some coverage of SIr Bob addressing the small UN forum. Tomorrow in Washington we are having a protest against drilling for oil in the arctic wildlife refuge areas (Inuit & G'witchin lands) where caribou migrate. I expect there could be some other groups protesting. It's going to rain & thunderstorm so unluckily the crowd may be tiny, plus it's on a weekday. It's my day off from work so I'll be there, West lawn of the Capitol 11 am to 1 pm. The website for the no-drilling group is http://www.ArcticRefugeAction.org.   Sorry the world is getting so divided between haves & have nots, and money is separating us. I hope the world pulls itself back together!! What a year this has been!

im disgusted that they said theyd give some of the aid to iraq instead.


1.they started it


2.Africa have been suffering far worse for far longer


3.The way the Iraqi people are treating our troups, do they really deserve it?The clip of them setting the tank on fire and the soldiers jumping out actually burning, that made me sick!
