So did ya miss me?


Just back after a month away from the olde desk! Holiday was fantastic!!


Cape Town - went to Robben Island (and was shown round by a former ANC prisoner that was there when Mandela was in prison - really interesting). Also went up Table Mountain - views from the top spectacular!


Perth (WA) - lovely city, relaxed and great weather! Went to Fremantle and then up to the Pinnacles rock formations (about 3 hours from Perth). Stunning!


Sydney - has become really busy since the last time I visited (4 years ago). Still, done the opera house tour this time and over to the zoo. Still think it's the best city in the world!


Alice Springs - a bit of a tourist trap. Arrived the day before the Henley on Todd (dry river boat race...yes, they carry the boat!!). Was also a Harley Davidson meeting so about 1500 Harleys!!


Camping in the outback - highly recommended. A truly magical experience - heard dingoes the first night after watching the sun set on Uluru. Watched the sun rise over the rock and walked round (didn't climb as respect the local aboriginal view not to climb). Also did a 3.5hr climb walk round Kings Canyon - a brilliant place that is often overlooked by the general tourist to that area visiting the rock.


Cairns - busy as ever but even more so as it was their festival so watched a parade at night and a massive firework display. Went to the reef (really choppy water so other half was    )


Hong Kong - arghhhhhh!! what a place Far too many people...actually pretty scary (and I've been to Bangkok!). But the bargains were amazing - just hope my bank manager agrees with me!!


All in all, the best holiday I've had I think! Now back to reality and the 9to5?!?!

sounds like you've had fun.id love to go to cape down.my dad used to work in S.A. for a few years and he has very strong views about the civil rights at the time and has past these on to me so i really admire nelson mandela.hes an amazing man.the africans rock

Alison, welcome back! Did you hear any traditional music in CapeTown? What was on the radio? How about food? Crafts??

Stayed at the Table Bay Hotel (well expensive but worth every penny!) so there was some african bands down at the V&A waterfront area playing to the tourists.


Food was brilliant - went to the Green Dolphin so had the fish dish - crayfish, prawns, plus a fish a have no idea of it's name (tasty though!).


Also went to Greenmarket Square so got a painting by a local artist of the "townships" - bright colours (acrylic on canvas) plus a painted leather belt and wrist band. Bought a leather collar (painted) for our dog.


Biggest expense there was a tanzanite ring - supposed to be one of the rarest stones in the world (sort of purple / blue) set in white gold. Cost a fortune but the insurance certificate is for almost double what I paid for it - just hope Mr Bank Manager loves it as much as I do!!


It was chilly (17 degrees) but sunny so jeans and T-shirt type weather - perfect. Would defo go back there as there's much more I'd have liked to have seen (it was whale watching time but never had enough days to travel down to Hermanus to see them - maybe another time).


Also got some aboriginal art while in Oz and a sheepskin coat that I got for a quarter of it's price as the place was moving and they wanted to get rid of as much stock as possible. Had to send some things back by post (there's a box on a boat someplace with my washing in it!!) and was STILL over the 20kg limit British Airways impose (how come Quantas and the other airlines allow 32kgs?!?).


Fantastic holiday and would recommend any of the countries visited..everyone was very friendly and there wasn't the paranoia that the US has over people coming in to their country (we spoke to an Australian that had gone to the US on business and was subjected to a rectal examination at immigration control - even though he had all the paperwork, return tickets etc - not how you treat guests to your country!!)
