No, maybe the smaller theatres is the right thing for Bob to do at this stage of his career. I can't really imagine him in a big 2000+ concert hall anymore anyway.

I could make a poll biggrin I guess it depends on the ticket price. Tickets for Lincoln are £25.

Hopefully none will be cancelled. After all it is only five dates and there is a wide geographic spread (well except Croydon/London), so I guess fans can travel. Shame for Jules though, none near Oxford.

Not sure if the largely mediocre songs of How To Compose is gonna get the people of Newcastle or Lincoln out for a Geldof gig but you never know. The tour is taking place six months after the album release which is a little odd- but then Bob is a busy man.

Feel a bit likewarm about the whole thing because How To Compose really disappointed me. Remember a few London gigs from the Veggies of Love tour when there were pretty decent crowds and a good album to promote. Somehow its all gone Pete Tong in the meantime.

At least playing in small theatres is a good call. Just think the gap between Geldof the public figure/activist has totally overshadowed his musical career and most people just don't know almost any of his non Boomtown Rats songs. The trick is trying to fill the gap in peoples knowledge but I don't know how that can be done unless people have continued to follow his musical career- which does not generally seem to be the case. Still with a bit of good publicity I hope these gigs are successful.

Given there have been precious few gigs from Geldof, the fans will travel from far and wide, and will account for some of the audience, but the trick is to get those who are indifferent to fork out £25.

I really hope he adds some Irish dates or even dates in Liverpool or Manchester later in the week of 21st as I will be there then. Well I'm planning on being there but going to hold off booking my flights incase he does decide to cross the Irish Sea following the Lincoln gig!

The Sage at Gateshead is only making tickets available on the ground floor initially (with first and second floors closed) so they clearly have some doubts on his ability to pull in the audience. That said, on the SAD tour it was about 2/3rds full on all floors and ended with a standing ovation after a storming set including numerous Rats tracks.

For those who don't know the Sage, it is a superb modern architectural building, purpose built concert hall with alledgedly the best acoustics in Europe so its your chance to hear the big man as he really sounds. However, £26.50 including booking fee may be asking a bit too much of non-committed locals.

Not going. Will be in St. Albans for 1st Oct. When push comes to shove, beer always wins the argument. I think I am Homer Simpson..

Curiosity has got the better of me. Difficult to find excuse not to venture as far as Croydon when you live about 5 miles away. Not sure of venue capacity, but would imagine it's at least 4 figures.

I've never seen Bob since Rats, and only have This Is The World Calling (plus those tracks on Loudmouth or whichever best of compilation it was with Rats and Geldof) so will no doubt be hearing some songs for first time.

Hope to meet some people from here maybe.

Incidentally, for those planning a 2 week holiday in Croydon biggrin to take in the event (oh yeah, and the world is due to end today), Peter Barton (current Rats) is due at same venue (different stage) with The Animals on 7th Sept.

I am going to Croydon. Bob is electric live, he makes you hair stand on end, just totally hyper and full of energy. Pete is still brilliant on guitar and the whole band rock. They still do a fair few Rats songs and often have a request session.

Scottie, I'll be in C20. Opted to go fairly close partly for atmosphere and partly cos my eyesight's not what it was.

For anyone else thinking of booking, row G is where the seats start to slope at Ashcroft, and row I is, appropriately, considered the eye level row.

Also, if it helps anyone, Croydon Travelodge is about 200 yards from venue, Jury's Inn about 500 yards, and Croydon Park Hotel (bit more pricy) is about 500 yards also, and nearest to East Croydon station. Station is about 10 minute walk tops, with very frequent services from London (12 miles) or Gatwick (about 25 miles).

If you're trying to get in touch with your inner Geldof my choice of album is either Sex Age Death [2001] or The Vegetarians of Love [1990]. I'd like to think that these two recommendations are good enough to stand up as worthy albums by any artist.The have certainly brought me lots of pleasure over the years. They are admittedly more grown up and mature works. Some of us just can't let go of Bob!

If you do go you'll get the chance to see two Rats Geldof and Briquette[Pete is still the bass player] and Geldof does his fair share of Rats songs. Admittedly I have to pick carefully through his five album output for the stuff I really like but he has written at least thirty pretty decent songs that I have happily lived with since the Rats breakup.

BTW the song called Crazy on the Rats compilation is one of his worst-a duet with Sting, no less, so its not too indicative of what he is capable of.

Try My Birthday Suit on Youtube, or Crucified Me- more in line with his real talent as a songwriter.

I suspect the new album will comprise much of the set. I guess it should be much the same as the Hay set in a couple of weeks. I haven't been to a Geldof gig, for numerous reasons, but the ones I have seen/heard broadcast all seem pretty good, even if he does too much solo stuff for my liking. The biggest shame is most of the gigs are seated. The videos of the MTV Italia gigs should be knocking around somewhere which will give you some idea of what to expect.

And, of course, Geldof will do I Don't Like Mondays smile

Went to a gig at Fairfield Halls Croydon last night (Ashcroft Theatre is part of the same venue) and word is that Bob's gig has done around 100 in advance sales. Might be worth keeping an eye out just in case it gets pulled, although I guess/hope that would have happened by now if it was likely.

Not a massive issue for me (not being quite the diehard fan and only 10 minute drive away) but thought it worth warning those coming from far and wide.

Still gutted the Rats aren't playing the beer festival there at the start of October.
