Always wondered as the main songwriter with the Boomtown Rats if Bob Geldof composed the songs on guitar. He must have had some knowledge of chord progressions etc to come up with tunes and be credited as the songwriter.
Cant see him sitting 'round a piano composing Lookin' After No 1. Can anyone shed any light on this aspect of the Rats?

Nah, Ziggy did
He played it left hand (but strung for a right hander as he was learning on someone else's guitar at school), but yes I believe Geldof did compose some of the songs on guitar, at least the basic chords.
However, many of the songs seem to have been composed on the fly with the others in the band, which I believe was the cause of some of the issues with regard royalties.
Geldof did play guitar on some songs along with harmonica.

I should clarify that, it's perhaps a little too definite...
I believe he played guitar on some songs on the last album, almost certainly on Hold of Me and probably others, and he did play harmonica on the first two albums (Certainly did live).
I think he also made a few other noises on Mondo Bongo and V Deep. (the typewriter?? the phone ring! )
However, despite credits to the contary, he never played the saxophone. Well I don't think he did!
