I'm not a big fan of Annie's. I know too much insider gossip and I think her talent is vastly overrated. However, in the past 10 years or so, even I think she's gotten pretty good. I have an autographed book of hers, was given another book once as a Christmas present but returned it....(the person who gave it to me just assumed because I like music and was a photographer that I'd like Annie's pix of musicians, but that's not how it works). WHY can't you get this overseas (especially in Berlin - a big city with a fashion industry)?! I can get international editions of most everything in NYC! Expensive, yes - but not impossible. I don't have a flatbed scanner, so I can't scan it myself. I haven't even bought the mag, though I might. You're gonna hang it on YOUR WALL? Your poor husband!
Overrated? Hm, well you're the expert, I can only say I liked the (few) photos that I've seen! Maybe I haven't seen the good photographers, or possibly I couldn't even tell who was good and who wasn't... Who of the rock photographers do you like?
You're right, I probably should be able to get almost any international magazine here... I hadn't even started thinking about it, but I now I even have an idea where to look... At the station Berlin Zoo, and some other places too! Don't know if I'll make it there in the next couple of days...
Posters - I don't have any music posters on my walls. I used to have a close-to-lifesize cardboard Bob from a record shop (it was used as a display and had a tray holding CDs) in the old place, but after we moved he hasn't found a proper place. Don't think my husband would mind Bob'n'Bono somewhere here though!
I don't know, I never thought of photographers in terms of "rock photographers." I guess I'd have to see what the competition was. I'd lump rock photographers in with "portrait photographers" generally, and I don't think Annie is a great portrait photographer, I don't think most of the people I'd characterize as "rock" photographers are. It's one thing to take a photo of someone who is intrinsically interesting (because the person in the photograph is famous and therefore you're curious about them to begin with) and another to take a photo of someone who's not famous.
So...I'd go with the classics, the "rock stars" of American portrait photography - Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Mary Ellen Mark. There are others, but those are the most recognizable names of the people whose work I really admire.
