I know this is off topic, and I'm not sure if you're interested, but today is the international memorial (or would you say: rememberance?) day for all victims of the nationalsocialism (what the Nazis called themselves) between 1933 and 1945.
Today 61 years ago the survivors of the concentration camp in Auschwitz were freed by Russian soldiers. I attended a memorial meeting in the Deutsche Bundestag, the parliament of Germany today and a 93 year old survivor of that time talked about his memories. It was very moving.
So my track of the day (to get this back on topic!) is the "Carillion" by Karl A. Hartmann, a piece for four string instruments composed in 1933. It was played in the Bundestag and I was very much moved by that. Before '45, Hartmann's music was not allowed to be played because the Nazis considered it "degenerate art".
as a history student and general human being i'm quite discusted that holocaust memorial day has been so overshadowed by mozarts birthday!
still can't get over seeing stephen fry cry though.he's so, i don't know, he's like bob, he's someone i really admire, a hero and it's horrible to see someone like that hurt.
well i've been listening and watching videos from www.hughlaurie.net all day so possibly 'be nice:good ass mother liker', then again perhaps underthe weather-kt tunstall cos i'm ill
Thanks Tango mate- for the introduction to KT Tunstall, Just checked her out on line and discovered to my delight one hot chicklet. Zipping off to Boarders, mission to pick up a few of her albums.
hmm lets see.if you like her you might like kate rusby tho she is quite overly folky at times.most of the newish or rare bands that i like are a bit rocky-fall out boy, jimmy eat world, taking back sunday, simple plan, and the more indie bands like, the kooks, clor, the ordinary boys (hints of Madness here).
And what about The Ordinary Boys? I've heard nothing more than their single........Is the album worth a listen then Tango? I found all the participants on the latest BB offering really objectionable with the exception of their lead singer. Having said that, the fact he was on BB at all is a bit odd...........
jam-going underground cos everyones been playing 'london underground' on their mobiles
Hold on here! Paul Weller is the ENEMY of Geldof, I CANNOT permit any posts on The Jam/Style Council/Weller that show ANY praise or admiration for his work. What next? People will be having the Clash/Joe Strummer tracks of the day......
so London Calling, because I'm going back there tonight from Glasgow
Now, back to white boys for just a sec.... I was thinking about Stephen Stills the other day, in that whatever happened to/wasn't he fu*king underrated kind of way...and I decided to pull out the old vinyl because I needed to see if it really did hold up... Well, some of it doesn't but....some of it still leaves me speechless.
Stephen Stills (the self-titled album, (c) 1970), side 2, track 3 - "Black Queen" Five minutes and twenty eight seconds of a man and his acoustic guitar/singing/rock/blues bliss. To quote from the album's back cover "Was recorded live and the performance is courtesy of Jose Cuervo Gold Label Tequila."
That one track makes my all teenage years worthwhile.
well i hate to be a pain but i love the style council and the clash and i don't mind the jam either.obviously not as much as bob and the rats but still.
well i hate to be a pain but i love the style council and the clash and i don't mind the jam either.obviously not as much as bob and the rats but still. and thus i give you style council-walls come tumbling down
Right, Geldof will get to hear of this treachery. In his opinion, The Style Council is excretable. And you appear to disagree! Off to Geldof Hell with you!!!! (and it ain't a nice place).
My track of the day, as a Geldof loyalist, is Boomtown Rats Live at Hammersmith 1978 - a 70 minute MP3 track ripped from the DVD. Their finest hour! (and ten minutes).
Was Looking After No 1 on TOTP2, was their first appearance? I really want to see that again Maybe another letter to the BBC is in order I wonder what the date was that it was on? September 1997?
No 1 ought to be my track of the day, just remembering the day I first heard of Bob
Journey - Faithfully. I think this is a very pretty sounding song, especially toward the end when Perry is doing more 'woah'-ing and less word-ing. While the overall message is kinda sweet, the circus analogy is wretched ("Circus life/under the big top world/we all need the clowns/to make us smile"...LAME).
Plus, it's a song Robert Downey Jr. allegedly has/had on his ipod - and I like RDJ a lot.
the jam-thats entertainment.cos i'm effing bored i tell you BORED out of my tiny little mind.the only thing on the winter olympics is curling, which is sadly the only thing we have succeeded in recently!top gear winter olympics was far better
Well as all Mondays are the same for me right now I don't Like Mondays - again. Trouble is I don't like Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays either and this song doesn't cover that.
MAYBE 'ECHO BEACH' would be more suited to you at the mo-'why do we have to spend so much time at work, my job is very boring i'm an office clerk, the only thing that helps me pass the time away, is knowing i'll be back at echo beach someday'
Everybody Hurts - partly for a friend no longer with us (different one from the one who wrote the poems) and partly for the taking comfort in your friends
my mum's best friend's daughter, who's 18, has just been taken into hospital as she's having a baby so we've got her little brother here and my mum's off to the hospital.so due to the confusion today it shall be.kaiser chiefs-i predict a riot
well the baby was born, not naturally mind you, and it's a boy, hasnt got a name yet as his mum can't stay awake long enough.so today it's all american rejects-along
It's Cool for Cats - not about the song but because it really is cool for cats - those in a nice home anyway. I'm just watching mine, lazing around, being fed, not having to go out in the cold if they don't want. I think I'm envious...
a gospel song-bob of course.cos i've been watching house and its so sad.hugh laurie looks so sorry for himself when stacey's husbands around.aww.hes so schweet
i've been watching house again.the one with the gay hiv patient and cameron getting stoned and the like.but house is so cute in it.hugh laurie spends so long looking sad you just want to hug him.awwwwwwwww

i watched maybe baby last night and this song just fitted the mood this morning.the film was really good and would have been really sad if i hadn't kept giggling at hugh's beard (though it was only there for 10mins then he shaved)very good and worth a look
hihi, don't take all your books with you and your school bag won't be so heavy...
and don't forget to salute to 12.C oh yeah
when we started secondary school there was a competition for first years, for "rookies", with lost of funny games. and of course we have won it. and in the ecstasy of triumph we were singing We are The Champions...

Not sure the film is that good, but a great choice of song (certainly the best track on Hardcore, which in itself is a great album). Considering how young you are, I'm pleasantly surprised you appreciate it. It's more for the middle aged among us!
Watched "Silence of the Lambs" last night and I love the scene when this song is playing (where Buffalo Bill/Jame Gumb is 'performing' in front of his video camera). I felt the song was a good match for that scene.
ok today...hmm.our house *trails off into song* 'in the middle of our street our house'.i watched 2 hugh laurie interviews yesterday nd they always play it so its stuck in my head now
