"Who Would Jesus Bomb?" by David Rovics

I've seen you in the markets
I've seen you in the streets
And at your political convention
Talking of your crusade
Talking of your nation
And other things too terrible to mention
And you proclaim your Christianity
You proclaim your love of God
You talk of apple pie and mom
Well I've just got one question
And I want an answer
Tell me, who would Jesus bomb?

Maybe Jesus would bomb the Syrians
'Cause they're not Jews like him
Maybe Jesus would bomb the Afghans
On some kind of vengeful whim
Maybe Jesus would drive an M1 tank
And he would shoot Saddam
Tell me, who would Jesus bomb?

I've seen you on the TV
And on the battleships
I've seen you in the house upon the hill
And I've heard you talking
About making the world safer
And about all the men you have to kill
And you speak so glibly
About your civilization
And how you have the moral higher ground
While halfway around the world
Your explosives smash the buildings
Ah, if you could only hear the sound

But maybe Jesus would sell land mines
And turn on his electric chair
Maybe Jesus would show no compassion
For his enemies in the lands way over there
Maybe Jesus would have flown the planes
That killed the kids in Viet Nam
Tell me, who would Jesus bomb

Yes I hear you shout with confidence
As you praise the lord
And you talk about this God you know so well
And you talk of Armageddon
And your final victory
When all the evil forces go to hell
Well you'd best hope you've chosen wisely
On the right side of the lord
And when you die your conscience it is clear
You'd best hope that your atom bombs
Are better than the sword
At the time when your reckoning is here

'Cause I don't think Jesus would send gunships into Bethlehem
Or jets to raze the towns of Timorese
I don't think Jesus would lend money to dictators
Or drive those SUV's
And I don't think Jesus would ever have dropped
A single ounce of napalm
So tell me, who would Jesus bomb?

For any Christian who has ever supported any war - ever - I propose this question to you.

is it somehow worse when a religious person wants to bomb somone/something, than it is when someone who isn't religious wants to bomb someone/something? sure, religion is supposed to be about love and understanding and whatnot..but, isn't that what most people, religious or not, want?

just a question, not getting into an argument here...

who's the guy who wrote that anyway? bless his heart for trying, but.. if you're looking for satire, then check out frank zappa...here are some quotes for ya: http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/zappa.htm

and to finish this little post, the lyrics to a very good song called Jesus thinks you're a jerk: http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/lyrics/Broadway_The_Hard_Way.html#Jesus

W-W-J-B? Whomever George Bush wants to, by proxy....

Of course, though Jesus may well have existed, as the son of a carpenter (like me), he would never have got anywhere near having that sort of power in his life.  But if Jesus is part of the holy trinity, then he's obviously up to no good...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1586978,00.html

One of the delegates, Nabil Shaath, who was Palestinian foreign minister at the time, said: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."

Mr Bush went on: "And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'. And, by God, I'm gonna do it."

Yes, because the religious person, unless in a strange hatred-driven religion (not Islam), supposedly lives by principles and values against violence, war, and murder.

yeah....meekus, that's what we all supposedly do isn't it? just because someone's not religious it doesn't mean that they do not have principles against violence and so forth... interesting question..

Not instigate anything further, but I never implied such.

What I was pointing out is that by basic principles (forget politics, excuses, revenge, etc.), the majority of religions are peaceful. If a leader calls himself a "compassionate conservative" and then bombs the hell out of foreign countries, it seems backwards. Not even in a complicated way, very basic.

Christ is in the name, is it not?

you didn't? well, that's kinda what you did, but nevermind, let's not even go there...

that's exactly my point! all humans try to live by those "basic principles" right? we all want peace and harmony... so when a leader who is religious, bombs some other country...why should we be more outraged, or confused or some other fitting word, than we would have been had the leader been non-religous? it's always "backwards" to bomb isn't it?

anyway, that's the way I chose to look at it...

Your idea makes sense. But because America has never seen a non-Christian president, and doubtfully will for some time, there's no way to know of the reaction.

Of course I'll always be outraged of wars. But it seems unnecessarily backwards for him to go out of his way and declare himself conservative (STILL!) under the very non-Christian circumstances involved.

Having said that all very formally, Bush sucks wang.

well, do you really expect Bush to make sense? he's not the sharpest tool in the box is he..However, if I was christian I'd be very offended by him calling himself christian..
