Stage fantasy

With all the line up changes in the new Rats it got me thinking if any of us here on the forum have ever fantasized about getting up on the stage and singing a song or two, backed by Simon and Gary and the rest of them.

Does anyone think they could hack it on stage and bring their Bob Geldof fantasies to life? Just for one or two numbers?

Which songs would you like to sing? At least most of us know the words so there's no great problem on that score and we wouldn't have to learn the songs from scratch and we would get the tone correct from years of listening!

Noel,

Glad you're back; can't remember when you've been off air for as long. Been away?

I reckon you'll be lucky to find anyone admitting to the fantasy, but suspect there's a fair few that should. Confess I've never imagined fronting the band, but did more than once picture myself and a few mates being a band on the stage at our old school. Usually did this when sitting there with headphones on to favourite songs (sometimes Rats/sometimes others), and can even remember who played what and their stage positions. no

Haven't done this for years....honest!

I was in self imposed exile for a few weeks, basically to get a rest as I find that too much analysis of the Rats and pouring over every little detail can be a bit or a drain on the more spontaneous enjoyment of the Rats music when its not 'done to death' by way of analysis.

I did manage to last 15 days without posting a few months ago and this time 'round it was 11 days- a little space and distance can be a good thing- it's not as if I or any other 'fanatic' is gonna have changed  his or her mind and dropped their love of the band.

Which music fan has never dreamed of going on stage and singing? I don't think there are many. My query was more of a 'quck turn on stage after a few drinks' type fantasy rather than having serious ambitions or delusions about taking over full time.

Maybe for Whyteleaf they should have got you up on stage to sing She's So Modern as a treat?

Would have been memorable...for all the wrong reasons smile.

Was a time when I had my Geldof actions and mannerisms off to a tee in front of the mirror (i.e. mainly doing what he did at points on TOTP or in videos such as rubbing fingers and thumbs when getting himself a little easy money, or huddling into imaginary coat when buttoning against the cold). Problem is the amount of drinks it would take to get me doing that onstage would render any action/singing/speaking impossible.

Perhaps I should fantasise about fronting the Pogues instead wink.

There must be a top ten 'bingo call' of Geldof mannerisms or practices including the nearly obligatory telling off of some unfortunate in the crowd for not being cool or whatever. Or telling the lighting tech to point his lights at someone.

In a couple of weeks time, after the Rats German gig, there'll be nothing to talk about at all for a few months.

Well there you go ... actually it's only 34 more days until Christmas Day.  My 12 year old is very helpfully giving me his own daily countdown - who needs an advent calendar!  So I could update everyone every day if you're all really bored and have nothing to talk about!

On the other hand, judging by the post title you might get all sorts of interesting subjects discussed .....

You're lucky, my 12-year old has been counting down since June.

All I want for Christmas is House on Fire on 7" in mint condition.

Funnily enough, I've had the countdown since mid-June - day after 12 year old's birthday, ie next opportunity for more presents!
Better write your Xmas list out clearly otherwise you might get box of After Eights and have need of a fire extinguisher ....

Well Argeee as Alice had to tell herself when challenged with slaying the dragon one must think of 3 things that have happend that are/were impossible to enable her to believe that she could possibly slay the dragon.

so come on argeee, 3 impossible things that have happend, i can think of some:

1. internet revolution in just several years the fact that we have these things called laptops now, 1,000 years ago it would be deemed impossible.

2. that we have these things called satellites floating about in out of space.

3. that i am actually a medium and a psychic, FACT. whatever that means in that it might not be dead people talking to me but there is INDEED another dimension out there that one can connect to and here and see all sorts of weird stuff that can be verified as FACT by person having the reading.

SO ARGEEE maybe one day, in that case, i will sing with bob geldof.

shame old jimmy saville aint around anymore though innit.

ah well maybe Bob will FIX IT as in Bob the Builder.

Arguably you did if you sang along at the Cadogan Hall gig.

However I shall never score the winning goal in the European Cup final.

I thought it was George who slayed the dragon, not Alice. Or more correctly George slew the dragon.

There are certainly other dimensions about, as anyone who has tried psychedelics can testify.

Returning to the real world, momentarily at least, I was trying to deflect the embarrassment of admitting to having such fantasies. Was meant to be tongue firmly in cheek, so apologies if umbrage was taken. Feel free to edit.

Anyway, seems I needn't have worried as clearly everyone on here seems to have had some sort of fantasy along lines mentioned. Fair play to all those not embarrassed to admit.

Whereas I am bound to have them... no

Anyway, not a fantasy for me, I have been in the Rats, albeit on a poster for a seaside festival.

You must mean the film Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp. I like fantasy films and have yet to catch up on that one- I did see an old cartoon version of AIW, made as a movie possibly by Disney, dating from the sixties I think.

I saw the Johnny Depp version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Blu Ray and while it looked visually very good, found the film a bit dull.

Have you seen the Luc Bresson film Joan of Arc, in French language.

I had 2 dreams.

1. Rats - like Arrgee I was shown as a band member on a gig poster, I also take gig bookings etc. etc. for them. I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing the Rats play live. My outstanding ambition is to write a song for the Rats to record. I think that I now have some songs that are good enough, but I need to find a guitarist to help me record some rough demos.

2. To play for the football team I support - I did some scouting for them and designed their football kit. I got to see a player I recommended score whilst wearing the kit I designed.

I guess it's as close as I'll ever be...

I did play at Highbury for an Arsenal team* just before it got demolished.    Walked through the Marble Halls, got changed in the dressing room, walked out the tunnel, had a shot just go over the bar and made a goal line clearance.  I tend to gloss over the moment I fell over over running back towards goal only to see the opposition take advantage of my John Terry-esque slip.  Even got presented with a medal by Charlie George , my hero, at the end. It was one of the greatest days in my life.

*sadly a veterans team no

This guy does a pretty good job on some of the Rats back catalogue- only problem is he's Japanese, as his profile says. BTR you're probably looking for someone more local!

The bit about designing the team kit sounds like good material for the Danny Baker show on BBC 5 live Saturdays 9-11 am.

It's like one of those scenes from Dickens when the young kid says 'I think this is going to be the best Christmas ever'.

Nice jesture. I am presuming it was signed by Bob and Pete fairly recently rather than being an old signed mint condition record from back in the day?

Very fresh ink! Santa was planning to get Garrick and Simon to sign it as well, but he had to get back to the North Pole.

Sure is, I played it last night and bar a little background crackle, the record was superb.  The single mixes are generally tighter and superior.  Santa suss certainly delivers the goodies.  I'll have to give him the mince pie and glass of milk next time I see him.

That crackle was deliberate for the 7" version, to give the authentic House on Fire sound effect biggrin.

Ok, maybe not.....

Can't believe you only rate the b side of House On Fire, Europe Looked Ugly as 2/10. Most people of this forum really like the song, considering it one of the Rats finest, and might ask why it wasn't included on V Deep?

The song is also lyrically brilliant, Geldof at his cynical best so I'm not sure what the problem is when most fans really rate this song, including me. I think it has all  the hallmarks of a Rats classic, but it is interesting how we all view songs differently.

It'd be nice to think that smile.   A bit of crackle is inevitable on older records.

I guess I could sort it out if I spend £500 on one of these...

I had another listen to be sure I wasn't mistaken.  And I still don't care for it too much.   No problem with it per se, just a song I'm not too concerned about.  I don't have a dislike of it like Another Piece of Red or Charmed Lives, just indifferent to it.

The Rats put out some stunning b sides, Real Different, Late Last Night, It's all the Rage etc, and Europe Looked Ugly is nearly up there with them for me. As Arrgee says, it's not Charmed Lives, but it's certainly worth around 7 out of 10 - have not played it for years - perhaps I should give it a hearing.

The great B-side of indifference? Not at all, I'd give that award to Precious Time!
