(there's a lot more, but to cap it off)

The words tumble and catch, the tunes grip, the band plays and being Irish in the 21st Century makes a sense denied me in those long years past in Ireland itself. This is the noise of a connected Ireland, not an insular frightened ghetto of the head by a people inside or outside who define themselves within a world that is not a small island off the western shores of Europe. It is everywhere and everybody is welcome to come in. It’s the Ireland I imagines and was desperate for a long time ago now. It is the noise of the always outside who have no desire to come in save on their terms. It’s cultural revolution stuff. A great reclaiming from those who made it by those whom it was made for. Great words. Great music. Great band. Great art.

Bob Geldof, August 2004

I connect the Pogues with my friend Corinna from Hamburg. We saw the Pogues in Hamburg in November 1989. Looking back, we see this concert as the first of many to come we would go to together. The German band Fury in the Slaughterhouse was the support band on that night. Their guitarist Christof reminded us of Bob (but only from way back in the last row, where we stood on some tables...) Funnily, Christof has turned out to be a big fan of Bob - coincidence or not?

Don't miss this if you have digital TV!  A great story of how this wonderful song was made.

The Story of... Fairytale of New York
Tue 20 Dec at 01:55 on BBC Three
Thu 22 Dec at 23:30 on BBC Three
Fri 23 Dec at 02:25 on BBC Three

For the first time in 18 years, all eight members of The Pogues return to the studio where their biggest hit - and one of the nation's favourite Christmas songs - was recorded. Also, the song's producer Steve Lillywhite strips the tune down to the basics, and video director Peter Dougherty reveals the tricks behind the making of the video - including how a cameo from Hollywood star Matt Dillon stopped The Pogues from almost being arrested.

With contributions from Matt Dillon, Nick Cave, Jools Holland and of course Shane MacGowan and The Pogues, The Story of Fairytale of New York lifts the lid on this seminal track and reveals the secrets behind its making. Very strong language. [S]
