Assume you've ruled out the closest to description one ('mass' produced as opposed to one off) on eBay? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Boomtown-Rats-T-shirt-Tonic-Music-Tee-/330512460468?pt=UK_Men_s_T_Shirts&var=&hash=item7dbc24fea7#ht_1461wt_952

Item image

If so, I've got a mate who has a t-shirt printing business, well certainly did as late as November, so I can sound him out (for discounts too). Want to create an image/wording for him to quote and maybe supply a sample?

No idea about copyright, though I suspect Geldof/Rats see little if any reward from the above or other ebay offerings. That said, someone must hold image rights.

I'm up for it though. Surely any publicity / memory jogging must lead to record sales at worst, so would hope the owners and/or subjects would turn a blind eye to a small venture as described.

Put it this way, I don't think HMV buyers will be knocking your door down smile

... a semi serious one, but I'm on the look out for a really cool Rats T-shirt.  What I would like is a white shirt with the trademark Tonic for the Troops paint dripping, and THE BOOMTOWN RATS subtley embroided in yellow.

Now I guess getting something customised like this will cost a few bob, but some questions.

i) Does anyone reading this forum make T-shirts?

ii) What would be the cost of say about 20?

iii) Would anyone be interested apart from me?

iv) Do you think Geldof will sue me?

I think it would be cool to have a forum shirt, but of course you may all disagree!

Yep, discounted that as I don't want a picture of the band, as it will inevitably fade and look crap.

I want something that is just a logo , but with the dripping paint coming from the shoulders. Maybe something like these, if you can imagine it...

blow_up_image_54-300x300.jpgshirt_40-300x300.png

I see on http://www.sunburstapparel.com they have a minimum order of 300.  Which is probably about 280 too many for me!

Forget HMV, I want to sell it through SuperDry or one of those trendy stores kids go to these days smile

I've always though the cover on the debut album of Geldof stretching out is totally iconic, and would make a great t shirt. Of course with the Boomtown Rats lettering to make sure people know exactly what it is.The dark, subdued colour doesn't make it too gaudy, but as usual it's all down to ones personal taste.

Or perhaps this......

Would be good to get a Rats t-shirt designed for females - ie not for 6 foot guys that look baggy and shapeless if you're only just over 5 foot, but nor for really skinny guys that don't fit in all the right places!!

And v-necked would be good too, more flattering than round-necked ones, ooh yes and maybe the logo could be in fluorescent pink or similar ...I'd be willing to pay about a tenner!

No? Well, ok, can forego the pink perhaps (I guess I could accessorize), but really would prefer v-neck And would still like it to be less than a tenner - £9.99?

Lisa,

Reckon you'd get change from your £10 if you go to Primark and B&Q.....

I like the first photo, but the second one is a little dubious ......

Not too sure about a white t-shirt on second thoughts, usually go for black so the red wine stains don't show! Also might prefer a long-sleeved one. Anyway glad you guys have got in touch with your feminine side - it's been great discussing fashion for a change What next - make-up tips??

Paint is expensive.  It'd be more like £40 for three pots of paint and some brushes.

I have to confess I really don't like photographs or images on T shirts as they fade and crack.

This is the ultimate T shirt...

Looks good, if a little USA baseball circa mid seventies style t-shirt with the coloured sleeves. I was picturing something that carried the blue colour a little further down from the yoke, perhaps to the sternum area, with the drips heading for the navel (turning into some sort of Gok Wan here!). Guess I had something akin to top half of forum page/rear of cover in mind, but with the yellow actually on blue (like the front of album cover) to make it stand out more.

On that point, do you by any chance have the image in forum page background. Matey boy is still in t-shirt business and happy to discuss, but would be good to give him an image to transpose / work from, ideally with the running paint as per original I guess.

Having said all that, your idea so only right you should have casting vote on design.

Couple of queries before I ring him. Are you particular about name being embroidered on rather than straight printed? Would guess that'll hike cost considerably. Secondly, would you want plain white back or same blue/red spread across rear of sleeves/shoulder blades. Also, any other wording at all. Forum URL printed across bottom of rear maybe?? My old Sunday league side had Silk Cut as its sponsor and I always felt the 'Smoking Kills' print on rear of (purple/white quarters) shirt at bottom was a touch of class, although the white socks with light brown 'filter tip' rollover at top was the piece de resistance...but I digress.

Finally, what would minimum order realistically be? I'd be happy to take to gigs and sell your stock (at risk of a burger van wars scenario with Mark W maybe smile ) but I guess quote for manufacture will hinge on numbers to some extent.

RSVP and I'll ring him if you're still keen. I am. And I'm sure Lisa will be (if we can encourage her to forego her usual bottle of red per night for a couple of days in order to fund purchase).

p.s. Those yellow and red/white shirts on previous post are indeed striking, and beautiful in their simplicity. Shame about those little stains on the chest area though biggrin

The Lookin' After No 1 black t-shirts that got mentioned on Geldof thread (might be an idea to merge those entries into this thread...mods?) are available in female styling/cut.

Just select style/size at following - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/boomtown-rats-t-shirt-retro-/180819131529?pt=UK_Men_s_T_Shirts&var=&hash=item6fc62e4ae3#ht_959wt_905

Won't show red wine stains either.

I quite like those ones, so yes that's helpful for those of us who are vertically challenged and would just put a belt around the middle and wear it as a dress!

If we were having forum merchandise it would be nice to be able to buy one of those too though.  Discrimination against us shorties wink

Not sure I could carry that off - usually try to avoid attention being drawn to my middle hmm  Maybe I could just take it slightly down a more punk route and get a black dustbin sack emblazoned with a Rats logo - might work out cheaper too!  Then I don't have to give up the wine biggrin

The paint can definitely be further down, so the yellow can be on the blue.  Embroidered as it will last, and nothing else printed on it at all.  If anything remove the logo altogether as those in the know will know it's a Rats shirt anyway. Minimum order is the thing.  I'd have no problem selling twenty or so.  If they could be sold at gigs, then maybe 100.  But I guess I could list on eBay and maybe sell about 200.  Of course if I sold none, I'd have a load of Christmas presents.

Although I think the red and blue is ideal, looking at the best of a simple red or blue was used, which looks OK.

http://www.covershut.com/Music-Covers/58128-The-Boomtown-Rats-The-Best-Of-2005-Disc.html

I do have the image of the logo and the background, right click to get URLs...

Just out of curiosity I checked up on who designed the cover for Tonic For The Troops. The guy responsible was called Chuck Loyota and he also designed the cover for The Fine Art of Surfacing, credited with Lorne Miller.

The Tonic photo session was by Fin Costello, but I suppose Chuck was the guy with the shaky hands and cans of paint.

Chuck Loyota also designed covers for 'artists' as diverse as The Lurkers and Dire Straight, but it is hard to get much information about him on the Internet. It seems Chuck was a very private person who retreated to East Anglia and disappeared from the design scene.

This article tells a short, but interesting story, and Chuck Loyota deserves some recognition for his artwork with the Rats.

Update from my t-shirt contact reads 'get the idea but there are a number of technical issues', which I imagine is the fashion industry equivalent of a plumber sucking air between clenched teeth before informing client 'it ain't gonna be cheap' (must ask Garry to demo that one day).

I currently await his 'ideas of what could be achieved', after a weekend of designer creative thinking no doubt darlings.

Gives us all time to keep saving up I suppose.

Will post more when Steve 'Versace' gets back to me...

ArrGee, let me know if you want direct contact so you can specify/decide, and cut out the useless middleman.

Absolutely beautiful. I just discovered this because I googled "that's not funny i'm not laughing." Now, I must ask, as the groove winds toward the center, wha' d' I gotta do for a cool top?
Bring ya' to New Orleans for a bender?...i bought, for next to nothing, my first Boomtown Rats LP in the 1970s in a little record shop in Kansas, about 30 kms from Kansas City. It was a promo. It was The Fine Art of Surfacing. Next one, I ordered at the same time I bought the first, and it was delivered the next day. It was Tonic for the Troops. I know, Tonic predates Surfacing, but, hey, I live in the U.S. and it was unusual I got one of the first copies of the LP. I have been a fan since. My ex-wife destroyed my LPs in the late 1980s. That's one of the main reasons she's my ex-wife. T-shirt! I want one! I love the ideas. I think the logo on the shirt should be a bit more than a designer stamp. Tonic for the Troops should not be centered nor elongated, but spread across the sternum, chest, and upper abdomen, like a badge of honor swirling.

The original post was speculative as I wanted some idea of the cost.  Wasn't expecting it to be cheap, as the quantities were going to be low, just wanted to know if a small batch was feasible.  Not looking to profit, and would probably make a loss.

Quite happy for you to be the middleman, I have a project of my own right now that is taking up a lot of time.  I have deferred the spectre of employment for another month, which gives me a bit of time to work on some ideas, though I must confess Cowboy Trap is a very unwelcome distraction.  Really not sure about knocking down the wall between the dining room and the kitchen anymore.

ArrGee,

I'm told it won't be possible for guy I know to create design across the shoulders/sleeves as per mock up, but he's drafted a few alternatives on the theme, mainly with more manageable chest images on plain white t.

Do you want to review and continue contact, or are you only looking to recreate as per your design/vision?

Cheers.

Suss

Err, maybe this...

I mainly refer to a certain individual who I shall not name in this email but I am sure the knob knows who he is. To say/email the things he has to Tina and Ian, he deserves to be hung and I will make sure he has no further activity on the site at all. At the moment both Tina and Ian do not really want to carry on with it (for this I really thank the knob head, you know who you are)

Considering I only spoke to you for the first time last year and all I ever emailed were reviews you asked for, I'd love to read those emails I supposedly wrote that would mean I deserve to be hung.

cowardly - yep

lying - yep

slandering - yep

charmless - yep

Water under the bridge?  When he makes a grovelling apology and admits he was totally out of order.

You can't be absolutely 100% certain. Anyway, what's happening with the forum merchandising idea? Too expensive? Not practical?

I was pleased that there was a ladies size on the official website merchandise and then equally disappointed to find they had sold out completely and just sold the the last one. However, Willo did say he's getting some more. Fantastic new!

Arrgee this is Tina here. Can you send me my login details as I have lost them. Also Ian has always been quite respectful of your knowledge and has always told everyone this end that you know what you are talking about re BTR. And many times your comments are taken to much to heart by some people our end, and Ian has often said that actually what you were saying was quite justified. From my side, I think you know that I have no real opinion on the past as I am not a huge rats fan, only the big chart hits like everyone else. I gained my knowledge of their history from ian and of course and of course Bob. For the record I am a fan of Geldof and the band as I have been about for a very long time in that. I can assure that Willo s a nice guy and maybe the comment that caused all the problems was taken out of context, but I can only say I forward things I am asked to. So for the sake of harmony, we have good times coming up with the radio station and various other things so lets try to move forward eh? Ian says if we offended you, it wasn't meant. And possibly these things were said in the heat of the moment, this is Ian's personal view.

No, he isn't. The context is very clear.

No. Only when I get a full grovelling apology.

Ian says if we offended you, it wasn't meant.

Yes, it was.

Just trying to come up with a decent design to be honest.  I would like something with the tonic lettering and some splash of colour, but nothing too elaborate.  Found a supplier who can do small runs cheap in numerous styles/colours.  When I have a design, you can decide if you like it.

I acquired a pretty decent Best Of cover T Shirt a couple of weeks back, which is basically the image below without the words 'the best of' on a plain white tee. Will still get one of yours if you get a supplier though.

Not me making them - it's some mob in Leicestershire. All sizes by looks of it, but cut for men. They also do one with the IDLM single cover on the front.

A very kind 't-shirt fairy' (well maybe not a fairy) ensured I had one of these t-shirts. I found out who you are. Big big thanks. What a lovely thoughtful thing to do.

Great design work and it looks really good, but I'd suggest the use of original band photos isn't ideal. Maybe without the photo images, or with current band?

I tried it without the pictures and it looked a bit dull with just the red logo.  I did think of putting red Xs on non-members but that seemed a bit aggressive.  I haven't got any decent images of new Bob nor Darren, just some low quality gifs/jpegs.  One thing I did consider was some sort of typographic map for the shape.  I'll see what I can do...

I think that is a really good design ArrGee. Reminds people of the songs( yes there were so many good ones) and nice colour on the lettering. Not sure if the songs were generated by a computer programme but including Rain and Whitehall 1212, Under Their Thumb and House Burned Down  seems a bit optomistic. Surely there are better, more well known songs that would have made the list. I know it's only a prototype but well done anyway. Nice artwork.

Songlist can be tailored, and certain songs emphasised more than others.  I'll do another.  Soon!

Much better. Someones been working on those song titles. The only real potential problem is the dark blue lettering showing up on a black t shirt. Maybe its better to make sure the lettering is in bright colours to make certain all the song titles are legible. The darkish ones are harder to read, but not impossible.

Even on professional album covers I've sometimes seen this sort of problem, lack of 'colour testing' so that what should be readable becomes illegible. Still I think it's very good- gets the Rats 'message' across. Might be fun to read after a few drinks or a jazz cigarette.

Like all these. Prefer black shirts for one, and designs are a bit different from run of the mill efforts available. If you're serious about knocking a few out I'd definitely buy, but recommend anything alluding to current gigs loses 'The' before Boomtown Rats. Don't think they're alowed to use the full name.

Also, minor thing but I think I'd prefer any London, Blackheath Halls, 17th Nov type writing to be centralised e.g

    Blackheath Halls

         London

17th November 2012

I'll just send the .png files and you can get your own printed.  You can centralise the text yourself

As for the "The", these aren't official so they can be whatever we want them to be!

Maybe it's relaxed a bit. Only going by instructions I had about tickets and DVD for the Whyteleafe gig a couple of years back.

'The' Boomtown Rats' is almost inevitable.

OK, as I don't quite have the word map version ready, basically any of these shown below (mix and match front and back) cost about £10 each for standard male sizes (S/M/L/XL/XXL).  Without backprint they are £7.50.

Delivery is about 28 days but can be quicker for a price.

Ladies cuts/sizes are also available.

If you want them delivered directly, I can send you the .png files and you can go to http://www.vistaprint.co.uk and get them there.  I'm happy to get some for delivery in Blackheath and Dublin, and can even post them out, but I can't guarantee delivery by a particular date.

Advance orders only, as I'm not standing outside venues selling these!

Sent a PM as well, but I'm still not comfortable with old band pics on front and new band Dublin gig on back.

If the simple name logo was front on both, with gig variations only on back (they both look good) then I'm in for a pair. Cheers.

Are you bringing a few to Dublin if ordered? If so bring an XL and £10 is yours (with band pic on frontand map on back). Great effort. Watching this page for months and is was going nowhere. Well done.

Sorry, won't be able to get them printed quickly enough.    I'll be wearing a large myself, but as I won't have any other clothes, I'm hanging onto it.  See you there.

Good luck getting past Irish Customs wearing only a large Rats t-shirtsmile.gif. Have you not seen any of those tv programmes about Customs?

Never had an issue with Irish customs, they just wave me by with my driving licence.  It's Ryanair checking your bags that's the bigger issue.  Have to make out it weighs nothing, even if it has a laptop and hefty manuals in it.
