A very good in-depth interview and great to hear so many clips of their songs played in it too. A much longer interview than I expected - am now in trouble for neglecting the chores!! But well worth a listen - and Garry has such a sexy voice too
So where is the interview with Simon? You'll have to share that one too ....
Excellent interview with Garry. Judging by their performance at Porth recently they certainly give their all and I for one was not disappointed. Just maybe wished I had drunk a bit less to take in the enormity of actually seeing Roberts and Crowe on stage.
Must have been tough for Garry and Simon to go from being pop stars to basically turning their backs on the music industry and almost forgetting what great music the Rats made. Both Pete Barton and Bob Bradbury have done pretty good jobs on vocals, in a sense proving the songs are well capable of being sung by others, notwithstanding the legendary Bob Geldof.
Garry doesn't seem to hold any grudges against Geldof now, and talks fairly openly about him in the few mentions he gets. It'll be interesting comparing the Bob and Pete show in Vicar Street, Dublin on May 19th with the current version of the Rats. Certainly Roberts and Crowe are not letting their side down and if Geldof and Briquette are on similar form I can't complain. I can only wish they were all on the same stage.
After the band broke up in 1986 Gary basically said that he did not listen to the Rats until 2008, but he probably played lots of the songs hundreds of times live during their glory years, so they were pretty embedded at least in the back of his mind.
I Can Make It was one of the songs they 'dropped' from the live set around '77/'78 so that was one Gary had not heard in nearly 35 years. Wonder is Gary's memory of their own songs better than Simons? My new theory is that because Simon allegedly isn't too keen on Diamond Smiles that's why he couldn't remember its b- side Late Last Night, but then I always thought the Sex Pistols were overrated!Wonder which of all the Rats is the most knowledgeable about their career? In some kind of Mastermind with The Boomtown Rats as the chosen subject which one would come out on top?
That is quite scary, ArrGee! But I applaud your good taste in men
Many many years ago before I actually met any of the band, I had a dream that I was backstage with the Rats and found myself hanging out with Garry ahead of the others. A bit strange as at the time he was probably the one I thought was not that essential to the band.
Anyway, when I met him at the 100 Club and then heard how much his guitar did matter, especially on the first album, it almost explained my dream. Only thing was I ended up chatting with Simon for ages after the gig!
That said, I don't have any sexual feelings towards Garry despite his sexy voice
It's a shame Suss wasn't doing that interview instead of Garry, as it appears he seems to know better than Mr Roberts what it was he was trying to say. Maybe Suss does not appreciate that the word "onanism" carries a thread of meaning relating to self-abuse which is not carried by the word "narcissism" and it was for this reason that the word was used, advisedly. I think it is not Mr Roberts who could do with a new dictionary.
