I'm going to both these gigs and am wondering if anyone is up for a meet up beforehand. Also does anyone know of any pubs near the venues - which serve real ale.
One that is right by Angel tube station, is the York - very traditional pub, lots of good ales and cheap filling food, but at least 15 mins walk on to the venue.
Closer to the Assembly halls (on the way from the tube) is the Camden Head - slightly nicer traditional pub with good real ale selection. About 10 mins walk on to the venue

Not sure exactly what we are doing yet - hoping to arrive in W'loo just after 5.00, then we are planning to have a meal at an Indian veggie place in Islington area, hopefully have time for a drink before/after/during
I don't know about Harrogate, but if you want a slice of Rock n Roll history, go to Highbury & Islington rather than Angel (it is a lot nearer the venue) and walk down Upper Street to the Hope & Anchor. Even featured in a Madness video
Must be the hot weather but I've just booked hotel and tickets for Geldof at the Islington Assembly Hall next Friday.
Hope to meet Jules, Lisa, Suss and something tells me ArrGee might make a surprise appearance, who knows? Not sure if Scottie is going to this one but it would be nice to meet up and say hello. Hope to meet Derek The Dane too as I think he's going.
Got an hotel on Anson Rd N7 which is near the Emarites Stadium and the general Islington area and due to arrive in London sometime in the afternoon (3-4) so hopefully will go along for a drink somewhere before the gig. Will be in the standing area for the gig itself.
Shouldn't have missed Geldof in Dublin but had a change of heart.

The Old Bell Tavern looks nice, decent ales, food etc. We'll be there around 6 pm. PM me if you plan to meet up in case of any problems etc.
Come back to you about Islington - we need to work out what time we should get the venue for that as it's all standing isn't it or get there early for front row!!! Will get to pub quite early for food for that.
It's not me that drinks real ale, it's Howard. I drink water lol t-total.

Hope and Anchor sounds good/interesting but not sure we'll go there this time, planning to have a visit to a veggie curry restaurant before gig and will maybe go to Camden Head at some point - has outside seating so may be easier with teenage son in tow .......
Anyway, a reliable source (!) informs me:
"Hope and Anchor - Loud music, quite a good atmosphere, but not the place to go for a chat. No real ale when I visited, just keg rubbish. They did have Green King and Old Speckled Hen, but both had run out.
I recommend the Camden Head (outside seating area) for anyone travelling to Angel tube station (and looking for a cheap curry*), but yes, there are closer pubs to the venue if travelling to Highbury and Islington."
Good news, Noel! There should be quite a gathering, hope to meet up with you and others somewhere. Also in the standing area though son not best pleased, so if you see someone moaning that will be our group! Might be me too if suffering with the heat and sore feet! But hopefully spirits will lift with the music judging by the rave reviews so far Anyway looking forward to it!
... and something tells me ArrGee might make a surprise appearance, who knows?
Highly unlikely unless my associate at the town hall manages to bunk me in. All things are possible, but I've seen Geldof not so long ago and not so worried about seeing him again. Also, I'm off to Field Day the next day before heading off to the sticks to avoid the Jubilee street party, so my weekend is pretty full.
I'm planning on leaving work so I can be in vicinity around 5pm. Anyone ever make a decision on which pub? I'm happy with either (would take H&A if pushed) as I'll only have a lemonade or two.
As for getting there early to be at front; as my son might say....Really??

First of all, what time would people suggest meeting for Islington - given that it is stand up only and we need to get to the gig ridiculously early to get at the front.
The Hope and Anchor seems as good a place as any.A couple of minutes from the venue, on Upper St, so no getting lost on the way if too much booze consumed beforehand. Has a musical pedigree and maybe others not on this forum have the same idea about it for a pre gig drink?
I am due to check into my hotel around 4pm and will get tube to Highbury/Islington so should be in Islington around 5pm or thereabouts. Am open to going anywhere but it would be nice if something definite was planned and a few of us turned up!
I will await further suggestions.

I like to get to a gig in plenty of time and certainly in the old days there was usually some good support bands, mainly on the indie scene but I doubt Geldof's support band is the next big thing.
Now it's dawned on me is the Assembly Hall licenced to sell alcohol? It would be nice to settle in early and have a pint or two and watch the build up. All those mysterious stage technicians or whatever they are called have always fascinated me!
Update: Seems the do sell alcohol as when Bad Manners played there in February there are copious mentions of drunken fans enjoying the Manners Special Brew and the bars being busy.

Might be best if you guys just meet up wherever you'd prefer. As I said probably not getting to W'loo until 5.00 (depending on whether youngest son manages to walk to railway station and bypass the sweet shop in time to get the train, dropping him off at grandparents on way), then our plan is to head for Angel, maybe stopping for drink at Camden Head (if weather is nice for sitting outside) or maybe heading straight for curry. Shouldn't be long eating as it's a buffet so no need to wait for service. Then depending on time, grab another drink somewhere. Is H&A really near venue? If so, might be able to pop in for a quick one! Must admit I'm really not sure of start time of gig off hand, is there a support?? Not sure I'll be at the front - and would maybe rather relax with a drink somewhere than stand up an extra hour to get a place But am sure we will bump into others somewhere along the way ....
Ok, think I'll go for Hope and Anchor on basis it's nearer and has some history. It's only about 300 yards from Highbury and Islington tube (also easier for me) - just head south (or right out of tube) down Upper St. Venue is (I think) about another 100 yards further south. ArrGee??
Lisa, there's also the Nag's Head en route from Angel if you're looking for suggestions.
Does anyone know what time Bob is due on stage at? I'm guessing around 9.30 ish. Hopefully it will be over before the last tubes to avoid taxi fare. Hope to get full value out of a one day travelcard!
OK so 5 pm in H&A, it is, sounds good to me. We'll be going for something to eat before then, probably at another pub or somewhere. So if anyone wants to meet earlier, PM me your mobile and we can catch up in the afternoon.
The doors open at 7 or 7.30 pm, and there will be a support band, I assume, so we need to suffer it, whatever it is, those of us want to get to the front. We can find out what time Bob is due on, for anyone who wants to hang around in the pub and wait in there.
Let's meet in the H&A as I've said this to FB people too and we could move on to the Assembly Hall after about 45 mins??? Then we are there to get to the front??? I want to catch up with everyone but also get a good slot at the front and not stuck behind someone of 6 ft as I usually do when I'm further back. Find the tallest person at the gig and they'll suddenly appear and stand in front of me and as I move so do they.
there's always a good pair of platform boots or even a pogo stick solution.
Doubt there will be a crush to get to the front of the stage. Not too long ago Bob couldn't even get a gig in London or anywhere in the UK.Hopefully with Facebook and Twitter there will be a good turn out. I suppose this forum is rather old fashioned as things go and not many people use it. That's a debating point in itself, which is the best way for fans to promote Geldof and Boomtown Rats.
Noel, i don't think you'll have any problems with the tube. They run up to midnight most of the time. Can't see Bob being on as late as 9.30pm. Maybe 8.45pm with a finish time of 10.30-10.45pm i reckon.
Thanks Jules - glad someone is organised Now it's so much easier to make plans - Suss can work out just how many beers he can fit in (oops sorry lemonade!) before gig ..
So let's say then, open invitation for all Geldof and Rats fans going to the gig to meet at the Hope and Anchor 207 Upper St Islington N1 between 5pm and 7.30pm on Friday I June? Everybody welcome.

I just checked the last tubes and they seem to be well after midnight. Of course the Jam couldn't have written that song if the last tube was at 11pm.
