...activism has completely damaged my ability to do the thing I love. If it hadnt happened I think I would have been able to make the transition from the Boomtown Rats to a solo thing more like Weller or Sting.
I reckon they both make more than two albums in twenty years. Still he is admitting he ain't as good as he was with the Rats. Damaged, indeed. On the whole, another dull interview where Geldof is adamant he will only talk about music and then doesn't talk about it at all. When they interviewed Weller, he tended to focus on the music and give the X factor and The Voice the slagging they deserved. As for the Queen, it's as if punk rock never happened.
I tend to like his music, patchy and all as it's been much more than the increasingly opinionated activist/businessman side of him. It's a lot easier to relate to songs than some of his more madcap ideas and views and his songs tend to deal in the personal.
There was a time when any Geldof pronouncement on any subject would have got my attention. Nowadays I just don't care than much. Can we just like the art, or do we need to like the real person behind that art as well?Confused, Dublin.

Definitely. Geldof's last couple of albums have their moments, but I think it is nonsense for him to to say his activism prevented him from a great solo career. If anything, his activism gave him a shot at a solo career. I doubt he would have got a solo record deal without it.
There are a multitude of reasons for Geldof not having much respect regarding his solo musical career. Some unfair (i.e. the general dislike of Bob & Paula from the press), some fair (i.e. the poor/mediocre songs) and some self-inflicted (i.e. the cancelled gigs) , but the activism is just an excuse. Crikey, look at Bono, he is activism personified and it hasn't done his career any harm.
