Are there any Ian Rankin fans out there? You may be interested to know that Ian has written a short story for a special needs childrens charity, featuring detective Inspector Rebus, who has to police the make Poverty History march and the Live 8 Murrayfield concert in Edinburgh. Yes, Bob Geldof does get a mention, although the two characters never meet. There is one copy left of a limited edition of 1000 and you can bid for it on Ian Rankin's web site. His next full Rebus novel to be published in 2006, is set against the backdrop of Gleneagles G8. Maybe Bob will get another mention. Ian is a self proclaimed rock fan and does a lot of writing for charity. Maybe Bob and he should get together!
Ian Rankin is a very personable, ordinary down to earth guy, happy to stop and talk to anybody. He goes to a coffee shop every morning to do the Times crossword and passes Alexander McCall Smith(author of No1 ladies Detective series, set in Botswana and containing wonderful descriptions of Africa), who sits at his window working and then passes the end of JK Rowling's street. There is a nice golden literary triangle in that part of Edinburgh. If your dad ever gets a chance to hear him speak, he is very funny.
If Bob ever does meet Ian Rankin, he will have to apologise to him for noisily interrupting his talk at Hay on Wye by flying low overhead in a helicopter! Don't think Ian was too chuffed about that.
Just a quirky thought! As you may or may not know, the Rebus novels are being televised for ITV at the moment, with Ken Stott playing Rebus. If the new one, set at Gleneagles, is adapted for TV, Bob and Bono could play themselves. Bound to win a Rose D'Or !
