Dear Mods,

Sticking this query on other stuff but relates to Rats and/or BG.

Would it be possible to consider a gallery where forum users could load pics for posterity/comment? I'm thinking of things like pics with the band/BG (old or new), BG, photos from gigs, venues (would be great to see some long forgotten venues with hoarding showing Rats and so on), maybe even personal shots of us in t-shirts or poster festooned rooms (I've certainly got a couple like that and I'm past being embarrassed by haircuts etc).

Assume there's cost to consider for the space required but a) is it viable b) do others think it would be of interest?

Well as I'm the only mod posting these days, all I can say is go ahead.

I recommend a Picassa Public Gallery, but you are more than welcome to put links and thumbnails in a thread.  Just don't put massive bitmaps in as they screw up the performance and for those with limits on data usage (not me!) can burn up a lot of the allowance.

This is mine, but we could easily set up a forum one and give out the user/password.

oh here's one I uploaded recently...

Cheers. Should have made it clearer I was thinking of personal snaps but revised thread title spells it out. Thanks.

Will have a look at links when time permits but a link from forum sounds ideal.

Like that ticket...almost iconic biggrin. Looks like it was one of the last ones sold too.

Tickets is another thing to add to list if people have any they want to scan, helping build definitive picture of where and when gigs were, and what they cost. I know official website/blog has a large number of dates, but also know of some gigs that aren't on there. Even pics of tour adverts/t shirts can provide interesting quick ref info.

Will be a sort of time capsule if it takes off smile

Might even find yourself in someone else's photo from 30 years ago! That would be spooky....

Impressive! A number of items I'd never seen before there. Are they all possessions or are some borrowed images?

Particularly like the hoodie. Was/is that available merchandise?

Getting back to gallery, 'we could easily' might read better as 'I could easily' so would you be prepared to indulge us...well, me? I'm happy to find my way if not - just might take a little longer smile.

Would be good to see if interest is there as well before going to any trouble. I can look at my naff photos and memorabilia anytime - idea was to share the 'memories'.

Some are but many as just copied.  Some were off sites that no longer exist so just as well I copied them.

That was one of my designs for forum merchandise, forgot it was there.

Sure, the forum is my indulgence, so may as well indulge others smile

May be wrong here but not sensing a significant amount of interest so not sure setting up a whole public gallery thing for my benefit alone is worth the hassle.

Interested in seeing pictures - but none to share, unless I pose in my Looking After No. 1 t-shirt, only think I need to diet a bit first so that it doesn't look so tight ... or happy for someone to take a photo of me if I get a chance to meet the band again in Bournemouth

Think lack of interest might be down to title of post.  Bit of a tongue-twister, and sounds a bit medical - repository?  Or maybe I'm mixing that up biggrin  Or maybe everyone's terrified by the thought of your dodgy haircuts!!

At one stage I had collected probably hundreds of press clippings , photos, interviews of the Rats and Geldof. The word obsessed seems inadequete. These were from NME, Sounds, Melody Maker, Record Mirror and lots of other pop magazines of the girlie variety (Jackie, Fab 208, Mandy) Hey they belonged to my sister! Looking back a lot of this stuff was quite rare, but moving on with my life and after a number of house and apartment changes I decided to throw all this stuff out.

This was well before John Logie Baird had legged it down to the Patients Office and  invented  the Internet and document sharing and scanning came into existence- never mind forums which I though were some sort of Roman baths. I suppose a lot of the stuff is 'publicly available' if one just checks out old editions of NME, Sounds etc from back in the day, but a lot of the 'collection' was a bit more obscure eg Irish newspaper reviews of albums, odd pop magazines that I cannot remember the names of, lots of odds and ends. I took photos at Self Aid in Dublin April 1986, and I didn't realise it was the last Rats gig ever.

There honestly was so much stuff I cannot remember it all. It would have made for some interesting scans. One was Gerry Cott leaving the Rats with the headline 'When you Cotta go, you Cotta go' from Smash Hits summer 1981 (always remember that just from the punning title) Bits from the Irish Times, Dublin Evening Herald, Irish Independent from back in the day, basically anything to do with the Boomtown Rats or Bob Geldof.

Actually I used to keep a scrapbook of cuttings/pictures, but again , like Noel, threw it all out when moving house. Really wish I hadn't now obviously ....

Am keeping my tickets from Rats gigs now though

I've still got a good number of cuttings etc, although was thinking more of unique personal (and non copyrighted!) items in the main. Not sure tickets are copyrighted, well not after the event anyway smile, so they would make for interesting viewing, both factually (where/when) and in the context of social history (price/lost venues).

Might be easier for one of our number who shall remain nameless in his old gold shirt in the Black Country to charge us all admission to his Rats shrine cum museum (just waiting for that to get asterisked), but in meantime there must be some real gems in boxes and drawers out there.

I'll see what I've got and try to get the balls rolling.

I think I hear the sound of Mary Whitehouse turning in her grave!

Anyway the shrine/museum sounds like fun (see a straightforward piece of punctuation would have avoided any innuendo!)  And I'll refrain from commenting on gems in boxe(rs) or drawers - I suppose we'll have to wait and see if you can get those balls rolling ... You'll have to keep us posted!  No images though - copyrighted or otherwise.

I wouldn't worry about the copyrighting too much.  You can link to and show many things under fair use.

As an example, should you decide to post a review of an album then as long as the image is used to identify the album but couldn't be used to create a copy then that is fair use.

http://theboomtownrats.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/how-to-compose-popular-songs-that-will.html

If you link/display to an image for illustrative purposes and the image is not of photographic quality then it is unlikely that anyone will pursue you.  Similarly short excerpts of sound can be used in the same way.

You only have to look at the wallpaper and banner for this forum.  Purely illustrative, not high quality and with no consideration of profit.

Noel, I ended up trawling through all the 81 Smash Hits to find this, to no avail I might add! Not suggesting you got it wrong as I do have sections 'missing', or rather anything Rats related cut out and kept elsewhere, but couldn't find anything in all the 'Bitz' sections. Pretty clued up on when Don Snow joined Squeeze, when Adverts split, when Prince Charming came out and numerous other trivial items now though smile.

Did stumble across the competition to win a Yamaha 50cc bike though, with 25 signed copies of 12" Up All Night for runners up. Entry coupon cut out obviously. I own(ed) neither cry. Seem to remember that comp being mentioned elsewhere on forum as one for a coloured (blue?) vinyl copy. Can confirm it wasn't.

Did find some good long forgotten Geldof interviews and pics in 1985 Record Mirrors though, lamenting fact that ITLG was doomed in light of Band Aid even while he was mid tour promoting it.

Blimey! How on earth did you uncover that?

Funny thing is I now remember it, and have distinct feeling it was the first I knew of it too. Either way was absolutely gutted at the time.

Back up the loft it is then. Must have that issue somewhere.

The one I can't find, much to my annoyance as I know it's somewhere in a box, is the 85 edition with 'He Did It' on front cover. Straight after Live Aid.

So, it appears I have every other 1981 edition apart from the above confuse, all neatly stored in date order as well. Clearly missed the fact there was a gap on first trawl.

Maybe I never had it, but the pic/story did look familiar, and my newsagent used to save me copies. More likely it got mislaid in the mists of time.

Changing subject, read the 'Red Starr' review of One Step Beyond album from late 79. 'Temporary', 'this year's Members', 'dubious lyrics' apparently. Anyone got spare tickets for the Members' O2 gig this Christmas??

No, but I have a spare for Black Keys and Killers (night before Rats in Blackheath) at O2 and most likely Ray Davies at RAH next week.

And loads for the tennis at the O2.

Waiting for the NYE gig.  Last year I had half a dozen tickets for Kasabian and ended up not going. disbelief   There are rumours it could be The Rolling Stones, which would be very amusing as Walking with Dinosaurs is on either side of that date!

Somehow I seem to keep ending up with spare tickets lately.  No mates!

Apologies - lowest form of wit on my part. Was alluding to the review suggesting Madness would have the longevity of The Members, and just how badly wrong he was.

Suss and ArrGee: well done ArrGee for finding that 'Cotta go' clip- I remember it as being longer and with two 'Cotta goes'- must prove the case for false memory. One of the lost gems was an about eight page special from Record Mirror around the time of Mondo Bongo with lots of good photos of the lads on tour. Apparently the Police in Cumbria dropped charges after Geldof allegedly dropped his trousers somewhere at a motorway service station somewhere in Cumbria- the woman who had endured this didn't press charges, but Record Mirror included a letter from said Constabulary warning Geldof of his future conduct. The things you remember. Certainly I doubt that woman saw Bob as 'Saint Bob'.

There was a feature, by I think Gerry Cott, on the audience at Newcastle City Hall. A special from the Sunday Times magazine around the time of V Deep with Geldof insisting that V Deep was the Rats best record yet, and a preview of his new film The Wall with lots of good photos of his interesting new cropped hair look.

A lot of the magazines I read at that time can be found on 'the bay' as the kids call it. There was a magazine which came before Smash Hits called Words, which was a black and white rag that printed the latest seventies and early eighties songwords, and a lot of my clippings were from that and a similar magazine which also printed songwords and gossip. When I check ebay occasionally there are just so many magazines featuring the Rats- times change, now they're handing out London's Time Out for free.

Ok, until such times as this superb idea takes off and a public gallery is warranted, first and very possibly only entries from me (cue the Vision On music in background) are below.....Any others? Don't be shy now smile.

Couple from Live Aid approx 1pm, some (typical?? wink) bedroom shots from c.82 and 84, and a selection from Croydon 85 gig.

Initial thoughts are...ITLG tour really was no expense spared, as quite clearly was Suss haircut expenditure. Also interesting that gig billed as Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats. Comment/debates/rampant mickey-taking all welcome.

Thanks mate. Think 'interesting' might be stretching it but every picture tells a story and all that. Wembley mid 80s...still terraced and full of mulletts smile.  Not being remotely bothered about people smoking in my room....only grudgingly let them smoke in the garden nowadays smilesmile.

As for the drink, suspect it was supermarket lager. Staple diet back then. Amuses me that friend has pint, fag and inhaler to hand though.

Suspect the posters were/are familiar to many.

About time.  Haven't had a decent free listings magazine since Hot Tickets (aka Metro Life, though even after name changes everyone called it Hot Tickets) bit the dust.  Shame there's no TV guide in it, so I'll have to keep buying a newspaper at the weekend.

Really interesting clips - thanks very much for posting Suss. Quite a few I've never seen. What sort if date are we talking for the bedroom shots - late '81/ early '82? My mum let me put some up but restricted me to one small area of the bedroom wall and I wished I could have put more up.  I think the audience view of Live Aid Rats slot is brilliant and gives a real on the ground perspective I've never seen captured before. What else must be out there (as we've all often mused when a new You Tube clip surfaces)?

Cheers

Cheers guys.

The school uniform one would have been 82 at earliest judging by the blazer. Other one was at college, late 84. Had forgotten I used to cross out the days till end of term (red marker pen stuff on the left) - room was a bit of a cell though.

Guess I was lucky parents didn't limit my poster count. Sad thing is all 4 walls and available space was plastered with them. Would never claim to be any more avid than anyone else on here though. We wouldn't be on here otherwise smile.

Good to find some kindred spirits. Think I was the only truly obsessive Rats fan at school, certainly in my year anyway. Great to (belatedly) chew the fat with some very knowledgable fellow devotees.

There was me and a mate called Eddie who were equally obsessive from '78 to '81 at school but he drifted away from the Rats with  the release of Million Years, the record 'where he shouts too much' I always rememeber him saying. Unfortunately, millions had the same idea. I however stayed devoted, and became derided by '84, with most in my class dismissing Drag me Down as rubbish/nonsense (the economics teacher had not turned up and we were reviewing Razzmatazz from the previous night!).

They say everything is there somewhere in your mind. I had completely forgotten the 'Cotta go' clip, but having seen it again, it's the trigger for remembering reading it first time round...and feeling sad as I enjoyed his work. Also like Noel, I've thrown out so much I now wish I hadn't in various house moves and when I see Record Mirror going for £10 on the bay, I now see this as economic madness, except I wouldn't have thrown out anything Rats-orientated. It's ridiculous to think if I had kept every Record Mirror from '83, selling them could bring in over £300 on ebay.

Hmmm...I've got a couple of years worth of RM gathering dust. May be cash in the attic after all. Unlike the Smash Hits which were routinely subjected to the kitchen scissors for every last Rat reference/competition/advert/lyric/pic, the Record Mirrors somehow have remained intact. I must have been more mature by 83 or 84 wink.

Could always scan the rare Rat mention and see if even £100 comes in.

Changing subject. Mark, have you caught Garry/Simon's band? If so, what's your opinion?

I had the ceiling covered with posters as well.  However not necessarilly just Rats, I was never really able to find enough of their posters, so there was only about half a dozen of them.  I remember having a poster of Debbie Harry on the ceiling over my bed...

Certainly got your 'room with a view - a sight worth seeing - a vision' then wink

Don't remember having anything that wasn't Rat related, but my cause was helped no end by paper round and seeing what every mag had to offer each week. There were certainly enough in 78-80 to cover some square footage. Cause further helped by having a 10 x 9 room (in a mess obviously).

Did cheat a little with things like an A2 sized Snoopy poster, words of which are emblazoned on the memory - 'Mondays are the Sand Traps on the Golf Course of Life'.

Also filled any spare space with newsaper articles. There's a Mondays centrespread from Daily Mirror on the photo above. Remember one with (Sir) Cliff headlined I Do Like Tuesdays after he usurped number one spot with We Don't Talk Anymore. Must still have been chart update day in 79 I guess.

Did admire Ms Harry I have to admit...but not enough to displace Bob no.

Yes Suss, seen them just the once though. About 2 years ago at the Robin in Bilston (I'm from the Midlands so went one Sunday night after family visiting duties and dragged 'willing' brother along and chatted to Simon after who signed TFAOS CD). Thought they were good, Simon's drumming brilliant as ever and Pete Barton was decent enough. Mondays is obviously guitar-driven and interesting enough. My favourite album is TFAOS so would have preferred more from that, but it was a good night. Saw Bob at Lichfield earlier this summer, brother in reluctant (?) tow again and on balance slightly preferred this gig to the Robin one, brother strongly preferred Geldof gig. One of the main attractions of the Rats to me in the '70s was Geldof's charisma and voice - he certainly makes the most of what he's got and it's always choc-full of emotion and passion with a nasal Bowie-esq inflection which somehow delivers, as I suppose only the original author could do. It's this that's missing from the current Rats line-up but I would still go and see them again.

Fair comment, thanks. Was definitely the Geldof factor that set them apart for me back when, but the current Rats knock out the songs far more faithfully than his band in my view, in every respect except vocals anyway. But I digress....

Must dig out some more images to load, possibly scans of long lost articles to prompt discussion, assuming there's no copyright concern.

I go along with you there Suss. Maybe that's why I wasn't over impressed with Geldof at Islington. I fail to see the relevance of a ten minute plus 'version' of Banana Republic with a big muso self indulgent bit in the middle, jamming along, and taking the sting out of the song. If I wanted to see Geldof do an inprov night thats another story but this unnecessary musical dilution by stretching out the song and losing the point just annoys me.

I did look at it again on YouTube and had to switch off half way through Banana Republic (Geldof, Islington). Punk was good because the songs were direct and to the point so why ruin a good thing. Ok I know Banana Republic is not punk but hey. The new band seem to play a more of less straight rendition of the records. No matter how much I like the original Rats live, Geldof had a habit of mangling the songs live- not always but enough to make me prefer the records to the live gig.

Ok I know live music is about the atmosphere and thrill and spontanaiety of seeing your heroes in real life. Both Pete Barton and Bob Bradbury refrain from any self indulgent muso crap and just deliver the songs and melody correctly. Strangely it's almost an advantage that they more or less had to 'learn' the songs. To be honest it was almost sacrilege to even think of anyone else tackling the Rats songs apart from Geldof. Now I'm less sure.

Geldof's voice and singing always contributed to the overall 'feel' or sound of the band. It had a particular emotional quality that's hard to express in words, all good singing voices have this quality. Faithfulness to the original sound and melody is why often lets down Geldof's latter covering of Rats songs- a certain laziness and sometimes needless band jamming to prove the band are 'real musicians'. The overall image of Geldof's band and things like using ukuleles and violins on Rats songs doesn't help either.

Overall the new version of the Rats do a better job on Rats songs. Geldof doing his own solo career songs is no real cause for complaint, but I'll say again with both the Rats and Geldof solo, I prefer the original recordings to the 'could go anyway' live renditions.

Is it just performance/space that led to most of my inserted pics disappearing, or is there something more 'legal' I should know about?

There's very little I'd disagree with there Noel. You quite rightly point out that Banana Republic is strung out for no particular reason and for me it was irritating at Lichfield. I felt Mondays was better there however with Geldof at the helm, but this is the thing, there's always going to be pluses and minuses and people will feel them differently. My brother thought Banana Republic was better elongated.....go figure!

As I say, if I get the chance, I would definitely see the Rats again. Simon and Garry were both brilliant and we had a good night with probably a better atmosphere than Lichfield. They also did not keep us waiting for an hour and fifteen minutes to see us all at the end.  That's a quarter of an hour (plus an hour) too long!

Now ideally, but unrealistically perhaps, you will get no prize for guessing what I'd really like to see on stage.

I think I went to most of the solo Geldof concerts more to get a glimpse of, or be in the presence of the great man, rather than expecting a note perfect rendering of old Rats songs. Same with most music fans, we live with the recordings and live gigs tend to be an alcoholic or class A blur, barely remembered the next day.

Better get back to the suppository or repository of images......being for the benefit of Mr Suss.

Suppository! biggrin - PMSL LMFAO ROFLMAO as dear old Joan would say.

And don't worry about thread drifiting on my account. Think I was the original deviant anyway. Good concensus on their relative merits. I certainly intend to make the most of remaining opportunities to see gigs having jumped pretty late onto the wagons of each band in recent years.

Did once think I'd never latch onto Geldof again after his solo offerings, but have enjoyed the 4 gigs I've managed so far. He's still got that X factor that's for sure.

Maybe that's why I wasn't over impressed with Geldof at Islington...

Geldof live is a mixed bag for all.  There are some ups (the Mary/Joey/Rat Trap sequence was the best 15 minutes or so of live music I have been witness to and bookending the gig with The Great Song of Indifference), some downs, (Sex Thing, Harvest Moon, Walking Back to Happiness, Vajazzled by You and Silly Thing), some surprises (Six Pack, Mudslide and Scream in Vain are quite formidable live) .   I found the Surfacing trio of songs (Mondays, Diamond Smiles, and When The Night Comes) less than awe-inspiring but acceptable, and there were probably some other Geldof solo songs that washed over me.  I actuaally enjoyed the long Banana Republic.

Overall, after seeing Geldof, it was better than expected, but patchy.

But when I first saw the new Rats at the 100 Club...  That was absolutely awesome.  They even had Diamond Smiles mercifully excluded at that point.  Aside from the re-hash of Mondays, it was more or less how I would have imagined a Rats gig sounding back in 1977.   It was far better than I expected, especially with the three Feelgood songs, and possibly the best 90 minutes in my life since Anfield 1989.

The one thing I did get confirmed at that gig, though Geldof's solo efforts had raised my suspicions, was that the rest of the band, certainly in the early days made a big contribution to the music, so much so that other singers could not only do the songs justice, but arguably improve them.  Pete Barton's voice is far more formidable than Geldof's even if it is less distinctive.  I reserve comment on new Bob for the time being.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.  I didn't really consider seeing Geldof at Islington last time around though I live very nearby, but have the Blackheath gig marked on the calendar since it was announced and may yet make it to Dublin.

Ultimately, it's the songs and the sound I love.

Pretty late?  Neither band was really in existance until recently.  You'd have done well to have seen Geldof prior to the last tour as he was always cancelling the gigs.

For me, though I enjoyed the Geldof gig I saw, it was a bit different that night at Cadogan Hall from the run of the mill Geldof gig.    Fortunately he does play most of the solo songs I like, but there are far too many for me to really enjoy the gig.

I am planning to see Ray Davies tomorrow night (if I get a ticket, my usual brinksmanship), but if he plays any solo material, ( he has five solo LPs like Geldof), I'll be heading for the bar.   In fact, if he plays anything post-1970, except for tracks off Low Budget, I'll be at the bar.

I think that the atmosphere is the key thing. The two times I have seen the new Rats, it has been a stand up affair in venues with readily available bars.  With Geldof, it was a comfy seat at the front with the bar a fair distance away.  Fortunately, Geldof does ramble on between songs, so it's just possible to get a beer in between.

The two Rats gigs started out with a lot of energy and pretty much preserved it from start to finish.  With Geldof, there are too many lulls,  everytime it gets going, there's a song like Harvest Moon to suck away the atmosphere.  Only when he played Mary of the 4th Form did the whole venue become energised.

As it is one of their principal crops, the price is very low.  Obviously there is the inflationary impact of a lot of the arable land turning to desert, but in general, it is one of the cheaper staples.

I used to worry about thread drift, but to be honest if people can't filter out the cr@p I come up with in the dozen or so posts in each thread they should stick to twitter.

Did you see Ray, ArrGee?  Saw him in Southampton on Saturday - really enjoyed it!  He had a standing ovation at end and everyone remained standing for the encore.  Obviously enjoyed the old stuff - but Celluloid Heroes (1972) is a fave too!

No, I didn't in the end.  I was looking at the tickets at 4.30pm and then they suddenly went off sale...

Anyway, sure he'll be back to play in London soon (he seems to be playing Fairfield Halls on Wednesday).

I keep missing gig announcements recently, apparently Julian Cope is in Harlow on Friday, but I only got wind of it when checking out the Rats appearing there.  Sold out.

It was Lisa who suggested that your original title was a 'bit medical'.Repository does have a sort of medical ring to it. How about the Rats repository and the Glorious Geldof Gallery.smile.gif

Do you think a live double album Bob Geldof live in Ulan Bator would shift units? Thanks for the info on potato prices in Outer Mongolia. That's exactly why Marconi invented the Internet.smile.gif

What, the guy who played guitar for Adam Ant?? Well I never knew that....

Part of me thinks I really should scan some articles, or photo some posters etc, and steer thread back. The other part of me can't summon the energy to climb loft ladder.

One for a rainy day...

There must be some others who have pics from the past??

Oh, and public apology to Lisa for missing her subtle reference in repository etc. Too subtle for me. Besides, was our esteemed mod who created the title above when it got moved from Other Stuff, which ironically is where it probably needs to return. Mongolian spuds? confuse

No, that's Marco Pirroni.  His beer is really nice with a Sloppy Guiseppe.

I have never owned a camera, until they came bundled with mobile phones that is.  My wife has one, so I never bothered.  In the past they seemed so fiddly with the reels of film and now they are digital, I'll let someone else take the pictures.  I truly hate having people taking photos during any live event.  Just put it away and watch it.

I remember when I used to share a house, how mind numbing it was to have to sit and look through the thousands of pictures some amateur photographer has taken of some African plain.  Seen one field, seen them all, in my opinion.

My collection of photgraphs is a motley collection of extra prints, most of which I chucked, and the odd snap sent to me via the internet.

So I don't have any Rats photos whatsoever.  Well, except the one Wes sent me from the 100 Club!

I must say I agree!  At Islington there was someone right in front of me with arms up in air clicking away - really distracting!  Having said that I do like to see a few select photos if anyone has them - but again feel if you're just looking to snap/record it all, there's not much point as you really can't be taking it all in as it happens.  Mind you if I was any good at photos maybe I might change my mind!  The occasional photo I take on my phone usually stays there till I badger someone to transfer it on to computer as it's all far too fiddly for me to bother with!  Technophobe, moi? biggrin

I always find it a bit bemusing when people walk around Dublin and take photos mindlessly, of things that are not even important. Mostly these are foreign tourists who I supect largely know very little about Irish culture and will happily snap a tourist pub in Temple Bar as being some icon of Irishness.

Be Here Now as the old meditation slogan goes, but it seems most people seem to video their experiences to play back later. Even seen anyone walking down a street videoing it, and not actually looking at the buildings, but just getting a recorded second hand experience to play back later? Technology to a large degree facilitates this sort of mindlessness. A new blank generation.

One of my pet hates is when someone poses on one side of the pavement for whatever reason (wall, bridge etc.), and has someone on the kerb taking their photo.  So as not to be rude I stop so they can take the picture.  They then take ages messing around taking the sodding picture, before asking me to take a picture of the two of them.  Then as I go to leave, they decide the picture I have taken isn't quite up to scratch and ask me to take another!

Put that camera away, 'tis the devils work!

I'm amazed that tourists are so trusting with their cameras. Hang around on the Halfpenny Bridge in Dublin long enough and someone is bound to ask you to take a photo of their group.

I find it very annoying that people are constantly on their phones.  At the cinema recently some woman was taking a picture of her kid with the flash furious Even when I requested she put her phone away, she was still checking her messages or playing games.  At the football, the bloke next to me only took pictures or was on tw@tface or whatever it is #tw@t.  And at most concerts if you are not at the front, it's people shouting at their mobiles to their mates who ain't there!   Recently, I saw a couple out for a meal who didn't speak to each other at all.  They just spoke/played on the mobiles!

It's life by proxy. One day, I will grab someone's phone/camera/tablet and destroy it ala Kate Winslet in Carnage.   I feel the anger welling...

Guilty till proven guilty? Don't suppose there's any mileage in me vainly arguing it was for ironic purposes your honour?

Exhibit A - from Geldof pages 17/02/12 - "Also got a Brighton ticket. Will be doing a Scottie/Jules/Musicmania and getting a 'hug' avatar photo next at this rate....."

Had the camera at that '85 Croydon gig (see above), and went to stage door for autographs, but resisted the temptation to ask. Not sure why admittedly.

With hindsight would have been great to have some pics with Geldof/band as 90% of population remember them.

Of of the new modern 'ailments' (for some) is 'update anxiety'. I suppect for most of us older people things are ok, but  especially for teenagers and twenty somethings it's the age of anxiety, constantly being available and having to tell everyone what you're up to all day long.

Perhaps irrational or not I always feel annoyed at people on hands free mobiles, chatting as the walk down the steet. When I was growing up an android was something you might see on Buck Rogers in the 25 Century.

Now that is annoying.  I was sat on DLR the other day and the bloke sat next to me was just talking to himself.  Even he realised it was getting silly and came off the hands free.  The great thing about the underground is the lack of a signal down there.  If only people could be persuaded to buy decent headphones so you didn't have to listen to the tinny noise.  I swear these people will be deaf before they leave their teens.

For some reason whenever I used to ride the 79A bus out to Park West the locals seemed to think their music was so good they'd have it on speaker for all to enjoy...  It wasn't.  I suppose at least I can turn on my own mp3 player if I haven't let the charge go down through lack of use.
