From the Critics' Choice page in the Culture supplement of today's Sunday Times comes this from John Dugdale:
"As Live 8 was broadcast by the BBC, you might expect a behind-the-scenes BBC series about the concert to be a self-congratulatory excercise that omits embarrassments and pulls its punches. In fact. it depicts the process of putting the event together as chaotic, and contains often hilarious footage of Bob Geldof and Harvey Goldsmith - 20 years older than when they collaborated on Live Aid, as Richard Curtis points out - behaving badly.
The first part deftly shows multiple obstacles being overcome, ranging from St Bob's initial reluctance to stage a Live Aid II to disputes over the line-up and number of tickets. Admirably unafraid of airing criticisms of Live 8 and the coalition behind it, the series on this evidence gets the balance between rock-biz comedy and earnest chronicle of a political campaign exactly right, and you could not wish for a better trio of main interviewees than Geldof, Curtis and U2's Bono."
Sounds promising! Will have to programme the old VCR Tuesday night.
And I see The Sunday Times magazine's article "2005 - The Year in Pictures" devotes four photos to Live 8.
Just been told there is something on on Friday too, not sure whether it is a repeat. I'll check it out and post back tomorrow. Looks like I've been given false info. I've scoured the TV pages for Friday and can see nothing. Sorry .
I've only watched bits and pieces of part one and most of part two (following my very late return home last night from a really excellent Coldplay gig at the Odyssey in Belfast), but must say it looks great. Richard Curtis makes some a few choice observations about Bob - nothing too damning and really quite humerous. Lots of interview footage with Bob.
yeah they were excellent but i only managed to see half of the 1st one on tuesday.but what i saw was really good.they were really honest, you know, the truth, nothing hidden
I accidentally made two DVD copies of these programmes. So I have one to give away, to someone who missed these great programmes. Send me a PM if you're interested!
