Pick of the Pops featured 1978 and great to hear the Rats riding high with Rat Trap

Not so good was the thought that this is now 34 years ago and if the next 34 years passes as quickly as the last, and I'm still here, I will be 80. Doesn't time fly?

Still, Tony Blackburn - who was 35 when he presented them on TOTP in '78 and who is therefore 69 as he presented them today on Radio 2 -  will be 103.

1980 was featured with the Rats at 5 with Banana Republic (down 2 from last week's 3, so not played)

I recall listening avidly to the charts each week and thinking 32 years ago, this might have gone to 2 or 1 this week, having shot up from 9 to 3, the week before. Abba had had 2 weeks at 1 already and I felt sure Grandma would run out of steam. Wrong again.

1978 featured again on Tony Blackburn's Pick of the Pops and a good show too, with the Stones, The Rats and the Motors. Unfortunately, the Smurfs were in there but what can you do?

Available on the i-player for those who need to 'catch-up'

Yesterday technically (Hi Lisa!)

Popmaster question: Which song features the opening lines 'There was a lot of rockin going on that night, cruising time........'

Contestant unable to answer.

Or unable to type it into Google quickly enough, some might say.

Pick of the Pops this coming Saturday features 1972 and 1982. I think House on Fire was around mid April '82 so there's a chance Mr Blackburn will include it.

Pick of the Pops featured 1978. Now 36 years ago!

Seems Radio 2 is cutting back. This show will now get a repeat at 3am Thursdays along with other 'selected' shows,  every morning of the week between 3am and 5am. Sounds of the 80s, 60s shows will also feature.

Yesterday, actually, on Pop Master:

What year were the Boomtown Rats number one with Rat Trap?

Contestant: 1989?

One year (and one decade! ) out.

Stupid trivia question - What year did Rat Trap reach #1 in the Irish Charts?

I'm guessing this is something to do with that bloody turkey or whatever it was??

Did Rats themselves not hit the top at home then?

Geldof had to wait until he hooked up with Dustin (The Turkey) It could only happen here. He did try to get this stopped from coming out you know

This big Irish number 2 from '78 played at 7.18 this morning by Chris Evans who declared it 'probably my favourite Boomtown Rats track.  A very good tune.'

It is possibly my favourite song by anyone.  Certainly in the top dozen or so.  Vies with a few others depending on my mood.

Haven't cheated by looking up but my guess for #1 in Ireland would be late eighties/early nineties, so I'll plump for 1990. Standing by for scorn equivalent to the guy on Pop Master quiz (or maybe he was thinking of the Dustin version?? smile)

What kept Rats off the top in Ireland in '78 then? Again, too lazy to search in hope someone on here has facts at their fingertips...

I suppose on the upside the sexy (NOT!)  Rod Stewart didn't make #1 in Ireland.

Note to Rod should he happen to read this; big nose, spikey peroxide hair and leopard skin pants ain't sexy, so shut the fcuk up!

well that's what I said to one of my ex-girlfirends  evileye
