First of all I'm delighted the Rats will be performing together again but I was just thinking about the various motives. I suspect to a large degree it is friends getting who in the past have achieved remarkable success in the music business. I doubt there is too much of a financial motivation.
More likely it is one last chance to appear on a few (hopefully more) big stages, and rekindle the memories of earlier success. I suspect Geldof knows that getting together with the Rats will bring him a certain amount of publicity than touring with his solo band never could.
Perhaps they will record again, and show what a great recording band they were. Maybe Geldof has Rats songs stores somewhere in his psyche that need telling. Even a four track ep would be wondrous, if not a full album.
Can anyone else think of any motivations for a reunion cynical or otherwise?

It would be somewhat financial for all bar Geldof. Some decent apperance fees, possibly some decent box office. Even the outside chance of increased record sales and possbly mechandise, though the gains from these would be limited.
The publicity may be a factor for Geldof, also he does like a big crowd and the adoration which would be bigger than he would get solo. More likely I would turn up, so that's one extra at least.
For Roberts & Crowe, they have been doing this for four to five years now with little reward to fairly meagre audiences. I suspect mainly because they enjoy it.
I don't expect any recording. I don't really see the point.
I think they will play a few shows in the UK and Ireland, mostly festivals once the IoW exclusive has passed. Probably play some dates at European festivals.
I don't see any cynical reason because I don't think it will be that lucrative. Maybe they have just read this forum and know how much pleasure it would bring to a few people. Especially those like me who thought it would never happen.
Perhaps it's just a thank you from the band to us for still enjoying what they did after all these years, and if they bring some pleasure to those who just happen to chance upon them at various dates then all the better.

For me the lifeblood of music is new recordings, new songs and proving that a band can still deliver, and surprise. Geldof was criticised by Russel Brand saying (about Mondays) what has Geldof done in the last 35 years? A great band like the Rats, if the choose to do some new songs will not disappoint. I don't believe in the fossilisation of a band and would rather an honourable failure with some new songs than hearing the same old stuff we all know so well.
Geldof always says he's a musician and songwriter and why should he slag off current music if he cannot come up with something new and wonderful himself. The joy of songwriting is coming up with something better, interesting and that adds to a bands reputation. Of course the Iow gig will be a greatest hits showcase, but hopefully down the line a bit there will be a new album.
At least if might show that Geldof doing Rats songs is a lot better than Geldof doing his solo thing. My instinct tells me that a new record is more likely, but not in the immediate future- perhaps a year or two down the line, and depending on the reaction to the upcoming gigs. I still think Geldof and the Rats are capable of writing decent new tunes and they have unfinished business both on stage and in the studio.
