I was wondering if anybody could help me.... I recently brought a copy of A Tonic for the Troops from a charity shop, the woman told me that this version was special and i should check out if it was worth anything.
I got home, checked on Discogs i cant seem to find this copy on there.
Basically, the cataloge number is Envy 3 (same as usual)
Its release year is 1978 (same as usual)
Its the green label version (as opposed to the grey one)
The run-outs are the same
The only difference is that the back of the sleeve has no track listing or any info at all. just the normal picture of the band and the paint... (is the back of the sleeve meant to be the wrong way up so that the band are sideways?!)
I am really sorry if this is a stupid question and i am wasting your time and sound like a moron but i dont have another copy to compare it to!
Sorry can't help you with this Emily. It would seem to me a record is only valued at what someone is willing to pay for it. I doubt there is a queue of people willing to fork our for a copy of a well known album, just because there is no track listing or info on the back. Maybe it's an early test pressing, I don't really know too much about these things.
The real value is in the songs, rather than some cosmetic difference in the cover. Maybe someone else can help you, I understand it's natural to be curious about anomalies on record covers etc. Maybe the missing track listings is the place to get a few of the Rats autographs if you get a chance to see them play live and bring it along!
Thanks for your help, don't worry I am not looking to sell it! Ive been after this album for a while and i was just curious, managed to get a few other bargains too but the comment from the lady behind the counter just interested me thats all. Thanks again. x

I have both copies, apart from the tracklisting part they are exactly the same. They both have WESSEX WIZARDS and DUN LOAGHAIRE scratched on the run off. The paint effect is deliberate, it is meant to continue from the front cover (it doesn't really, but it is meant).
I couldn't hand on heart say which is the earliest version. The one with the track listing is the one I bought originally back in 1978, but I bought it a few weeks after the release, probably in September. The other one I got second hand as I'd worn out the first one.
But the woman who sold you it was right, it is a special version, cos it's a special album
