Note how Ged / Jed chose not to reply to Ken Bruce's diplomacy effort!
About 5 years ago or so, the 'name 3 hits by the Boomtown Rats' finale question was posed on Popmaster and the winner was, as might be expected, only able to answer with Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays.
Simon Mayo had Geldof in on Radio 2's Drivetime around the time 'How to Compose' was released and I recall in 1992, on his Radio 1 Breakfast show, Mayo made Room 19 his record of the week, preceded by an interview in which Geldof sounded horrific - it was about 7.20am! The following week, Mark Goodier was sitting in for Mayo and clearly Room 19 was not one of his highlights of 1992.
Simon Mayo I think quite likes Geldof and his music and his Breakfast show featured 'Mondays' several times from 1988 to 1993, with Rat Trap, 'Indifference' and Banana Republic all being played too. 'Republic' was definitely played in 1990 as I recall Mayo saying 'can you believe this song is exactly ten years old now'. 'Indifference' was not a record of the week, but got lots of plays with Mayo frequently interjecting with 'if you know the dance steps, you can join in at this point'.
The frightening bit is it means it is a quarter of century since Simon 'and the crew' began that show and I remember it vividly, so glad was I that the rather bland Mike Smith was leaving after 2 years.
I listen to BBC 5 live a lot and Simon Mayo was a great presenter, still does the film programme on Fridays with Mark Kermode. He was replaced by Richard Bacon on 5 live. As much as I like music I prefer speech radio, current affairs and sport, so 5 Live or Radio 4 I find more stimulating when listening to the BBC.
Not sure if I listened to the right bit yesterday, all I got was a Brendford fan who had a grudge against QPR doing the quiz. Skipped through and found a version of Thin Lizzy doing a song called Bound For Glory, which is the book from which the Rats took their name.
OK Ian, got that. Jed was a roadie for the Rats. Says they were good before Geldof got 'arty farty' ie V Deep/Mondo Bongo.
Funny I missed that bit yesterday, I remember the guy doing the quiz was a Brentford fan who didn't like QPR. Maybe wasn't expecting him to say he was a roadie with the Rats, but did spend some time looking for the Rats reference. Think I'll stick to 5 live!
Much prefer Mayo to Evans on Drivetime on Radio 2. Lost count of the times he has played Rat Trap on this show but it seems to come round once every three or four months......not heard him play any other Rats/solo tunes mind....
He used to have a feature on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show called the Identik-Hit quiz. The basic idea was that Mayo, along with all or some of his "crew" would act out a scene of just a few seconds in length, which should have led listeners to the title of a well-known hit song, from any era. Sometimes sound effects on their own were enough to get the clue across; such as when a long clip of a car being driven was played without any deviation in noise for junctions or distractions - hence the right answer of Road to nowhere by Talking Heads; or when effects of a heartbeat and a door opening were played in unison - hence the right answer of Room In Your Heart by Living in a box.
If memory serves me well, I'm sure Looking after No 1 was the song guessed right on one occasion but apart from the voice of Martin Luther King, I cannot recall what else the clues were.
The Identik-Hit Quiz ceased to air after Mayo left the breakfast show in 1993
