I've been watching a fair bit of live in concert DVD's recently, by various bands. Some really good ones, capturing bands at their peak, from the comfort of your own armchair!
One of two stand out like The White Stripes at Glastonbury 2005 (Peppermint Parade) Amazing at how Jack and Meg White can command a stage as big as Glastonbury and really put on a show. Brilliantly lit nighttime headline show.
Also seen two T Rex Concerts from 1972 on DVD as part of Born To Boogie DVD Release. T Rex were a bit before my time, but Marc Bolan must be one of the most captivating rock stars ever. Songs were a bit poppy but as a rock star Bolan just oozes class, as seemed like a nice guy too.
Radiohead Astoria London 1994, and Glastonbury 2003. Amazing how seeing a band on DVD can bring them to life.
Unlike 'real' gigs DVD's can cover all the angles, with brilliant positions and swooping overhead shots, and nobody spilling their warm lager over you, or blocking your view or irritatingly singing along to the songs either. Needn't get your ears blasted either.
Does anyone have any recommended live in concert DVD's.
PS Rats at Hammersmith is a classic, without doubt.
I saw Pulp live in Dublin around 1993/94 just before the became mainstream. I had originally seen them on BBC tV live from Sheffield Leadmill I think, and was impressed with songs like Razzmatazz and Stacks and Babies.
It is interesting about how the look of a band can appeal ,and equally some bands even with good songs can be a bit unappealing. Geldof and Jarvis have charisma in bucketloads (or at least the used to!) Some bands can fall under the worthy but dull category.
Another good one is Bob Marley at The Rainbow 1977. Almost every big name band has two or three officially recorded live DVD's that show them in their prime.
. Needn't get your ears blasted either.
