Absolutely Fcuking Mega at The Isle of Wight

There in spirit anyway.  They kept showing a guy in a absolutely fcuking mega Rats T Shirt.  Where can I get one of them? biggrin

  • Eva Braun
  • Clockwork
  • Neon Heart
  • She's Gonna Do You In
  • Someone's Looking At You
  • Lookin' After No 1
  • Mondays

All above were broadcast on You Tube.

Which I guess leaves She's So Modern, Mary and Rat Trap to round things off.

Brilliant performance overall. Loved SLAY and Eva Braun particularly. The old chemistry was definitely back, Geldof looked more the rock frontman sans guitar and there was less in the way of naff windmill dancing. Festival-aside, too much effing and jeffing as usual when younger people may be around and then complains about the 'world we created'.

Shorter hairstyle suits him and loved the return of the 1978 Rat Trap sunglasses! You forget at times he's nearly 62.

Unfortunately they cut the stream when Mondays concluded, but I had the best seat in the house.   On three occassions they showed Wes in the crowd.  Maybe cos he was the only one wearing a Rats T-Shirt.

Hard to tell what the crowd reaction was, but it sounded like people were lapping it up, especially when they all shouted "ABSOLUTELY FCUKING MEGA BOB!"  and sang along to Mondays.  Very good decision to replace Diamond Smiles with Someone's Looking.

I did manage to record the audio, so I can pop it onto my MP3 player.  A couple of drop outs, but nothing major.  Sadly my efforts to record any images was doomed.

Was very nervy waiting for the broadcast though.  It was very late in the day that they confirmed they would stream it and then they kept threatening to go to another stage.  But I guess they were hanging on for Mondays.

A review from the south coast...

http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/leisure/reviews/10489091.Isle_of_Wight_Festival_review__Bon_Jovi_rock_the_island_but_The_Killers_put_on_best_show_of_the_weekend/

Earlier in the day the fabulous Boomtown Rats performed together for the first time in 27 years.

Bob Geldof dispensed some pearls of wisdom from the stage, despite promising not to go into a "Sir Bob rant."

After inquiring about where everyone had slept the night before he simply chanted "Don't Get Caught" before launching into brilliant versions of Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays.

Wes had his ArrGee creation on show as he's not a southern softie like me who had a shirt obscuring same, as we thought it would be cool and prob wet. Was actually pretty hot in the sun. Lisa was also donning the long sleeve one, and Joke/Ronald also sporting theirs.

Shame you weren't there to flog some more. No official merchandise (or even unofficial) for the Rats.

So, with one eye on commission wink, can highly recommend that people on here snap up the exclusive (and good) quality t-shirts off ArrGee as the only merch capturing the first gig in 27 years, while stocks last.

Mark's one was a classic band photo from around 77, printed onto white tee. I've traded a LANO tee with him to supply me with one lke his. Almost got enough to sport a different shirt every night in Oct/Nov smile, but will be cold enough by then to need something over the top again biggrin

I had Ratified thirst on. Lisa had BTR sweatshirt on. In fact most of the Rats pack did.

Geldof had the audience eating out of the palm of his had. He walked on stage with mega rock star attitude and pulled it off well. Lost it later and got on with having fun. Think it took a bit of getting used to having cameramen following them around stage, especially for Pete. No errors. It was alright on the night and I expect they were happy with their performance and would seriously question it if not.

You can do what Joke did and have your own printed.  All I need is your email address to send you the images.

Planning a new T-shirt for the forthcoming UK tour.   Just waiting for all the dates (especially Dublin).

Watching on my computer.   Definitely going to The Roundhouse along with Cork.    Depending on the weather will go to Devon with Mrs. ArrGee and the kids.  And if my chauffeur is OK with picking me up, Cambridge.

nice one, see you in camden then arrgee

well i dont know how it was for you watching on your comp. but the atmosphere was electric at iow when rats were peforming.......... i feel really energised.... despite it being a long day....... the electricity still seems to be in the air around me, festy airwaves still round my head, was a sad moment when i cut the wristband off......... sat here this afternoon chilled......... bob radiated energy and vitality, he clearly enjoyed it as much as everyone else........ alive and cosmic man.

wow

blissfully chilled now, re-energised and i shall imagine whatever it was radiating from bob charging the atmosphere and the current that seemed to flow around the stage yesterday afternoon, reaching me still.

phew

dynamite

Brilliant day - obviously Rats were THE best by a mile! Wore my long sleeved t-shirt with pride, Arrgee! Got stopped later in the afternoon by a lovely couple who wanted to know where they could get one - I referred them to the forum, so if you get any enquiries that's why - and we can negoitate commission later They were so impressed by the Rats' performance though, and many others were heard in the crowd after saying how great it had been.
A wonderful weekend - really enjoyed meeting up with fellow fans, all lovely people. Great to go dancing with Joan in the pub on saturday evening too Didn't find the festival experience too scary though was exhausted by end of evening - it's a long day! Was even impressed by the loos, and the queues were never bad. Would definitely go the IOW festival again.

Don't know if anyone saw this review:

Oh and it was great that the weather was so good - was worried I'd get sunburnt at one point, but at least I had my long-sleeved shirt for protection

Didn't really need the wellies - but I think we all agreed it was cool to wear them and only geeks didn't, eh Suss??

I'm a geek. My wellies (not willies) rubbed my legs so I took them off. Cool to be asked about THAT tshirt .

Also available on eBay.  I was watching the stream with son and daughter and they shouted out when they saw Wes with the T-Shirt.   My son reckons I should quit my job and start selling T-shirts.  Thing is I've still not broke even yet, but all I have left are two large (one short sleeved and one long sleeved) which is my size so it's not too bad as I can have them for my vacation [For the record I already have two].

Other sizes would have to be ordered.    And I need to make a £20 minimum order which means ordering two or three.   And if anyone wants one for Cork, order soon.

Well if you cover my expenses, I could help out by modelling them at festivals, gigs, weddings, bar mitzvahs, maybe not funerals though ...

biggrin

I'd happily live the rest of my days wearing a geek t-shirt rather than wellies, and would actively welcome the pain of trenchfoot over the excruciating embarrassment of wearing them biggrin

Did look quite good on the teenage Script fans in tiny denim shorts though I have to admit. What were their girl fans wearing by the way???

Joke was stopped by a young boy who said, my Dad would be very proud to see you in that t shirt. He's the bassist in the band . ...

Everyone loves Boomtown Bob

http://www.key103.co.uk/music/features/review-isle-of-wight-festival-2013/

Somewhat surprisingly though, the story of the festival has to go to The Boomtown Rats and Bob Geldof who played their first show together in 27 years on the Sunday afternoon.

The Bob Geldof that Ive known wasnt present but Boomtown Bob, the maverick punk, came out in full force. Wearing a faux-snakeskin suit and Aviator glasses, Geldof jumped and jived his way through a hit packed set, rolling back the years. In reference to his amazing suit, Geldof explained that it was the only way he felt he could get Boomtown Bob back and it certainly worked.

His voice was spot on and, as a collective band, they were very neat and, all-in-all, showed a togetherness that made you question why it had taken 27 years for them to come back together. Save the World Geldof reared his head once or twice between songs, sending quite pertinent messages; drawing similarities in society between now and the last time they played before paying tribute to the victims of last weeks Santa Monica college shooting before playing I Dont Like Mondays- a song performed with such clarity and emotion that it was difficult not to feel a lump in the back of your throat as Sir Bob highlighted his views on society.

Following from a over running Newton Faulkner, the Rats comeback was almost cut short it seemed as a planned encore of Rat Trap nearly didnt go ahead as in the wings Geldof could been seen lambasting organisers who had suggested that they were already over running themselves, but the Rats returned to raucous applause to finish their set in style.

Insomnia strikes, so go downstairs and what's on TV?  - only Sky Arts showing the Boomtown Rats at the Isle of Wight 2013.

Short programme showing 4 songs only: Clockwork,  Do you in, Mondays, Rat Trap.

Trouble is,  now I'm Up All Night.
