I know, I know. The announcement of Bob's live gigs only appears on the site after confirmation by the management.
So, I probably won't get an answer to this enquiry. But I thought it worth a try.
"If" Bob is appearing at 'The 17th Annual East Coast International Blues and Roots Music Festival' to be held over Easter at Byron Bay, Australia (as listed at http://www.bluesfest.com.au/) ... yes, I know it hasn't been confirmed on this site ... I am wondering whether Bob would travel all the way to Oz and only play at the Byron Bay Festival (pending confirmation, I understand).
In other words, is there any hope of Bob doing a tour of Oz to follow up the 2002 gigs? I know, I know, there won't be an official answer to this until the (potential) papers are signed, sealed and delivered.
I fully realise rumours are just that, and hopes can be dashed if appearances aren't confirmed.
At the same time, logistics in Oz are completely different to the UK. "If" Bob plays at Byron Bay, a ticket covering the as-yet unannounced playlist would cost $A350.00. Then there would be accommodation costs, on top of transport costs. Byron Bay is (very roughly) about 1000km north of Sydney, and (again, very roughly) about 2500km north of Melbourne. So seeing Bob in Byron Bay would be a major expedition for anyone not living in close proximity, and involve a big monetary (and time) outlay.
So here's the dilemma. Do we in Oz buy tickets to Byron Bay to see Bob (granted it's not official yet) and with the leftover change book accommodation and pay for food and petrol? And arrange days off work etc etc. Because that's the only opportunity we'll have to see him.
Or would it be possible for the management to announce, at the same time that the Byron Bay gig is made official (if it is), whether Bob will be doing a gig in any of the capital cities (a la 2002). This would give those who want to see Bob a much better idea of whether travelling to Byron Bay would be the only way, or if there were other possibilities.
As they say in the classics, hope springs eternal!
"We would strongly advise all those interested in Geldof appearances, releases etc.. to go to the News Section of bobgeldof.info and register on the new world wide mailing lists. Particularly those based in Europe and Australia." (Ian, in the topic of World Wide Mailing List Registration, Geldof section)
I don't know quite what to make of that. But it certainly does raise some hope.
Here's my suggestion, based on experience, unfortunately: Wait for confirmation, and arrange for travel and lodging (anything that requires a downpayment) as late as you can once the gig has been confirmed. If you're willing to risk a bit of trouble, you can buy the tickets, and if Bob doesn't show up you can resell them on eBay.
Firstly, I've found I overestimated the distances a tad - oops - but you get the general idea ...
MJ - thanks for your advice, espescially as it's the voice of experience. Melbourne to Byron Bay is no comparison to Montreal to London - in terms of both distance and logistics!
One has to wonder why there's such difficulty.
Katherina - thanks also. Yes, I'd seen that, and like you, wondered what the implication was. Also, in the 'News Section' listing the new mailing lists, before going on to repeat the general blurb, the Australian one mysteriously begins with:
"We would strongly advise Australian based Geldof fans to register on this new mailing list facility as soon as possible."
Seems a hopeful implication there as well .
Then again, the blurb for the North American Territories mailing list inexplicably contains the extra info that:
"... we already have some provisional dates in Europe, these should be confirmed soon."
This doesn't appear in the European mailing list info.
Since we have absolutely no facts at all, we can speculate
I'm thinking that on the promoter's side, hinting to an artist's appearance is a way to
1) Generate some interest for their event. Bob used that same technique with Band Aid, actually: he told Big Artist #1 that Big Artist #2 had already agreed, and told Big Artist #2 that Big Artist #1 had already agreed, when neither had actually signed
2) Test the water: in this case, they will be able to gauge interest in Geldof with the number rof inquiries and sign ups for the mailing list. If no one asks for more info, they might decide not to sign him. Again "Team Bob" is using this technique with the regional maling lists: if 5 people sign up for the North-American list, I doubt they will go forward with some NA gigs, but if 5000 sign up, they might reconsider...
My daughter will be having her 22nd birthday around that time and I was going to fly over from Sydney and take her... it's cheaper than going to Byron...
Might be from Melbourne too. If you book ahead you can get a flight for about $69/70 AUD then pay about $153 return to NZ - plus the concert ticket whatever he charges for that..
If you do straight thru connect from Syd it will be about 4 hrs - same as going to Perth or Darwin Julia.
They don't mention an NZ list - but we're used to being ignored because we're so small and insignificant... Even if we are a lot of Irish/Scott/Welsh Celt decendents, Maori mix and play more B Geldof songs on prime time main stream radio than anywhere else I've been.

Which, of course, is complete nonsense. In 3 years of hanging around this site, I've only known of a couple of fellow Australians (who have come and gone). Obviously the potential size of an Australian audience is going to be a tad larger than is reflected in the email list.
FGS, of all the people in the 2002 (Melbourne) audience, I would hazard a guess that no-one, including yours truly, even knew about www.bobgeldof.info.
Email lists as an indication of interest - bollocks.
The scary thing is that it could be going on ...

Couldn't agree more. After all, it was in NZ that I was introduced to The Rats, through hearing 'Mondays' - way before it hit the airwaves in Oz. Anything but insignificant
