Not really a comment on the Rats performance, but what a fantastic reception for the Boomtown Rats at Chagstock. Total crowd appreciation and engagement, full of people who seemed to know all the album tracks as well as the singles, young, middle aged and 'old'. This is exactly the sort of rock and roll interaction you wish for, the band feeding off the crowd and vice versa.
Before doing Having My Picture Taken Geldof ordered everyone to take our their phones to get a picture, and looking around there must have been at least a thousand phones flashing in the night sky. Bloodly hell not long ago the idea of being trampled underfoot at a Boomtown Rats gig would have seemed fanciful, now, with Cork and Devon it's the norm!
Might have been a family oriented festival, but looking at the Rats audience, most of them were there to see the band, and were proper music fans. Also noticed there is very little lull in the Rats set, or not time when the band is marking time. Just too many good songs that seem to excite the audience, so the gig to me seemed to keep up a very high 'emotional tempo', the crowd never losing interest.
To be honest in my wildest dreams I never expected the Rats to get such a fantastic reception. Whatever about forums and Facebook etc it seems there are lots of fans out there who just turn up and show their appreciation. When Geldof said (for the band) something like 'were honestly humbled', you know he meant it.
...Chagstock had clearly worked its magic on Bob who said of the bands comeback: Its really gratifying and a little overwhelming. Its the oddest thing to see 14-year-olds leaping around singing your songs that were released when they werent even born!
They were amazing! Managed to get to front of stage and stayed there! Amazing energy, loved it! First saw the Rats in 1980 and still have all that amazing energy!!!!
