After the dust settled on the 90s Britpop phenomenon, one song stood head and shoulders above all others penned at the time...

That song was Common People, and it was written by Sheffield anti-popstar Jarvis Cocker.

Pulp fans may also be surprised when producer Chris Thomas deconstructs the master recording and suggests the song was partly inspired by ELO's Mr. Blue Sky!


Bringing the story right up to date, Franz Ferdinand and The Kaiser Chiefs talk about the influence of the track on their sound.

Finally, Jarvis talks about the future for Pulp and how the band's biggest hit affected him personally.

that was a really good show.they tried to find out who it had been about but despite research jarvis wouldn't say whether they were right.it was really good tho.i'd never een the clip from headlining glastonbury before.that looked awesome.the entire crowd pogoing awesome

This is quite a interesting little series they are doing on BBC Three.  Pouges' Fairytale of New York then Pulp's Common People. 


Who knows, maybe if the BBC were lobbied. they may do a show on I Don't Like Mondays.  Certainly an interesting story in that song, and if they had the tapes of the original discarded versions.....

I'm sure that the Pistols will be included.  Personally, I think Anarchy in the UK would be a better story (and it's a better song).   Of course, Chris Thomas produced Pulp and the Sex Pistols. Not to mention Elton John and Paul McCartney

yeah anarchy is a much better song.there better not be any elton on there.there'll probably be some beatles somewhere
