Boomtown Rats 2013 Merchandise

At the gigs in Cork and Chagstock in Devon, the only merchandise on sale was t shirts. I think if you want to purchase any more interesting items you would need to go on ebay for buttons, badges etc.

The latter can still be ordered

I'm hoping there are better official shirts available. I suppose those who go to Dublin will find out first, but it's too late for a forum exclusive design this time around, just wear the old ones.

Don't know who the tour manager is nowadays, but it is probable that most of the visitors are 45+, a pocket full of money and very eager to buy some new stuff and buy some nostalgia (although Bob says it's not about nostalgia, I think for most of the fans it's all about nostalgia). I went to The Who - Quadrophenia concert last summer in Amsterdam (awesome awesome awesome performance by the way) and there was a large merchandise stand at The Ziggo Dome. Let's say 5000 people (one third of all visitors) bought something there for about 50,-. Ka- Ching!!! OK, there will be no 15.000 people at a BTR gig, but enough to make some new merchandise stuff profitable I guess. And no stupid mugs please... disbelief

Sadly I know him by reputation. He is prone to slinging mud for no good reason, but that's another story.

I rarely ever buy T-Shirts at gigs. I have got a couple in recent years for Pulp at Albert Hall and a more generic Happy Mondays one, but those aside, I haven't. Happy Mondays did sell a live recording of their Brixton date which I bought, but I can't think of any merchandise I would buy. If the T-Shirts were interesting, possibly, but I doubt I'd get a programme or anything else. I reckon they should sell inflatable bananas, but given my solitary one last time around, I'm not sure there's a big market for them.

I'd stump up for a decent tour t-shirt with dates down the back, provided it's proper print job and not just iron on transfer stuff. I always feel the latter look and feel 'home made'.

Sadly, as alluded to earlier, with majority of punters 45+ I don't think demand for anything will be huge, so I can't see the outlay on pins/hats/scarves etc etc being justified as sales won't cover costs.

For me, the minority of people willing to show colours will either dig out old t-shirts (of which maybe 10% will fit) or don some of the more recent 'unofficial' offerings picked up online. Will also give those long buried badges an airing, but I just don't foresee queues for new 'merch' or even programmes. Ticket stubs will serve as souvenirs, plus photos from the hundreds of phones etc held aloft. 75% of crowd prob never had a t-shirt and never will.

I'm happy to hire out a V Deep and/or ITLG tour t-shirt by the way, both labelled 'large' although perhaps that should be 'libelled' as neither would swamp a 9 year old to my mind.

Did we all wear ridiculously tight t-shirts late 70s early 80s???

They had T Shirts in Cork, but I wasn't that impressed by them. They did look ironed on. Maybe the tour shirt will be better, as they have a lot of dates to sell them rather than just one night.

I'll be wearing an old unofficial offering. They look far better IMHO, but then I am very biased! I did consider an update, but I couldn't come up with anything very interesting.

I struggle to remember what I wore back then. I think T shirts were a bit more snug, and added to that I only weighed about two thirds of what I am now. I do have a Slade T Shirt from 1982, I should see how that fits my son, as it would be more representative that putting it on me.

I had a strange dream about Rats merchandise the other day.

I was at an event (don't know what) and helping out with something (don't know what). There were piles of tshirts and loads of badges all going for free (as if). I had first dibs and selected 2 t shirts after some deliberation and a couple of badges. The dream skipped on and I'd come back from somewhere (I don't know where) and all the merchandise had gone, including mine. End of dream. What was that about? Didn't even hear a note of a song in it!

I think you (we!) are just more fat now actually! Too many beers and good food over the past 3 decades - obviously takes its toll eventually ...

I had a dream a few weeks back that the Sex Pistols were playing a live gig at HMV in Dublin. A huge crowd had gathered outside and inside HMV, and I was stood inside thinking I couldn't really be bothered to see the Pistols. In the dream I walked out of HMV and remember thinking the only band I could be bothered to see was the Rats smile .

Then one of the 'Pistols' passed me later. He was a young guy who had been drafted in and was not in the original band. confuse

Pretty sure the usual entrepreneurs will be outside Vicar Street with shirts.

I was planning to get The Damned and Kasabian, but couldn't find a third. Well not unless I wanted the Rats again. And then when I checked this morning, they were all full price.

Have finally started to listen to it, and it's amazing how different it is recorded to my memory of the gig. The only thing I really remember so far is Geldof getting the lyrics wrong.

Close as You'll Ever Be sounded pretty ropey, but then having realised I was on the wrong disc, I went back to the first and Eva Braun, Clockwork and Neon Heart sound superb. Very well mixed, the bass really comes through, so much more than I have heard on live recordings before. Simon's drumming is absolutely peerless. Tube journey not long enough to listen to much more.

I wasn't moaning, just making an observation smile OK I was a teeny bit miffed, just that I always fall for the buy it now otherwise you might never get the chance again routine! No wonder I never have any money hmm

Maybe it will be reduced again in the January sales ...

Maybe I might even get round to listening to it in full some day - will have to go on longer car journeys I guess ..

I might feel better actually if they raised the price to even more than I paid, but maybe I shouldn't suggest that as that would be really mean of me and it is Christmas ... Bah, humbug!

Ha ham I'm the same as you Lisa. In a rush to buy in case I don't get one and then find I could have got it much cheaper, had I been a little more patient :-/. I'm particularly bad with Rats stuff.

I tend towards the last minute possible camp. On the whole, it is to my benefit.

When I got tickets for a Geldof gig two days before it took place I ended up with front row seats. But the one time I did something way in advance (my flight to/from Dublin), I ended up not going.

Should have stuck to my original philosophy.

I bought some presents in advance of yule, but only when I can return them up to mid January. I have bought and returned the same tablet three times after price drops. Might even do it again next week!
