And as I'm not overly keen on last 2 albums, can I have some bonus tracks from the first 4 (as it's just so hard to pick only 2 from these!): Close As You'll Ever Be, Howard Hughes, Having My Picture Taken and Hurt Hurts? Thanks!
Quite! Although something of a divergence when it comes to ITLG. I recall in Rank the Singles, we have a different relative view of Dave (which I am looking forward to becoming in 10 posts or so time!) so it's odd how most of the tracks on that album grab us more differently than others. Having said that, similar view on A Hold of Me which I know works for Noel, but which I struggle with and remember being surprised at, when selected as the 4th single from ITLG. I think it would have struggled as the first lift, never mind the 4th.
Drag me Down was the obvious first lift from ITLG for me.
I think ITLG is the one album for me that doesn't polarise so much. First 2 had either excellent or VG (with possible exception of Can't Stop, which I'd class 'good' )
Surfacing and Mondo Bongo ranged from excellent to distinctly average in places, whilst V Deep went from (almost) sublime to ridiculous.
ITLG was a solid set of VG/Good, so my choices from that are marginal. Wouldn't disagree that the 4 singles are the strongest, and in the VG camp, and with hindsight would agree Drag Me Down may have captured public slightly more effectively than Tonight, but only because it's more immediate. Overall I think I now prefer Tonight.
Hard Times and Another Sad Story are both good tracks, but there are elements of Over and Over plus Lucky that just 'get' to me better. Even found the JFK line coming back to me time and again on Friday, 50 years on.
Would be dull if every one of us had the same views on every track though, and I've certainly reappraised more than one song through comments on the various threads down the years.
There's a great interview out there with Bob from early '85 (Metro Radio I think) where he says Over Again was nearly canned as he couldn't get it to sound right but Simon persevered with Pete to get it so. He mentions A Hold of Me as being atmospheric and like Million Years. I'll try and link to it if anyone's interested although someone may have beaten me to it. Richard Duncan previously of Beacon Radio interviewed and did so well as he was a fan of theirs and you can tell Bob appreciates he is not with a robotic ILR airhead.
An icicle in the sun is least popular from album 6 so far. I would think that's about right, never really had much time for that or Lucky, although slightly prefer the latter.
