I should qualify that. IF (a big IF) the other acts do their better stuff, including the wee screechy potato head, then it may be OK, but I don't intend to find out.

Regarding the rats line up Will this be Geldof Pete Simon and Gary ? If it is I just can not get this into my head as to why they would play this after such a very good come back tour

Yep, the fab four. They are the headliners. I understand the motivation as they may find a wider audience and potentially do bigger dates in their own right come the autumn.

Sometimes I think being second/third on the bill can work better than being headliners. Primal Scream and Elvis Costello had the benefit of people staking their place for the Stones at Glastonbury last year with bigger audiences than they could have expected headlining a smaller festival. I may be wrong, but the effect of the high profile Isle of Wight date will probably result in selling more tickets in the autumn than headlining these smaller festivals.

A big festival (Reading/Leeds/Glastonbury/V/Hyde Park) should be on the itinerary, and they could get lucky and get promoted up the bill like Ray Davies did last summer thanks to Elton's appendix (or was it the poor ticket sales, mmmm) and play to a big crowd.

Just wish Butlins did a day pass, but as I thought, the prospect of an autumn weekend in Skegness for the family went down like a helium balloon.

Rewind South only acts worth seeing are The Boomtown Rats and Hugh Cornwell- the rest seems like an unneccessary trip back to the decade that taste forgot. The Scottish Rewind isn't much better. The Rats, Marc Almond and The Selector are the only ones worth bothering with.

Man at theTop is right is a way. The Rats sold out, more or less, all their venues in the reunion tour. Not sure if headlining these eighties festivals is really a step up. Geldof was talking about not doing it out of nostaliga. These eighties festivals just seem so cheesy and nostalgia driven, I'll wait and see if anything better comes along. I suspect the vast majority of the audience will be just run of the mill eighties pop fans, who just go for the line up as a whole, taking the whole package rather than particularly caring about who is topping the bill.

Hugh Cornwell, Marc Almond, and The Selector have always had a continuing fan base and probably don't need to appear at festivals like these.

They sure have! (apologies for removing the context, but that's how I read it at first)

This is purely about nostalgia. I'm not against a themed festival, but I don't see The Rats as an eighties band. Hugh Cornwall aside (I'd rather see The Stranglers as is, but that's beside the point) none are really contemporaries. If you consider Banana Republic to be the last bonafide hit, that was out before most of these acts had a record deal.

I agree most festival attendees don't care that much about the individual acts, but will attend based on a theme. Wheras I did seriously consider Chagstock and Isle of Wight last year, the only festival that has any appeal this time around is the Butlins one. The Thomson Twin/Howard Jones/Spandau/Hall & Oates listener will be off before the Rats get near the stage. Well, maybe they'll probably hang around until Mondays.

I've no idea yet which ones I'm gonna go to. It's likely they will play in Ireland, but as far as I know we don't have many, if any, cheesy eightes festivals. Some of the locations are interesting like Grassington, or Whitehaven (with nuclear power plant in background) and these have caugth my eye, rather than the actual line ups.

Even though Perth is just up the road from me, I am not paying £60 for that **** line up. Really fancy Whitehaven, just rats and 2 support. These should be on sale tomorrow as well.Hotels might be a problem.

Would obviously rather see just the Rats at their own gig, but having said that, would love to see some of the other bands given the chance, ie having spare cash! Agree that Rats don't really fit into eighties label, but still wouldn't knock some of the music around then. As I get older, I just like the opportunity of going out to see music that I wouldn't necessarily experience otherwise - I think it's called broadening your mind??

Then again I'd probably enjoy a holiday in the sun even more

Even more appealing at the moment with all the bad weather here - though who knows maybe the festivals will be warm and sunny too.

I experienced it first time around, and thought it was sh!te then. Maybe it is a bit narrow minded of me to not want to hear more of The Thompson Twins, Spandau Ballet et al, but if I never hear them again it would be too soon.

OK, but Hazel O'Connor is really good, and having "performed" True, Gold and a rendition of one of the Beautiful South's songs (ok can't remember which one) on Singstar a few years back, do quite like some of these oldies! Maybe not a long set of them, but a few of the faves would be good for nostalgia's sake - and must sound better than me yodelling after one too many vodkas

Spandau Ballet should be locked up in Spandau for crimes against music. True is the worst 'white soul' c*** ever written. Why does he find it hard to write the next line? Because he's no Bob Dylan or Bob Geldof. smile

I believe Rats have early and short slots at both these....don't quote me but maybe 30 mins at about 4pm. That's around £2 a minute! Right up there with the Stones if true smile

Wasn't really considering this, but I suppose the upside is you can leave before all the dross comes on.

But just 30 minutes!!! I fell I'm a somewhat dedicated fan, but the idea of spending the best part of a day travelling to and from Henley (or anywhere really) for a 30 minute set with pretty much nothing else to watch is a total no no for me.

Just wish they'd announce an Irish date, preferably in the tent like last summer. Last year's festival dates were fewer but more interesting.

I've not been to southern Ireland for some years and quite fancy a trip to Cork or Dublin, so it'd be great if the Rats would return there. I also hear Cork is a lovely place and that Fred were a great support act and that I must check out their Skyscraper track soonest.
