Can there realistically be much prospect of any Rats' dates going ahead in the light of Bob's tragic loss?

I think in the light of what has happened, most of us regular posters are just allowing some time to pass before even thinking about Bob performing with the Rats during the summer. Even talking about music seems a bit frivolous, and puts everything into perspective.

If the gigs don't go ahead then it is totally understandable. On the other hand music, and getting back to work might be what Bob thinks is best. He will certainly have mass support from any audiences that attend his, or The Rats concerts.

It's an unknown at present, but when you consider that someone like Wilko Johnson is pretty much dying as he tours, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rats do play.  Sex Age & Death was recorded in the aftermath of Paula Yates's death with Pete Briquette's encouragement.  Geldof would get a great reception if they do play.

I have not experienced the death of one of my children, so I can't truly understand how anyone would feel, but Geldof will re-emerge in the public eye at some point.

I don't wish to appear callous, as I never knew Peaches except via the mass media, but I don't really have a problem discussing music or anything.

I think it is right to respect her passing, but really it is her family and friends who are impacted by this and its best to leave them to grieve in whatever way they choose.

I don't suppose Bob knows right now what he'll want to do. Couldn't really second guess. He has found performing cathartic before, but this is something new.

As the first date is only a month away, they will have to make a decision one way or another in the next fortnight or so.  As most of the dates are festivals it won't be a problem bumping acts up the bill.

Sorry Noel but you are being completely disingenuous.  I am basically an honest person and so I will tell you that Bob performing with the Rats was one of the first things to go through my head on the day his daughter's death was announced. I have privately communicated with 2 other fairly regular posters to this forum and they thought about it too in similar fashion.  I think you'd be odd not to frankly.

None of that takes away the awfulness of what has happened;  you'd have to be without feeling not to ache for her children especially. Her husband, sisters and Bob must feel in despair. I have not lost offspring so cannot empathise,  only sympathise.

However,  it is holier than thou of you to place yourself and other posters into a vicarious grief community and then speak for all of them by opining that none of you have 'even thought' of Bob performing and whether it will be affected. I count myself as a regular poster and at least left it til after the funeral before putting the thought out there. I'm sorry I couldn't be so pure in word and thought and deed as you.

Well I think everyone was sensitive over not saying the wrong thing ... and if we are to be honest everybody was wondering the same (selfish) thing, despite having every sympathy with what had happened. I was extremely conscious that I shouldn't dare mention Guilfest - despite having banged on about it endlessly before the tragic event!

I think it boils down to our very British/Western(?) reserve about death which I guess is quite a taboo subject in many ways and most people avoid talking about it. People are so afraid of saying the wrong thing but there is rarely a right thing to say - we know how we feel but struggle to express it in words. I remember when my eldest son had to have a heart op at the tender age of 3 that the real "what if" scenario was always avoided in any conversation. Only one friend whose child had had a series of ops - fortunately all successful - knew what to say when I asked her how you say goodbye prior to the op. Her simple answer was you don't say goodbye, you just say see you later. Still makes me cry but just so right. And glad that my story had a happy ending after all - but painfully aware that not everybody is so lucky. And sadly I do still struggle to say the right thing ...

Very nicely said, Lisa. So glad you have a happy ending to your story.

It's a shame if we have a go at each other over this. As ArrGee says a decision will be made in about 2 weeks or so. In the meantime we are in a state of limbo, that just is.

Like you, one of the first things I thought about was how it would affect the summer dates.  To be brutally honest, that's the only impact Peaches' death has on me.  I have never understood public grief as I don't know the people concerned.    Even with people I admire such as Lou Reed, I can't say I gave it much thought other than listening to a couple of his records.

I suppose it comes down to the difference between what people say in private and in public.  A forum is public, so people are a little more guarded in case what they write is seen as callous.

Personally, I think the Rats will play.  It is possible that Pete Barton or Bob Bradley could fill in until Geldof decides he is ready to perform.

I changed the title and moved the topic to the main Rats forum as it has nothing to do with Glastonbury anymore.

Well said everyone. I knew I was not alone,  yet somehow (whether intended or not) Noel pigeon-holed me as a callous,  selfish, music-above-all-else type,  out of step with him and his righteous friends who've been around longer than me. I thought waiting til the funeral was over struck the balance on this re sensitivity and respect as regards the forum.

I am sad about the death of Peaches and it would be totally understandable if Bob cannot perform. But I knew her not,  apart from what the media presented to me of her. Naturally,  as her father leads my all time favourite pop group,  I am going to wonder how things would be affected. You'd have to be a saint not to.

As Bob would say, 'Spare me'.

Mark you're a very articulate and passionate fan- that's always been obvious to me. So you have my total respect.(which is the sincere smiley?). I'm just a fan, not some 'insider' or some  sanctimonious high moral grounder (Full time Atheist really)smile Didn't really mean to speak for others and sometimes I just write and realize what I say can be misconstrued and sometimes I 'fire off' before I even know what  I mean.

Yes, of course I though about the affect of PG's death on my summer, when I had planned to go to a few of the  Rats gigs in England. I wondered about the gigs going ahead, if anyone had purchased tickets already and the uncertainty about hotels, and all that logistical stuff going to gigs entails.I haven't even bought any tickets yet, and the Cheltenham gig is only about 5 weeks away. So it's all up in the air as they say.

Like ArrGee and some others I think there  is a good possibility of the concerts going ahead, in that Geldof turns to music in times of crisis and pain. I'm sure he will make his intentions known soon, as contracts and ticket sales for the gigs have to be seen to and all that sorted out.

Sometimes 'public grief' is really people just just showing empathy. There can be a thin line between those we actually know in real life who die, and 'celebrity' deaths, where we, by media proxy,as it were, feel we know them, or wish to make our feelings of sympathy to the family known. It's certainly a phenomenon that is aided by social media and instant communication ie the need or desire to comment publicly on deaths of well known people.

Of course the paradox of a great musician dying is that emotionally we may be closer to his or her world view that a person we actually know, who dies, in real life.

Has Peaches not been a Geldof, her death would have passed me by totally unnoticed.   I don't really know what she did, she seemed to be in the red tops and the celeb mags, but aside from a very broad general impression I don't have the feeling that I knew her.

I saw Bob play a couple of gigs in Belgium a few years ago, one was 3 days after his sister died and the other on the day of her funeral. He flew back for the gig. And these only 3 weeks after his father's funeral. I can tell you, they were 2 of the best I have seen and his band were superb. As Jules says, I don't think he will even be looking that far ahead at the moment. Whatever he chooses he will get our full support. I have a feeling the early ones might go, but wait and see.

In my opinion. I think Bob will go ahead with this. At the end of the day life does go on. I have lost loved one's. I do know what he is going through. But just think about this one, when someone in your home dies work only gives you 5 days off. Then you have to go back and get on with things. Like many other's in my place you do just get on with it. And I do not mean this in a bad way (RIP little one) And god bless Bob and his family.

5 days off is what you'd get where I work too,  so it's a good point.

Noel, your post landed badly with me,  as the first to air the big question, yet clearly you had thought about it (ironically in more detail than I had re hotels etc) as well as probably everyone else, if they're brutally frank. Just odd you declared you hadn't thought of it and included everyone else in such virtuous, but unrealistic behaviour!

Anyway,  I'm nowhere as passionate a fan as Suss or others and all posters here are articulate. We're Geldof fans after all, and the Rats music was always an intellectual level above others, fuelled by Geldof's superlative songwriting. If we get another chance to hear it in the summer of 2014 then great.  If not,  it'd be understandable.

I better hang onto that room in Tring. Now I just have to decide between the Rats and the Libertines/Pogues on the same weekend...

Turns out to be a very easy decision after seeing the ticket prices.  Over £80 to get near the stage unless I turn up early and pi$$ where I stand and even then it's over £60.

Tring, here I come!

GENERAL ADMSSION £61.05 (£55.00) Transaction fee applicable *

- General Admission entry through the main gate - Access to an extensive range of bars, food traders and toilets in the main arena - Opportunity to stand directly in front of the Great Oak Stage if you are early enough

PREMIUM VIEW £82.50 (£75.00) Transaction fee applicable *

- Dedicated entrance for Premium View customers - Entry to the event up to 30 minutes before the gates open to General Admission customers - Access to an extensive range of bars, food traders and toilets in the main arena - Exclusive premium standing viewing area to watch Great Oak Stage performances, allowing you to leave and return as you wish

Are you buying a ticket? And are you basing it on the 'reliability' of the Irish Sun .

I've already got my ticket, anyway.

http://www.thesun.ie/irishsol/homepage/showbiz/5589368/Show-goes-on-for-brave-Bob-Geldof-will-tour-with-Rats.html

GRIEVING Bob Geldof is to go ahead with a string of summer festival appearances with the Boomtown Rats.

The Live Aid legend has told fellow band members he feels the best way he can cope with the tragic passing of daughter Peaches, 25, is to go back on the road.

I'll turn up and buy one on the day.   The Friday wasn't sold out last year, and I don't think it's likely to this time around.

But if it is raining, I'm not going.

They list the Boomtownn Rats here: www.plymouthvolksfest.co.uk/main-stage.html

Certain it's not BG solo. Really not sure why that poster says so.

That's just a local poster for Pymouth or rather Plumpton where the venue is. Might be a case of too many letters in the name Boomtown Rats. All the other acts have a few less. I did count them.smile

For me  going to the gigs always or usually involves a flight and booking a hotel, and sometimes/often catching a train. Not that I'm complaining because I  enjoy all this and can (just about) afford it.smile Lots of the others have to book hotels and  sometimes flights  and trains too- it's not just me, of course. Even ArrGee has to check his 'is this inside or outside  the M25?' Appsmile

Mark I was not intending to be taken literally when I said no one had 'even thought about' the  situation with upcoming gigs. It was more my attempt to just say people would be naturally reluctant to speculate publicly in an open forum about gigs going ahead so soon after the death of PG.

I've done four outside the M25 (Dublin, Cork, Cambridge, Polo Club).  And Tring would be the fifth.

I think we've exhausted this one now Noel. Plus, it's probably boring for everyone else. Above, you're again indicating I raised the subject prematurely, so send me any further comments by PM, but I did wait til the funeral had passed and,  as is clear,  only posted a query that everyone else had been thinking about anyway.

I will accept being struck off the forum if the powers that be think I was out of order with my post of 1.13pm on 23.04.14 but I would miss it immensely and that includes the vast majority of your posts Noel. There's far far more that unites us than divides us. PM me if you want us to continue focusing on the latter.

No one is getting struck off the forum except for the kitchen guys. Amazed everyone was so restrained and pussyfooting after Peaches death, especially around the issue of the summer dates.  I think I was the only one posting about anything. Within reason you can write about whatever you fcuking like on here.

Not been on for a while myself but can honestly say it was more to do with lack of Rats 'news' than the sad events.

May be wrong but I think we possibly just hit a natural lull between last tour and next gigs, so little to discuss on the 'live' front, and most people are long term posters so there's also very little undiscussed on the merits or otherwise of the catalogue.

I still appreciate the links to fresh youtube or articles etc etc, and the warnings about old TOTP and so on (thanks to Mark in particular for those), so not suggesting the forum is waning, merely that new topics are a bit limited lately.

Clearly we're all sensible and sensitive enough not to sensationalise the tragic story, or even speculate, which was/is good to see, but I have to agree it would be unnatural not to have cast a thought in direction of gigs likelihood. The main thing is I like to think no-one I know from here would fee especially aggrieved if a date or all were canned given the circumstances. It's not as if the band owe us anything after 35 years of pleasure.

As for some earlier comment about being more passionate, have to argue I don't see it that way. I might make the effort to get to gigs, but I'm extremely lucky to have the funds and freedom to do so. Others probably play the songs far more, or spend on the 'complete' collection and rarities, or read up every article etc, or even run fan pages or social media. Now that's passionate, not to mention altruistic. Some big big fans don't even post on here, but can't question their devotion.

Like Mark, I'm very grateful for this board, and the fact it's generally intelligent and reasoned debate or opinion, plus a great place to keep in touch with the kitchen market. I hope the gigs go ahead, for obvious reasons, but not least so we'll have some fresh items to discuss. To kick off, I'd love to hear some different tracks, especially some of the second album not yet aired since regroup, but suspect festival gigs are nailed on hits packages. Be good if Whitehaven/Jersey permitted the odd indulgence though.

Looking forward to catching up in person with many, on positive assumption the show will go on.

I would like to see a new setlist for this year. Wonder what they'll do? Would also like to see Bob in a new suit, but shopping might not be on his list of priorities. Then again, it might be a distraction or something to try to distract and focus on music.

I'd like to see him wear something that looks good for the first time since 1978.  Rot set in when he performed Rat Trap on ToTP.  What the fcuk was with the medals, the brooch and the gold braid?    Prior to that, he looked pretty good.

I really hope the fcuk off snake skin suit and even worse the see thru black shirt have been incinerated.

The reason behind the medals. one 1st time an Irish band had done so in the English charts So he said it was the 1st time he felt being proud to be Irish and the medals reflexed that. And you are all right about the suit Regarding the shirt keep it just make sure you can not see through it Ha ha

Sadly it wasn't.  Diane by The Bachelors holds that dubious distinction.

But no one over forty should wear a see thru shirt.  Especially a bloke.  Geldof could fill a B cup with his boobies...

I thought Diane reached number 1 on the Record Retailers chart but not on the official chart etc used by the BBC?

Looks pretty official to me.

This chart was from before I was born, yet I know a large number of the songs on it and there are some bonefide classics such as Baby I Love You and Nadine. The only songs I know in the current top 40 are Happy and Magic. Waves by Mr. Probz is number one at the moment. Maybe kids born next week will look back on it with affection in fifty years time....

Wrong? How am I fcuking wrong? They are Irish, they play guitar bass keyboards harmonica (which I was told at the roundhouse is a proper instrument with lots of notes) and they sing songs. If they ain't a fcuking band then neither are the boomtown rats.

Has Peaches not been a Geldof, her death would have passed me by totally unnoticed.   I don't really know what she did, she seemed to be in the red tops and the celeb mags, but aside from a very broad general impression I don't have the feeling that I knew her.

Today the inquest details of PG's death is the most read story on the BBC News website, as was her death and funeral a few weeks back. I just put this out there as a gauge of  the public's interest in this sad story. It certainly was/is big news though I suspect of the transient kind.

Yes, hopefully people will move on in a day or 2. The Geldofs and Cohens don't need all this.

I'm sure it is big news, but if it was someone else who had frequently appeared in the red tops/celeb mags I doubt it would register with me.   As an example, I know Mick Jagger's girlfriend died recently, but off the top of my head, I couldn't tell you her name.   Maybe lots of people are reading about it, but I'm sure they all read Hello as well.
