Battle of the 'Plastic Paddies' or Birmingham vs London.Any votes on which is the better band. I go for Dexys- their early albums were brilliant ,and the later ones a bit 'eccentric' to say the least.Just a quick survey out of curiosity, rather than going into detail. I think my favourite Dexys song is There There My Dear a great single from about 1980. Was never too into The Pogues Irish rebellion and alcohol combo, though that's probably simplifying their music a bit. Dexys had a strange take on music ie Celtic soul, but it worked and kevin Rowland was always a unique genious. Read an inteview with him recently when he said he did not know what he had been doing for the last twenty years.
Just thought of this question as DMR will be playing The Roundhouse in London on 27 June. Unfortunately any money I have will be spent on The Rats .
Dexy's for me. First two albums (searching for Young Soul Rebels and Too-Rye-Ay) are superb. Can't say I heard any after those. Only Pogues record I have is the the Very Best of, and I doubt I listened to it more than once.
I only know a few Dexys songs (and I like them all!). I have two Pogues albums and they are both brilliant, especially If I Should Fall From Grace With God - I never get bored listening to that. It's like a never ending, and particularly drunken, party. It is also an absolute triumph that someone who looked and sounded like Shane McGowen could possibly be so successful. Nowadays it seems you have to be nice to look at to get anywhere.

Another great band a bit like Dexys is The Band of Holy Joy. Their great album from the late eighties on Rough Trade was Manic, Magic, Majestic.

Pogues for me. Got first Dexy's album and did buy Come on Eileen the day after I heard it, but always found them a bit too earnest, bordering on pretentious at times.
Pogues however combined great lyrics/music with a bit more humour, and live were sensational (but never saw Dexy's perform I concede).
Pogues also for me helped fill a void left at demise of Rats. Paddy's day at Hammersmith Palais '86 is right up there in my favourite ever gigs.
Pogues by a wide margin, enjoy a few Dexy's tracks but can't get very excited about them. Less studio polish and much stronger/wittier lyrics suits me fine. Also some top level swearing, which I'm all for.
Even the albums from Spider's reign, which is quite different, would rank pretty highly, certainly higher than Dexys.
December's haven't been quite the same since they've stopped touring, neither they or the crowds they attract ever disappoint, GMex in 2007 almost certainly top of my gig list. Shame they stopped, really, as Shane was starting to get it together again a bit in the last year or so. But it'd be a bit sad to see them replace Phil Chevron if they did start up again.

Just listening to Too-Rye-Ay Special Edition with an extra live CD with BBC sessions. There is a superb version of Respect live at Shaftesbury Avenue on it. Shame I never saw them back in the day.

Kevin Rowland was brought up in Wolverhampton, where I hail from, and is very underrated, especially with his album, My Beauty. Although covers, he sings them with such emotion.
