Just wondered if people had any thoughts. I think 'Dave' might come out.

I'm hoping for a change. Yes, I don't think Dave will be on it somehow. I can't seem them doing anything much from later albums though?? Blind Date, Watch out for the Normal People???

I think it will be mostly the same. I do think 'Drag Me Down' and 'Dave' though may feature. Especially as Drag Me Down was played at Live Aid and might be better known to people than it's original chart placement would suggest.

It's hard to see any 'new' old tracks being played. Dave is a song about heroin addiction so might be way too close to the bone- though I'd love them to play it. Personally I'd like them to  do Never In A Million Years and I Can Make It If You Can. They are not going to play any of the great B sides no matter how much I/we might like them to. I think Blind Date is one other song that comes to mind, that I'd like to hear live.

You have to realize that the vast majority will want to hear the hits, and better known songs. It's pretty much to same for any popular band. My 'trick' last year was to listen to the albums, and then just knowing I would be seeing these heroes in the flesh I was less concerned about them doing my Ipod wishlist.

Who knows there may be some new songs. Perhaps Bob will busy himself with recording a new Rats album. Pete Briquttes suggestion of later in the year Rats gig in London might mean they will try something new, rather than just continue with  the same show.

I would like them to drop The Boomtown Rats!  But it seems to be their final encore to clear the hall.

They may shuffle the songs a bit like they did on last tour, but I strongly suspect sets very like Isle of Wight for festivals.  The only "new" song they might play would be Living in an Island, as it was on printed on set lists but never played.

It would be good to hear something off the last two albums, as long as it's not Charmed Lives.

Do you think they will do a shorter setlist? They are headlining at most of these shows so you would think a full set would be expected?

Not sure which ones they are headlining, but for the ones they are they will probably do at least an hour, maybe 90 minutes tops.   I think a full set is 100 minutes, so I'd expect it's more likely some songs will be dropped rather than added.

In my opinion i think they got the balance right with the songs last time round. So why change something that works. Someone once said that the Rats had been pissed of singing mondays But sure they more or less sang the same songs over the years of giging Rat trap and the rest got played everytime they giged

Thinks this hits nail on the head. Can't personally see anything from last 2 albums being added, partly as earlier stuff is better known, and partly because it's more guitar based. Perhaps if they were playing 90 minute sets we'd see some variety from last tour, but short festival sets must surely be first 9 singles plus Joey, Neon Heart and maybe When The Night Comes or Close As You'll Ever Be if time allows. Not convinced The Boomtown Rats will feature - if encores possible at all there must surely be singles that take priority in reduced timeframes. May be wrong though...

Even for the non-festival or smaller line up gigs (Whitehaven only now?) there's no venue that's in a town tour went to, so a repeat of last autumn's set wouldn't necessarily disappoint a 'new' crowd.

Personally I'd love Living In an Island and/or Don't Believe What You Read to get an airing...maybe later in year or another time smile

I predict...

  • (I Never Loved) Eva Braun
  • Like Clockwork
  • Neon Heart
  • (She's Gonna) Do You In
  • Someone's Looking at You
  • Looking After No. 1
  • I Don't Like Mondays
  • Mary of the 4th Form/I Wanna Be Your Man/Boom Boom
  • She's So Modern
  • Rat Trap
  • Diamond Smiles
  • The Boomtown Rats

And if they have enough time add one of Joey, When The Night Comes or Banana Republic

Ok, I predict...

  • Like Clockwork
  • Neon Heart
  • Joey
  • Someone's Looking at You
  • Banana Republic
  • When The Wife Comes
  • I Don't Like Mondays
  • Looking After No. 1
  • Mary of the 4th Form/I Wanna Be Your Man/Boom Boom
  • She's So Modern
  • Rat Trap
  • Diamond Smiles (encore)

...as a festival set, and not much difference to tour set for anything over the hour, with The Boomtown Rats and maybe Close As You'll Ever Be sacrificed if needs must.

I'd be surprised if Eva Braun isn't the opening song.

I'd be delighted if it is....guess it might be swayed by whether they use the same background intro, with or without the video (most places I assume no video).

It's a fair shout though...well enough known and a good rouser. I was thinking more of what goes if times curtailed. It's a 5 minute track near enough....

Not much,  although would be good to hear the Elephants Graveyard reintroduced to complement the other stand out track from Mondo Bongo and remind people this was still a very good album that reached number 6.

Or as an alternative to your number 6 prediction: I Can Fake It If You Can?

Seems Suss has fallen victim to the perils of Autocorrect!

I think there's a website a mate showed me of these once.

Sorry to disappoint but was intentional, and credits to Scottie for sourcing one of these...

I much prefer Lisa's "I Can Fake It If You Can"

Any other orgasmic titles?

Crude but here goes....Hard times,  Keep it up, A hold of me... (add as appropriate), and then thinking of when I met the missus in 1999, Can't Stop.

When I think of us now.......Nothing Happened Today.

Mark, it was for the Italian gig with his own band. A joke by the band members I think, but kind of confirms the story that Bob and Jeanne are getting married. Sorry to say that the Rats are down for a 30 min slot at the Rewinds, but knowing Bob, he wont care if they go over. Remember IOW. Biggest chance of a full set will be Whitehaven. Only 3 acts and they are headlining. Still plenty tickets.

I told Bob I was going to Henley. He said do you realise that's only 40 mins? I think he was worried I was wasting my money. I reassured him that it's in my home county so I can't not go. If it's 40 mins, that's better than 30 though. Another couple of songs!!

He obviously didn't consider, that I might want to see other bands (whoever they are) .

Geldof has said and done all the right things since the Rats got back together, but more importantly he is sincere.  I thought it was good he said it was The Boomtown Rats and not Bob Geldof & The Boomtown Rats.  Very different tone to "Stop talking about The Boomtown Rats because guess what? It was 30 years ago."  back in 2011.

Nice video interview from Plymouth. Hints at doing it next year.

He did an interview with one of the Gloustershire local papers in which his publicist insisted they only talk about the Boomtown Rats and his music rather than any other topic unless Bob brings it up. This was a few weeks before Peaches death, and the interview was only published a little before the Cheltenham gig The 'remit' from Bobs PR was:

PLEASE can you confirm the interview will be about the Boomtown Rats and his music and there wont be any discussions about his family or Africa unless Bob himself raises it and brings into context?

As far as strict instructions from a PR go, they were about as clear and militant as they come.

Yet the more I thought about them, I felt confused.(Johnathan Whiley, Gloucestershire Echo)

Geldof seems far more affable because of it.  The Boomtown Rats are doing him good!   I seem to be referring to Razorlight a lot, but in terms of media, Johnny Borell's latest interview is more what I'd expect from Geldof...

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/may/29/razorlight-johnny-borrell-record-labels-scum

Even Jarvis c0cker seems to have been irked by the press.  I'd give you the link to the Time Out article but c0cker get whacked by the profanity filter. Google "Jarvis Time Out Pulp"

Only 1 week to go to Wolverhampton. Anyone any other ideas apart from what's been raised that could feature? We're getting good value from Bob and the boys atm and I think they will want to introduce a couple of blasts from the past so we don't feel we're watching a late night repeat.

Given they aired Kicks at the first set last night, it maybe a sign of things to come.
