Having seen on the facebook 'Kicks' was played- I am eager to learn what the other changes are and which songs were in each set

Kicks added in set 1. No Banana Republic. Set 2 neither of these. The rest as usual. So yes, we got Kicks. Sounded fabulous as ever, even more energy in set 2.

I forgot they didn't do Diamond Smiles in the 1st set, but did in the 2nd.

Clearly, there isn't going to be much change in the set list then. Was Geldof's in between song banter at Butlins any different from last year's tour? Or are we going be listening to the same craic aswell?

I'd be happy enough if they do Kicks and Never Bite The Hand That Feeds on one of the two shows I'm attending.  But suspect I'll get Diamond Smiles and Having My Picture Taken.  The Barton/Bradbury Rats did much the same set for five years and given the lack of rehearsal time, I don't expect too many changes.   Would be nice if Howard Hughes made a comeback which was in the earlier sets but seems to have been discarded.

Last year at Newcastle we got Never Bite the Hand That Feeds instead of Having My Picture Taken. Walking back to the car I overheard a geordie enthusing about the gig saying that they played everything he liked except Having My Picture Taken. Just goes to show you can never please everyone.

I had hoped for a few more changes than it looks like we'll get and I really don't want to hear the snakeskin suit story yet again.

I have heard Having My Picture Taken at every Geldof Rats gig bar Cork even going back to the seventies/eighties, but never heard Never Bite the Hand That Feeds live.  Kicks I have heard live back in the seventies albeit abridged between Rat Trap and Joey.

The snake skin suit story will return. confuse

I personally love the 2013 Rats set. and I also love Diamond Smiles. I would love to hear howard hughes, elephant's graveyard- i can make it if you can. Dave, a hold on me. I saw never bite the hands that feeds at Bournemouth last year. Cool to see but personally prefer picture

We're all a variation on a theme I suppose and as you may know,  I sit a bit to the right of Tonic for the Troops - not much mind. So I'd be happy with Picture,  Graveyard and feel positively cheated with no Diamond Smiles!

Maybe due to what, Diamond smiles is about. And in light of what happened to his child. I would say this would be hard for him to sing

They definitely did Diamond Smiles 2nd set. Thought they didn't during the 1st one, could be wrong. I'm doubting myself now. Maybe someone else remembers?

Jules, you were punching the air at each band name called out smile

That's probably the way to recall it, as the 'intro' song. Also, Pete did a bit of bass on his name first set, but just stood stage front with hands on hips second time round. Ringing any bells??

3 song encore early, just the two late on.

Also, I don't think band were expecting to go from Mondays to Mary in 2nd set. Garry looked a bit perplexed and Bob went into his 'give me a one' spiel, as he was (for me) obviously expecting to open up Close as You'll ever Be.

The extended sections in Do You In and Mary were both much reduced in 2nd set too.

I thought the first set was marginally the better, and Bob's banter post Do You In was very funny - could see he was enjoying toying with the crowd.

Fantastic weekend though. Great to see so many of this parish and that 'dodgy' Facebook equivalent wink

Thanks for organising the meetups as ever. Think I spent more time in that pub than in my bed blankstare

Suss is right, they definitely did Diamond Smiles in the first set.

Fantastic weekend BTW. Really good to meet you Jules and of course many others from this forum who gave Michelle & I such a warm welcome as newcomers.

Looking forward to meeting you all again soon, no doubt a few on Saturday!

Melv (& Michelle) (AKA M&M!)

Thanks for confirming that Melv, it all went into a mush in my head. Overwhelmed by so much Rats in one night.

It was lovely to meet you both too. Hopefully see you on Saturday.

Only for about 24 hours...then I'm Dory! smile

To answer original question:-

4pm - Eva Braun, Like Clockwork, Neon Heart, Do You In, pause for stand up routine wink, Someone's Looking At You, She's So Modern, Mondays, Close As You'll Ever Be, Mary, No 1, Rat Trap - encore Kicks, Diamond Smiles, The Boomtown Rats

10pm - as above but without Close As You'll Ever Be and Kicks, and far less 'recovery' time and jamming in Do You In and Mary.

Not sure what constitutes the usual set to date...2013 standalone gigs included all above except Kicks, with Joey, When The Night Comes and Banana Republic as staples, plus Howard Hughes and Elephant's Graveyard in warm ups and early shows, and then a toss up between Having My Picture Taken and Never Bite the Hand That Feeds in the encores. Shouldn't forget the White Light White Heat cameo at Bristol either. Have I missed any? The set at the Gate was IOW plus other try outs. Think that even included She Does It Right from memory.

Rewind sets were only the first 8 singles but I think (need to check that thread) The Boomtown Rats got squeezed in at Henley too.

So we effectively have a standalone 90 mins set, a festival "hour" set (where Close As You'll Ever Be is sometimes the sacrificial lamb along with Joey/WTNC/Banana), or a 40 mins greatest hits taster.

Looks like Kicks will feature somewhere from Saturday onwards. I'm sure there will be one or two other tweaks. Question is what would get dropped?? Eva Braun possibly? Hope not.

Diamond Smiles seems to be set aside as the introducing the band song so not sure that will go, plus it's a hit single.

Guess we'll find out soon enough...
