I'm going to Dublin for the first time. And wanted some advice of unmissable places of Rats history. I don't know the town. I am thrilled to be going to such a fantastic city.
Morans which is now a pub called O'Sheas on Talbot Street Bewley's in Grafton Street which has a blue plaque Blackrock College in Dun Laoghaire Whelan's where they played with Bob Bradbury Vicar Street where they played their last gig RDS Showground, Dublin where they played in 1986 (the original swansong) Leixlip Castle where they played a notable gig in 1981 Five Lamps - the junction of five streets - Portland Row, North Strand Road, Seville Place, Amiens Street and Killarney Street. Sandycove as name checked in Never Bite The Hand that Feeds Temple Bar - where Garrick bought his guitar and Irish Music Wall of Fame (though that may no longer be there) Baggot Street where the Rats played DIT Bolton Street where it all started about 39 years ago.
The meat factory has long gone and most likely the gasworks as well. There are plenty of Italian cafes, so just imagine Billy and Judy in one.

Thanks for your help.
Off the top of my head- Dun Laoghaire is where the Rats are really from. It is a seaport about 10 miles south of Dublin city. Nice in summertime as it's on the coast and fairly relaxed.Fairly well to do suburb far from tower blocks and inner city tension!
Blackrock College- Where Geldof went to school. Near Dun laoghaire/Dublin.
Bolton St College- Bolton St. Rats first gig Oct 1975.
Morans Hotel (now O Sheas Hotel, Talbot St) Scene of early Rats gigs in basement. This is where Joey allegedly hung out with the Rats.
Grafton St- Main 'posh' shopping street. Contains Bewleys Cafe, where Geldof and the Rats hung out. Also contains Captain Americas, a small restaurant where the Rats meet, and alleged had a big fight the night the called it a day.(courtesy of Geldof BP fallon radio interview 1986)
Ballsbridge- Scene of 70's abbatoir now posh hotel or apartments. South Dublin city, posh suburb.
I passed a barbers in Temple Bar the other week and saw that it had a list of famous customers, which included Bob Geldof.
To be honest the Rats are not that well honoured in Dublin. I think that's a good thing really.Otherwise it would all be a bit too cosy. That edgy distancing themselves from the city was what made them successful. I suspect it's a love hate thing. But their Dublin was largely of the late sixties into the mid seventies and of course the city is always changing. Politics and economics and time brings changes.

Leixlip is in county Kildare, and the gig was May 1980. But well done for coming up with a fairly comprehensive list.

Only just in Kildare and it isn't that far. Dun Laoghaire is almost as far from the centre. Nice day trip. Just go due east on the road to Galway. Probably a train there as well.
The irony for me is that I spent the best part of a year working in Dublin on and off and never went anywhere near most of these. Generally just commuted out to Park West from O'Connell Street every day. Best to avoid the shops at Christmas though, cos all they play is that Band Aid song...

That is very true. U2 on the other hand are everywhere. Well worth heading out on the bus when it's dark listening to the first couple of Rats albums on your iPod (or equivalent). For me it is the sound of the city.

East?
yes, east would put you deep in the Irish sea. I meant west.
