Only teasing...well aware I'm a johnny come lately, apart from at Dorking Halls which I just happened to be passing so I popped in yesterday.
Apparently standing can take 1100, with 280 seated upstairs I think they said. Start advertising it early new year, so little wonder I was an early buyer.

All thanks to Jules' notifications naturally
For a second I thought it was live at 'the Grand Hall Sussmilch',which sounds like an obscure German town.

Do the Germans really like the solo act? It's odd that the Rats barely venture outside mainland Britain. Also will be very interesting to see how Geldof records next. Solo or Rats.

This video might just answer your question.

Not really an answer. If the Rats played there'd probably be more looking for autographs.

Really? I'm not sure. Apart from Mondays and Banana Republic would they really have a fanbase enough to sell out club gigs. I doubt it. Geldof has played enough times in Germany over the years to suggest that the Germans do really like his solo act. Give him some credit.

The Rats had two big selling albums (Surfacing and Mondo Bongo) and a few hit singles off them (Banana Republic peaking at #3), whilst all the solo Geldof managed was to scrape into the top 20 with Indifference. Vegetarians of Love sold well, but that aside there isn't much evidence of substantial sales. Geldof played in the UK a lot up until 2010, but that didn't mean it was well attended.
It would be interesting to know what sort of audience in terms of numbers the Rats would get in Germany. The Barton Rats played a few dates there and went down well and attracted decent audiences for early slots at festivals http://boomtownrats.activeboard.com/t44080208/germany/
Didn't Banana reach no 1 in Deutschland because the Germans thought it was all about them? Like everything?
According to Geldof they reached #1, but in reality they peaked at #3. And according to Geldof he wrote Someone's Looking in 1980. The Fine Art of Surfacing was released in 1979 According to Geldof when they first played Mondays he read about Brenda Spencer in the English newspapers until later according to Geldof he wrote it in Atlanta
Geldof tells a good story and gives good copy but don't believe what you read nor hear
Pete told me that the Nitelife Thugs never existed. At no point were they called this.
At Maida Vale, Garry commented that was Geldof's versions of events regarding the formation of the band. It is only in recent years that I found out that Garry and Simon went way back and were essentially the core of the band. Johnnie was the most likely to have brought the two halves together, especially bringing in Pete & Gerry.
This is the 'Odes of Germany' moment he keeps having?
On a similar tack, although he's ok about his proper age now, there was the '3 year disparity' in his late 20s /early 30s caused by someone feeding the media a birth year of 1954.
Whenever you are about to have a snooze, he throws in a Rats song to wake you up. The Mary/Joey/Rat Trap sequence is absolutely top notch and stirs the audience enough to get them standing
Also good point made by MATT, don't think I've seen solo band since Rats reunion (can't have played many?), so might be a difficult listen. Beforehand had G&S playing songs properly, and BG singing them 'authentically'. Having seen the best combination again the Rats songs will be hard to accept. Perversely will probably enjoy his own stuff more. Now there's a sentence I never thought would pass my lips/fingertips!
Here do not get me wrong here. But solo Bob And bobby boomtown One stands and tells storys the other cones alive. and I have to say bob solo has done some great solo songs like Soft soil
Been told a completely new set this year. Whether that is true or not, have to wait and see. I know he was working on a new album when events took over. Give me solo over Rats any time, but you all know that by now. Will be doing both this year. Whatever way, I will have to do a lot of travelling. Unconfirmed one in the north of England on my birthday and another unconfirmed in Wales. Also another festival or two.

Not yet confirmed on BG website. Thinking about doing this one. It's H's birthday. He's not decided whether he wants to spend it on a wet weekend in Preston or not. May depend on football fixtures .

I believe the first 3 rows for Preston have gone to a ticket agency. A friend booked from the venue and was told that. I will probably go to Preston, but not sure of dates yet for something which may clash. Hope I can go. It's on my Birthday lol. Also trying to work out if I can get from Dorking to Norwich by train in time to see the Rats in Norwich. Have ticket for that. Otherwise I will miss Dorking and go from Clacton.
Wasn't planning to do Clacton but could be persuaded I guess Not much more than an hour away if the crossings to the dark side of the river are clear.
Are you doing whole weekend? Offer to Norwich extends if so but I'm coming home every night, so you might want Friday night nearer me/Dorking than in Clacton (if not too late).Much safer option too

We will be flying into London on Friday and then on to eating, drinking and gigging in Clacton. Next day to Dorking, doing more or less the same.
No plans for Norwich for now, but I could be persuaded I guess Otherwise a few more days in London. I will PM you nearer the date, see if we can somehow merge our plans.
Will do. I'm all booked up for the week so will see you at one/some/all. Hopefully the Swiss gig is confirmed too as festival is selling on basis Rats are performing.
Got my ticket for Norwich. Website says have to book hotels early. There is a Holiday Inn. (hint) Also going to do Dorking and Clacton. Still to get tickets, but will do very soon. So shall see you all there. And doing Preston I think, on my birthday, but will be coming to that from Stratford probably. I see November is clear. I am sure there will be another tour this year too.

Def. doing Preston, got my ticket, my other trip is now the following week. I see Dorking is tweeting that Bob will be singing the Rats hits and some solo music. Don't think they are selling many tickets. I think they thought they were booking the Rats. 950 standing. The usual 2-300 at his gigs will be lost in there.
Oh dear. Dorking might fall by the wayside. Was planning on going.
There is a gig in Barcelona advertised on 16th March, tickets for sale. No confirmation by the website??? Surely that would be too short notice to expect tickets to sell. Wasn't planning on going myself.

This double life could lead to some confusion especially as for some the two are more or less synonymous.
For some Geldof is the Boomtown Rats and vice versa. A bit like Byran Ferry & Roxy Music. Obviously if you are a fan you know the difference, but if I went to see Bryan Ferry, I would be expecting the Roxy Music songs and if I had any inkling that wouldn't be the case I probably wouldn't go, especially if I was aware of Roxy Music touring at the same time.
A small caveat, I don't always remember which are the Ferry solo songs. e.g Slave To Love, The In Crowd, Don't Stop The Dance, Tokyo Joe may as well be Roxy Music singles cos they don't sound much different.

There are at least 2 people going according to Songkick! :D
It being fairly local I know of another half dozen going to Dorking gig (in full knowledge it's not Rats) so it's not as if no one knows about it. Not saying it will be anywhere near full, but I'd be disappointed if there weren't enough for it to go ahead. Local press will only piclk up on it nearer the time as is the norm so have faith
It depends how many are sold and the policy of the venue as to whether it would be cancelled. They may close off upper sections if they have a fair enough number for downstairs. I guess it's a tiered theatre if it holds those numbers.
Hand on heart I really don't see the point of solo gigs now' Apart from rat fans not many have heard geldofs solo work'He always has to turn to his rats songs to get the crowd going

I suppose that before the rats reformed that the only opportunity to hear the songs live was to see Geldof solo so you would get a few rats fans going on that basis, whereas now you can just wait until the rats come to town. That said, he does play most of the better solo stuff and it is a pretty good show. but I wouldn't go outside the North circular to see it.
I have been to 5 of his solo gigs and the crowd always shouting out for rat songs. But I do like his solo stuff God I have all the albums and singles. It's just a Geldof thing for me any way. But I stand by what I said I do feel Now is not the time to be doing solo gigs. Might have been in the past. But come on the Rats are back so let hope for a 40th tour Or some gigs from them anyway B4 they hang up the snake suites
Many would be enough to sell enough tickets at modest venues and not have them continually cancelled over the last 25 years.
Geldof solo is very niche. He has some die hards but lacks broader appeal. As man at the top has alluded to, some go to hear Mondays, Rat Trap et al and some go just to see him talk, as per this review (which is pretty good on the whole).
"Don't worry about the music, Bob - just keep talking."

I just must be lucky because I've been to seven solo gigs over the years, and none of them were 'continually cancelled' and all were enjoyable. Yes, I prefer the Rats' gigs but as this article from 2003 suggests, the solo gigs are enjoyable in a different way and where you are right is that up until 2013 this was the only way I could hear the Rats' songs unless you include the other variants, which I saw an example of at the Robin in Bilston, once.
