The Nation's Favourite 70s Number Ones - ITV

Amazingly the Rats didn't have two in the top twenty.   But Mondays does make the compilation album; would be interested to know where it ranked.

Leaving the Bee Gees and Four Seasons aside, it is mostly quite good, especially given it was a public vote. Pleasantly surprised to see Ian Dury, T.Rex, Slade and Sweet make it.  Incredibly no John Revolting and Olivia Newton John.  And how David Bowie didn't make it with Space Oddity defies belief.

  1. Bohemian Rhapsody Queen (1975)
  2. Dancing Queen Abba (1976)
  3. Bridge Over Troubled Water Simon and Garfunkel (1970)
  4. Heart Of Glass Blondie (1979)
  5. Wuthering Heights Kate Bush (1978)
  6. I Will Survive Gloria Gaynor (1979)
  7. Night Fever Bee Gees (1978)
  8. Without You Nilsson (1972)
  9. Im Not In Love 10cc (1975)
  10. YMCA Village People (1979)
  11. Hot Love T.Rex (1971)
  12. December 1963 (Oh What A Night) Four Seasons (1976)
  13. I Feel Love Donna Summer (1977)
  14. Sailing Rod Stewart (1975)
  15. Cum On Feel The Noize Slade (1973)
  16. Band Of Gold Freda Payne (1970)
  17. Dont Go Breaking My Heart Elton John and Kiki Dee (1976)
  18. Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick Ian Dury and the Blockheads (1978)
  19. Blockbuster Sweet (1973)
  20. Rock Your Baby George McCrae (1974)

Next week the 1980s - how sh!t will that be?    Still I suppose I can hope for a good placing for Come On Eileen and Ghost Town.

Somehow there were 20 decent number ones in the 1980s....

  1. The Specials - Ghost Town
  2. Dexys Midnight Runners and the Emerald Express - Come On Eileen
  3. The Jam - Town Called Malice
  4. Pretenders - Brass in Pocket
  5. Soft Cell - Tainted Love
  6. Dave Stewartand Barbara Gaskin - It's My Party
  7. The Special A.K.A. feat.Rico - Too Much Too Young
  8. Blondie - Atomic
  9. The Jam Going Underground
  10. Blondie - Call Me
  11. David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes
  12. The Jam - Start!
  13. Dexys Midnight Runners - Geno
  14. Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver
  15. The Human League - Don't You Want Me
  16. David Bowie - Let's Dance
  17. Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax
  18. Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Two Tribes
  19. Madonna - Into the Groove
  20. Fairground Attraction - Perfect

Oh and for good measure, even if it's not his finest moment, he deserves a mention for being a member of The Damned...

  • Captain Sensible - Happy Talk

Space Oddity was recorded and released in the 60s although a hit on rerelease in 1975.

I enjoyed the show which was on last Thursday,  the 80s show is yet to air.

Haven't checked every last date but I'd venture vast majority (first fifteen?) of those 80s tracks were 80-82, in other words tail end of a golden era for music. Went badly downhill from there, so this chart isn't too far off as a representation of the decade for my money.

That was my list. I would say most are in 1980 and 1981. Some real shockers after that. Goombay Dance Band? Wtf?

Whether it's just an age thing,  I don't know but for me 84/85 was when things went badly downhill and certainly agree 80 to 82 was the best fifth of the decade. Conversely, 88 to 90 was the worst and once Snap/Marrs/Jack your body/Jive your bunny and every act with 'featuring' DJ Bloggs MC etc  began to infest the charts, I gave up.

Obviously I am old.  1982 was when things slipped from what I saw.  I did look at 1990s #1s and aside from Blur, Oasis, The Verve and Blondie there ain't much else I care for.  Well except The Clash but that was from the early 1980s.  Perversely the 2000s looks better.  As for 2010s, the songs I know are mainly covers.

That said, I think it is just the nature of today's download charts. Despite 4 #1 albums, Kasabian's best is #3.  Royal Blood have a single peak of #43, Black Keys #57.  Even Indie charts aren't particularly representative of what is what I would consider indie.

I'm with Mark L on this. So not necessarily an age thing. I believe Arrgee, you are very close in age to me. Not sure about you Mark .
