Amazingly the Rats didn't have two in the top twenty.   But Mondays does make the compilation album; would be interested to know where it ranked.

Leaving the Bee Gees and Four Seasons aside, it is mostly quite good, especially given it was a public vote. Pleasantly surprised to see Ian Dury, T.Rex, Slade and Sweet make it.  Incredibly no John Revolting and Olivia Newton John.  And how David Bowie didn't make it with Space Oddity defies belief.

Space Oddity was recorded and released in the 60s although a hit on rerelease in 1975. 

I enjoyed the show which was on last Thursday,  the 80s show is yet to air.

Haven't checked every last date but I'd venture vast majority (first fifteen?) of those 80s tracks were 80-82, in other words tail end of a golden era for music. Went badly downhill from there, so this chart isn't too far off as a representation of the decade for my money.

That was my list. I would say most are in 1980 and 1981. Some real shockers after that. Goombay Dance Band? Wtf?

Whether it's just an age thing,  I don't know but for me 84/85 was when things went badly downhill and certainly agree 80 to 82 was the best fifth of the decade. Conversely, 88 to 90 was the worst and once Snap/Marrs/Jack your body/Jive your bunny and every act with 'featuring' DJ Bloggs MC etc  began to infest the charts, I gave up.

Obviously I am old.  1982 was when things slipped from what I saw.  I did look at 1990s #1s and aside from Blur, Oasis, The Verve and Blondie there ain't much else I care for.  Well except The Clash but that was from the early 1980s.  Perversely the 2000s looks better.  As for 2010s, the songs I know are mainly covers.  

That said, I think it is just the nature of today's download charts. Despite 4 #1 albums, Kasabian's best is #3.  Royal Blood have a single peak of #43, Black Keys #57.  Even Indie charts aren't particularly representative of what is what I would consider indie.
