I think I'm getting into this tribute band thing in a big way. Having seen Limehouse Lizzy and realising how talented a good one good could be, I agreed to go to see A Whole Lotta Led (tribute to Led Zeppelin) last night.

I've always loved Zeppelin, but realised I had only scratched the surface with their music, with perhaps one album, and an odd EP, or listening to albums belonging to friends/past boyfriends. There's so much more to them than I ever knew. The band was excellent and my regret was not having seen Zeppelin themselves live. I just can't imagine how brilliant they must have been. The last time they played in the UK was in 1979 at Knebworth x 2. This concert was a celebration of those two gigs. It opened my eyes to what a truly fantastic band Zeppelin were - more than I had ever even appreciated - seeing their songs performed live, by this talented band; seeing how far they had taken the experimentation with their music. At one point they produced an instrument I had never seen. It looked like an aerial from a radio on a wooden box and produced an incredible sound. Any ideas? Hearing Stairway to Heaven performed live, told me that was one of the best songs ever written. It knocks Imagine right off the top, even Bohemian Rhapsody. Not only is it powerful, emotive and beautiful, but musically superbly creative. OK I'm no musician but I have a pair of ears which enjoy and appreciate different sounds.

At first I felt they lacked the energy needed, but as the evening progressed and very quickly they warmed up I was proved wrong, very wrong. The drummer did a drum solo, which lasted around 20 minutes. He put everything into it and immediately followed with an equally powerful song, with no breather.

This was quite a different experience from seeing Limehouse for me, as I'd seen Thin Lizzy live, it was a chance to relive what I had heard in the past and would not ever have another chance of doing. This experience was something knew and to use an American term, it was awesome.

Before I had seen Limehouse Lizzy I had always thought that I would be disappointed, that a band could not live up to expectations without the charisma of the lead singer and the dynamics of the original band. Nothing could live up to the original. But I was wrong. A good tribute band can provide a fantastic experience, and are well worth going to see.

i am ashamed to say that when i was younger, i was submitted to various abba/bee gees tribute bands.none of which were very good.i have to say i prefer to see live bands and a lot of the ones i like i can get in easily and cheap because their not that big yet

I've seen some real dross too, some of the local bands are dire! One time, I went to a local venue to see a live band, they were so bad, I had to leave. It was giving me a headache. I've also seen some good ones and when you hit on a good one, it makes up for all the crap.Sadly, I didn't get to see Radiohead or Supergrass in their early days.

I've chosen not to see Abba and Bee Gee tribute bands as they are two a penny, everyone wants to do it and many will be run of the mill, as in your experience. When they are good, I'm sure they are good fun. But I expect you have to pay to see a decent one, because of the demand. It is a good idea to go on recommendation, that is when you usually strike gold. If I pay a visit to a pub and there happens to be a live band in there it is only on the odd occasion that they are enjoyable.

We had to travel out of the area last night (not a long way, but it was a drive). Led filled the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon easily. We were lucky enough to have front row middle seats - just the seats I'm always after when I see Bob.

I'm now waiting for T-Rextesy to do a gig closer to home and also looking out for a Slade or Sweet tribute band.
