I believe there were plans to, but nothing confirmed.  I don't know how commercially viable it would be, but if they sold it at gigs it would probably sell well like the Ratlife Vinyl ep.  Part of the Isle of Wight gig did get an airing on Sky Arts and there are three songs on YouTube.

I have to confess the only DVDs I have bought in the last few years (or more accurately been given at Yule) are the Arsenal end of season efforts, and given that most people stream video, I'm not sure there will be many takers for this.  Well except Derek and his dozen copies.

I was hoping for something more recent. There certainly had been whisperings. Maybe, if they announce an Autumn tour, they will do as ArrGee says. I've ordered this already though. Glad to have something different.

You'll have to let us know if it's any good.   If it is I will stick it on my pressie list.

I am 100% certain they will tour post-festival season.  Hoping for a different London venue like Koko or Troxy.  Or maybe something more intimate at the Hope & Anchor or The 100 Club.  IndigO2 would be convenient if a little soulless.

Bloody hell. Aren't you glad of a classic Rats set up from 1978 that seems to have escaped even YouTube and the Internet in general all these years? How this concert has remained 'secret' for so long is indeed a mystery, but a welcome one. Anyone know exactly where in Germany this concert was filmed?

Re Rats more up to date dvd I just download bits and pieces on to a usb from YouTube and watch it on my big  telly so there is no need for a dvd as such. On the other hand a full concert with proper camera angles and just capturing the spirit of the event is an art in itself, and for that a full dvd is the way to go. I think Cork or Guildford or the one in Devon would all have made good dvd's. Maybe the Roundhouse or Forum also.

The could sell them at the 'merch' stall along with the mugs. Certainly in Dublin the instant cd's post gig seemed to sell well, probably helped by the copious amount of Guinness and lager  drowned.

Noel, did you not read my last sentence. I'm glad to have this, but was also hoping/expecting a more recent one. It was actually a nice surprise to see it available, hence the order.

Sorry. As usual I was multitasking on the net.smile The only other Rats in Germany '78 is at the Musikladen TV Show which is not a proper concert, so I am iintrigued to know about this 'new' and up till now 'lost' concert, lost from the internet age that is.

I've seen the reformed Rats so often now that I would prefer an old  concert dvd . The biggest mystery ever is how the Rats were recorded in Japan in 1980 doing Diamond Smiles and that is the only part of the    concert ever seen on the Internet. Somewhere in the vaults lies a full Rats in Japan concert and I want the keys to the vault.smile

Wonder whatever happened to that Japanese Rats site that was around a number of years ago? I think BTR said that he had seen the full 1980 Japanese concert so it must exist.

Also I meant to say about that version of Diamond Smiles they actually mistakenly start with Go Man Go, a song that was yet to appear on Mondo Bongo more than  7 months later. So they were  working on Go Man Go in May 1980, a full 7 months before Mondo Bongo was released. I am really intrigued by that. We tend to think of 'clean breaks' between albums, with a completely new batch of songs emerging, while it seems songs were always works in progress, though they may only be bits snippets of the final songs we come to know and love.

Look forward to this. But in my opinion all you have to do is stick on the 1978 The Boomtown Rats live at the Hammersmith Odeon, and you more or less got what's coming out in June. By the way the young guys at the start of the dvd  jumping about and taking about the album. Anyone know who they are and if they are still around today??

Each concert will be different, a different vibe if you will- any keen  watcher/fan will always notice things that the more casual fan might not pick up on. Who knows, the German concert may turn out to be better than Hammersmith? Just be glad there's another classic Rats gig on the way.

I thought I read somewhere that some of the lads jumping around went on to form a punk band, or at least one of them was in  some minor punk outfit. Must look it up. Maybe the others sold out and went on to be stockbrokers.smile

Also throw in the Rock Goes To College and Revolver appearances that are widely available via torrents and the like.  That said there are a few songs (So Strange, All The Rage, Never Bite The Hand That Feeds) that aren't on the above, and Neon Heart and Mary should also get a full showing (Mary abridged on RGTC and both audio only on Hammersmith DVD).

Amazes me that this stuff has just lurked untouched in the vaults for years.

I like the physical product too.......and to whet our appetites, here's She's So Modern from this dvd lifted from You Tube performed in front of the traditional stiff and seated German tv audiences of the 70s and 80s, mostly looking like they're in a restaurant having a meal, when Bob and the boys gatecrashed

The Rats are on top form there, so a full 'concert' from this strange venue might just hit the spot. Do The Rat did surface from this video, but the full track listing includes songs like So Strange and Neon Heart,  Do You In and kicks so I'm actually looking forward to this.

The Rats could easily have went to sleep for an audience they knew probably would not 'get them', but quite the reverse. Bob and the boys seem totally on fire. It was performances like this that actually got me into the band in the first place. When you're about 13 or 14 and  this is your first 'introduction' to what rock music should be, it's hard not to be affected.I keep saying it. The Rats were a once off band and I'm looking forward to Bristol in less than a fortnight.

Wonderbar (if that's a real German word)smile

Good observation Mark about the Rats seeming to crash the party.

Definitely worth purchasing. Watching it right now. It's good to have another live performance from their earlier days. I'd forgotten just how hyperactive Geldof was on stage. He's pretty energetic now.

Good show .

It's also good to see some other tracks live.

im not sure what the point is of the addition of the last 2 bonus tracks. They are obviously miming and rehearsed/contrived for TV. Still not complaining about having them. smile

As the audience are German I doubt they really understand the lyrics like a native English speaker would. Also 'punk' was new then, so they are probably a bit surprised by the whole thing.

I suspect this was recorded before Rat Trap was a hit single. Even at the Middlesex  Uni gig Rat Trap was a mid gig song. The Middlesex concert again was recorded before Rat Trap had been released as a single. Strange as it may seem some in the Rats didn't deem Rat Trap as being worthy of being a single, more a good album track.

Haven't got the dvd, as I thought it would be available in the shops. Would have been so easy to pop into HMV and just buy it. Don't get why it has to be mail order only. Surely that works against the casual buyer, who might see it and but  it on the spot.

Maybe if you could download it instantly then that would be a  good thing. I just hate waiting for the postman.smile

Where did you read/hear that?  I know it wasn't planned as a single, but I don't think anyone thought it was unworthy. From the mastertapes broadcast, Geldof & Mutt Lange had it as "the song" on the LP despite already having numerous candidates for singles.

I guess the German producers don't have any distributors so just sell the CDs/DVDs on their site.  It isn't even on Amazon.de.    I agree with the download part.  I haven't bought/rented a DVD for years, so it's no surprise the last decent rental store in London has closed...

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/its-all-over-now-for-mick-jaggers-notting-hill-video-store-10291108.html

a perfect storm of events that included soaring business rates, the opening of Westfield in Shepherds Bush, the departure of customers from the area as property prices rose and Apples decision not to include a DVD player in its newest laptops."

The lack of a CD/DVD player in new laptops caught me out recently.  Luckily I still have an old laptop.  I am still hanging onto my VHS recorder like a true luddite, and now it seems DVDs are obsolete.

When I was in the US a few years ago they had DVD rental vending machines.  How cool is that?   $1 for the films (and all new releases which the likes of Virgin charge £4 for on PPV) which was handy given we had no internet connection at our villa.  Suspect these have bitten the dust as well.

The beauty of pre-ordering several weeks before release is you forget about it when the time comes. It then just arrives and it's a nice surprise. Otherwise it seems to take forever.

It seems very hit and miss as to whether you get it very quickly or not at all.

Probably just ripped it and wants to get their cash back. Cheaper than getting it direct.

Signed copies will be available at gigs, if people don't want to mail order and also have an autographed copy.

There's the upcoming Carfest North/South, Watchet in Sommerset, Norwich, Norway and Latitude, Rebellion Blackpool.

Also I think Jules said that Pete mentioned there would be more gigs in the autumn.

Maybe there is merchandise at festival gigs?

Hopefully,  there will be standalone gigs and I might get mine from one of those because it has still not arrived and no reply to chaser email which I kept polite. It seems nobody does anything now in the UK unless you jump up and down like a child and stamp your feet to get attention......

There was Rat merch on sale at Bristol, Cheltenham, Guildford and some of the others, probably most of them. Usually there is a merchandise tent or area where all sorts of things related to the particular festival are sold. There were nice new Rats t shirts at Bristol but I was in a bit of a rush and hadn't time to appreciate them.

Re the dvd why is this not available in Hmv/Tower or any music shop. Unless you know about it online and then bother to buy it it's not really going to sell.OR why not make it available for download, which is the easiest way of distributing it? I've have bought it as a download,or else in HMV but Gonzo media best known to themselves only sell it online, and some have not yet received copies.

Sorry to raise any hopes but was just a reference to upcoming published appearances. If any of those have 'rights' over merch then DVDs may not be present but as per EPs let me know if you (i.e. anyone reading) want a signed copy and I'll collect and pass on for cost + p&p.

The best way (and most profitable way) of selling  these DVDs/CDs is mail order.  Next is at the venues like the concert live CDs and the Ratsh!t ep.  Then in stores, but when you look at the costs involved that only makes sense if you are selling thousands.

I don't see why HMV in the UK would bother stocking it.  I suspect that if they got one copy for each store, then the vast majority would be gathering dust in a year's time and would end up at Fopp selling for a couple of quid.  I can't remember the last time I looked at DVDs in a store except for the bargains in Fopp.

Download is an easy way of distributing, but it's not very profitable for a small number of downloads because no one will pay £15 for the download.

You might be able to order it through HMV, if you asked.

Excellent quality. Hyper performance from Geldof, resulting in some trips and slips but he extricates himself seamlessly. Fascinating to see how the look and feel of the band changed in just 2 years by the time of the Banana Republic performance on Musikladen and then again 18 months later with House on Fire.

Yeh the 78 concert is brill but banana and house they almost looked embarrassed to be miming which is a shame because these two tracks are always brill live but the miming is not good but hey it's still the rats

What amazing news!! I am completely out of the loop; haven't visited the site in months, and after checking last night, I see they were on Imelda May, and, the big news, a brand new 1978 DVD! The clip on YouTube looks excellent.

I love the 1978 shows; Hammersmith & Rock Goes to College, so cannot wait to see this (just ordered from Amazon)

 What are your five?

I have Hammersmith, On a night like this and Whyteleafe, are there others ?

I do have others like middx poly and  goldiggers, but they were bbc recordings.

Bought this at the Cork gig on Thursday night. It's really good. Works well watching on  a big screen tv.

It shows how even a 50 minute set can be totally entrancing. This is the Rats in their early incarnation with everything to prove. Geldof in particular is totally manic, falling over a few times. Best to watch  in in sequence from the start as you build up to an amazing climax at Lookiing After Number One, in which Geldof almost loses the plot.

Great version of So Strange, and  It's All The Rage, but all the songs are fantastic, and the whole tv small stage  setup is fantastic, no miming and Geldof and the soundman at loggerheads towards the latter part of the gig. All the band are totally into it, Gerry Cott always seems a little detached by that works too as he is a level headed foil to all the rest who are losing their heads all around.

Forty years later nothing has really changed. Geldof more or less puts in the same shift  with the same conviction, as do the rest of the band.
