FFS at the troxy on 29th June is probably my best upcoming gig. The Who and guests at Hyde park is another. Beyond that not much on till later in the year for me. I have some spares for U2 (November) and Maximo Park (December). More occupied with Football, Rugby, Tennis and Theatre in forthcoming months. Even sold my blur ticket for next weekend.

Two good gigs in Dublin which I missed because I found out too late about them were : Television and Wilco Johnson, both at the Academy. Black Grape are playing Dublin soon , found out about that the old fashioned way, a street poster. That's on this coming Friday 19 june again at the Academy, where incidentally Amanda Palmer also played very recently.

I'm not really fussed about live music these days. In the late '80s and 90's yes, but nowadays most of it is rather disappointing. I just prefer to listen to recorded music. Currently listening to lots of Caravan, a band from the so called 'Canterbury Scene' in the late sixties. Also a band called Gentle Giant , sort of folk/rock/prog from the 1970's.

Apart from the Rats the only band I would really not like to miss is The Only Ones, who have always been one of my favorites. But they don't play that often.

Black Grape are in London next Friday (26th June) but the gig isn't selling that well, most likely because many punters of a certain age who would be in the audience like myself are going to be at Hyde Park or Glastonbury that day. Bad scheduling.

NOTE to Boomtown Rats - Avoid 25,26,29,30 Oct and 2,3 Nov in London. Some other Irish band are playing. Saturday 31st October looks perfect for the 40th anniversary gig with the Rugby World Cup Final at 4pm as a warm up. Not that I am a big Rugby fan, but any excuse for a beer or ten.

I'm still trying to get to see Wilko, but he's not exactly a cheap night out anymore. Was sad to miss out on tickets to see Amanda Palmer in London last week, she always puts on a great show, but a sit down at Union Chapel not that appealing compared to her usual more sweat-and-glitter gigs.

Thant's handy cos they are celebrating ten years since the release of their debut A Certain Trigger in 2005 and they are playing the album in its entirety.
I wonder if we can look forward to a 40th anniversary rendition of A Tonic for the Troops in 2018 ?

Heard FFS on 6Music last night, having not given any thought to finding out what they sounded like when they started getting coverage. Bloody hell, seriously good. Unfortunately, 24 hours too late for their London show.

Shame because it wasn't sold out. Was an absolutely brilliant gig. Having being the length of a football pitch away from the stage for The Who/Paul Weller/Kaiser Chiefs/Johnny Marr/Gaz Coombes, it was good to get close enough to see the reds of their eyes. Bit hot and sweaty though. I suspect they will play a few more dates in October/November.

Yeah pretty good on first hearing. This band is about 5 gigs in apparently.

3 guitars, bass, drums and keyboard, with quite a bit of emphasis on latter. Some immediate hooks though so would see them again or maybe listen to recordings to familiarise.

Difficult to categorise but one song with throbbing bass and a bit of synth/keyboard had me thinking of Public Image (song)/Psycho Killer and Neat Neat Neat all at once.

Looking ahead, I'll be going to Ruts DC at Jazz Cafe (think it's October time). Thoroughly recommend them for a bit of punk throwback combined with dub reggae if anyone's interested.

I'll keep an eye out, would love to see them, maybe get close enough to whack a bit of Nair on Ron Mael's top lip.

Off to see Squeeze this w/e - should be good! Got me thinking though about gigs and obsessions and stuff! I mean there are gigs I go to that I look forward to, and enjoy and remember fondly but that's it. Whereas with the BTRs it's so different somehow. Think it might date back to being in the playground when I was 14/15 and hearing some people saying how they'd been to London the previous night and seen the Rats and it just felt like a dagger through my heart somehow as I'd never have been able to go - Never in a Million Years! But really (so) strange how some things you can just go to and enjoy and then other times it's just so all-consuming that at times you're not just relaxing and enjoying it, but just a bit stressed by it all as the pressure to enjoy it is so great. Mad or what?

Anyway just wondered if it's me that's barmy or whether you lot are too?

I am not like that with gigs, but I am with football, so I know what you mean. The only time I am a bit like that at gigs is when someone comes with me who isn't necessarily a big fan. Then I feel responsible if they don't enjoy it.

This is the main reason I tend to go to gigs alone, I worry too much if I'm taking someone along.

Hope Squeeze are good Lisa, and enjoy the great John Cooper Clarke supporting, he's still one of my favourite live acts.

Speaking of, he's playing a free gig at Rough Trade East on 17th October, then Tom Robinson's there for a cheap gig on 19th. Saw Tom last Friday at his album launch gig and he's put together a brilliant band, sounded stonkingly good. They also split the evening into two 1hr+ sets, one of oldies/hits, giving people freedom to bugger off if they didn't want to hear the set of the new stuff.

I was rather anxious in Oxford, when we took a friend. Agree about having a certain responsibility. This was made worse by the fact the one and only time he had been to a Rats gig it was whilst they were doing the Uni circuit back in the 80s and they refused to do Mondays and Rat Trap. He'd never forgiven Bob for that

. Whilst I was assured they would do both tracks, I was worried that he HAD to have an extra good time to get over this. Fortunately he did. He loved it.

I had a experience with Jarvis ****er solo. I knew he wasn't going to any Pulp songs, but friend who came was really hacked off about it as that was the only reason he came...

... since then I have a few different people to go to gigs with, but will go solo rather than take someone who won't like it. Some moan a bit that we get too close to the front, cos it's too far from the bar, well except suss. He went flying in for The Damned. I stood back a bit for that one, though towards the end I did go forward and saw him on the barrier with a sweaty heap pressed up against him.

I thought they ALWAYS did Rat Trap. No wonder he was so hacked off. I wasn't too happy they dropped Joey on the last tour, but they can't drop Rat Trap. I have never seen them not perform that. They also do them now, but back in the day, mid 80s, they got sick to death of them, so didn't do them. My friend has forgiven them now, having seen a 'superb performance' of both. The gap has been filled in his life

I know they dropped Mondays for a while, but I thought that Rat Trap was in every Rats and Geldof set ever since it first appeared.

I remember once Pulp didn't do Common People live and there was a real sense of anti climax.

I could take not hearing Mondays, but no Rat Trap, that is unthinkable. It is the only song I have heard every time I have seen the Rats or Geldof. Have seen them without Mondays, Clockwork etc, but never Rat Trap. They definitely have to play it in Dublin, even if they play nothing else.

Thanks, Tango - yes Squeeze were very good. Glenn Tilbrook's voice is still so good, and they put on quite a show - quirky videos, amazing lights and great performance. I must admit I do prefer Chris Difford though he seems to take a secondary role to Glenn, but he has something about him that just really appeals to me- a bit rougher and more raw than Glenn.

First time I'd seen JCC and didn't really know what to expect, but I enjoyed it - he must be one of the few to outdo Bob swearing! biggrin

Chris Difford is such a great songwriter - very talented. I have one of his solo albums - Cashmere if You Can - which is amazing. Must get some more. Have seen him solo twice and he is such a great raconteur.

Well, if The Rats came from somewhere else like Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester or Sheffield I wouldn't bother, but I am always up for a night out in Dublin. Didn't go to the last one at Vicar St. cos they were coming to London a few weeks later.

The Whelan's date three years ago did cause a bit of a conflict cos it was Pulp's return to Sheffield. I figured that I'd better see the Rats in Dublin cos that was pretty unlikely to happen again, whereas Pulp were bound to play a few more gigs...

... how wrong I was. considering the return of Geldof and Briquette and that Pulp haven't played a gig on terra firma since that night.

Given it is the 40th anniversary gig, it is hard not to go. But they better play Rat Trap!

Apparently there is a world beyond the M25. Though as I rarely venture outside it , I just presume it is like Mordor and best avoided

It would be cheaper if you live in and around London. I suspect for the likes of Noel and IrelandCalling this is far preferable. Those of us who live in the smoke have done well with a number of performances in and around London (Hurtwood, Ifield, Roundhouse, Forum, Maida Vale; satellite cities like Cambridge and Oxford as well as some accessible festivals), and three of those were a lot cheaper than £20.

I think it was a mistake to put up a potential gig with an all encompassing location (London) for the venue and no set date. Not to mention sticking it on facebook and basing the ticket allocation on a like. At least, the Labour party made people pay £3 to participate. You'd probably get as many likes popping up a photo of a cat. I suspect that of the thousand likes relating to the gig, less than 200 would have actually bought a ticket. I suspect the Rats planned to play a fairly large venue which is why the ticket price was set at £20. £4,000 wouldn't cover the costs.

That said, I think it is a very good idea to have a gig for fans. Two of the best Pulp gigs I went to were fan club gigs. Likewise Hurtwood, which is up there as one of the best since the reunion, was effectively a fan gig given the subterfuge around it. I believe Ifield was similar but given it was sandwiched between Elvis Costello and The Stone Roses, I wasn't able to make that.

They have now played for three summers in a row, and at the very least should play a few festivals next summer . It is highly likely that the Rats will play in and around London next year either as part of a festival like Field Day or BST Hyde Park, or as a headlining gig in its own right. The Roundhouse and The Forum were both effectively sold out, and I'm sure that there are promoters who'd quite happily have a one off gig on at venues like Troxy, Electric Ballroom or Shepherd's Bush.

London would have been far cheaper for me, bus fare, tube fare, ticket etc. Rats in Dublin is unmissable though and probably the right place to hold a 40th anniversary gig. I get a weekend away

Sunday is actually far cheaper for the trip. Return flights under £50 coming back early Monday, and Sun night accommodation a fraction of Sat costs. Might be worth investigating?

Oi! That's my story!

My flight out is at about 1.30pm, but I am hoping to get to the airport for noon, so I can avail of the lounge.... (hic)

I did come back with milk when I flew back from Cork. They had some small (250ml) bottles in the lounge, so I popped one in my drawstring bag and brought it home in case we didn't have any. I probably didn't need the small bottle of wine I also took.

I was tempted to take the 5pm flight to Dublin which would have seen me in the city by about 7.30pm/8.00pm.

Did this gig last night with the very pleasant company of Tango. If you like/know any of their stuff I don't think you'll be disappointed. Maybe should defer to my forum companion for a less partial view.

One thing I will say; seen them about 6 times in 18 months now and never seen same set twice. Even between last Saturday and last night there were 2 song changes plus order was revised. Makes a big difference to enjoyment, even for band I'd hazard. Be interesting to see if upcoming Rats or BG gigs contain changes.

Anyway, U2, Suede, Maximo Park and The Damned coming up before the end of the year as well as The Rats.

I did see Adam Ant next June at Brixton, but £40 seems a bit steep even if he is going to play Kings of the Wild Frontier in full.

Was very pleasantly surprised to find a recognised more tracks than I thought I knew, and they sounded great, those basslines in particular are brilliant live. They share Geldof's tendency to wander off into other people's songs, but they keep it short and sweet, while I've always felt Bob's get away with him a bit. Definitely worth a punt I'd say.

Got a right mixed bag coming up; Membranes, Tom Robinson, probably the Mountain Goats and Maximo Park when next payday rolls around. My next gig is to see Tankus the Henge! They played at Watchet festival and were amazing! Described as "An explosive ball of fearsome energy... Their music draws from a multitudinous array of influences including rock, ragtime, reggae, blues, funk, disco, gypsy punk and Django."

Actual ticket price was £30. But about £40 once all the fees were added.

Cheap enough, but if you can't see anything unless they fall of the stage...

. I wouldn't have minded a seat for this one, but unless you get an obscured view or right at the top at the back they aren't affordable.

Did this gig last night with the very pleasant company of Tango. If you like/know any of their stuff I don't think you'll be disappointed. Maybe should defer to my forum companion for a less partial view.
One thing I will say; seen them about 6 times in 18 months now and never seen same set twice. Even between last Saturday and last night there were 2 song changes plus order was revised. Makes a big difference to enjoyment, even for band I'd hazard. Be interesting to see if upcoming Rats or BG gigs contain changes.

I must've sounded fairly enthusiastic, mate in Brighton, fan from back in the day, just booked ticket for Wednesday. Just hope he enjoys it now!
