Bob Geldof . . . the outspoken singer has been advised to keep his opinions to himself
Louise

HE is known the world over for his outspoken views, but when Bob Geldof arrives in Dublin this weekend he has been advised to keep his opinions to himself.
The Boomtown Rats star will be back on home turf this Sunday to pick up the Freedom of the City award from Dublin City Council for the work he has done to raise awareness of famine and his campaign to alleviate Third World debt in Africa.
And while everyone loves Bob for his impulsive outbursts, it seems that the city council won't be having any of the anti-poverty campaigner's antics.
When Geldof was initially proposed for the accolade six months ago, certain councillors were reluctant to give the rock star the award in case he used the ceremony as an opportunity to hit out at the Government's failure to uphold its commitment to contribute 0.7pc of Gross National Product (GNP) to overseas development aid.
And while the Dubliner has told the council that he is extremely honoured to receive the award, it seems that city chiefs are still anxious about what might happen when the singer gets in front of a microphone.
Officials from the council have been in touch with Geldof about 'protocol' for the ceremony and have told him his acceptance speech is to be no longer than three minutes.
"We've been through protocol," said a council spokesman. "He's not going to be controversial."
The Freedom of the City award will also honour the work Geldof has put into organising the original Live Aid concert and the Live 8 concerts around the world.
He will be sharing this year's award with Irish runner Ronnie Delaney - 50 years after his triumph in the 1,500 metres final at the Melbourne Olympics.
More than 500 guests are expected to attend the ceremony which will take place outside the Mansion House in Dublin. Dawson Street will be closed for five hours while the ceremony takes place.
Both Bob Geldof and Ronnie Delaney will be presented with official Freedom of the City commemorative scrolls and custom made Waterford Crystal globes of the world. On Geldof's Waterford Crystal globe-shaped award, the continent of Africa will be highlighted to represent his work in promoting the humanitarian effort there.
Olympic rings will cover the globe that will be presented to Ronnie Delaney to show the achievements he made in Irish running throughout his illustrious career.
Bob Geldof and Ronnie Delaney now join U2, Mother Theresa, Bill Clinton, Mikhail Gorbachev and Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi as freemen.
Privileges attached to the award entitle recipients to bring goods into Dublin without paying customs duties and to graze sheep on St Stephen's Green. Bono memorably brought spring lambs to the Green when U2 were granted the award.
Do Dublin's city councillors have no concept of irony? They're going to make Geldof a freeman, but he's to keep him mouth shut in the process?
Go on Bob, go to Dublin, go to the ceremony & promptly tell them to shove it up their a**e, that you will not be told what you can & cannot say by a shower of Fianna Fail spivs.
If the price of a gong is selling your freedom of speech, then that's a price too high.

Sometimes I am baffeled by the powers that be in our country. I say this is 21 years too late. Bob should have got the freedom of Dublin after Band Aid & Live Aid. Dublin city council rekoned back then that Bob hadn't done enough for the city. Think a trip to the city is on the cards for Sunday. I hope Bob says anything he wants as it is FREEDOM of the city he is getting plus freedom of speech has being around a long time...

He probably treasures this accolade more than any of the others. Good to see the family there also. Bet his dad was really, really proud. Not bad for a wee laddie from the impoverished back streets of Dublin! And he did not seem to say anything too controversial. No mention if Jeanne was there too. Nice photo.
Similar article from the Washington Post. Click on the blank space where it says photo and you will get a really nice pic.
SIR Bob Geldof was made a freeman of his home city of Dublin yesterday - as a pigeon pooped on him. The Live 8 hero, 54, joked after the ceremony: "That was a free Dublin pigeon sh*****g on my head, by the way."
Yes folks I was there. On Saturday morning I rang the organisers to see if it was open to members of the public & I was told there was an area of 500 chairs reserved but people were welcome to stand behind the barriers. I arrived at 3pm & was horrified to see how far back I would be so I thought I'd chance my arm to get in with the VIPs. I spoke to one man & he sent me to a woman. I simply said I had rang the day before & she let me in. I was in shock. I throughly enjoyed the ceremony & Bobs speech was excellent as always, jokes about pigeons included.
As I was in the VIP area I had a Programme & as soon as everyone was walking off stage I went up to Bob & he signed it & I thought then I'd be going home. I was happily in my own world looking at the latest addition to my ever growing collection of items signed by Bob when I noticed nearly everyone was gone! I looked around & saw them all heading into the Mansion House so I decided to follow & discovered there was a Wine reception for the VIPs!!!! I thought this is great! I met some lovely people who were really impressed when they discovered my secret. Then Bob appeared so I asked him could I get my picture taken with him which he agreed. It took a couple of attempts, ( I mean some people just can't take a photo so I eventually got one of the photographers to take it) It looks brilliant but unfortunately i have no way of uploading pictures to the internet. I must say the pics I took turned out well too!!
After about an hour or so people started to leave so I decided to head for a drink with people I had met & the way out this guy who bares a very close resemblance to Bob hugged me & told me I looked gorgeous. Because I was now tipsy from the wine I just thanked him & left. I'm guessing he is a relative. I'm sickened I didn't stay & find out but all in all i know I was very lucky & I really enjoyed the day!!

Go to this Showbiz Ireland site for some really great family photos. Like the comment that Peaches and Pixie are becoming like Paris and Niki Hilton, but with brains. How pretty Tiger is now. She has a beautiful smile.
Some of those photos made Bobs hair look straw like & I know what some of you will be thinking that it does look like that all the time. Take it from me who saw him up close his hair actually looked well & to clear up matters from other other topics it is not dyed!
