Not heard anything about confirmed gig yet but thought it worth highlighting to those perhaps not aware that Rats did record a guest slot on Imelda May show last week. Believe it's going out on RTE some time in July. Not sure when.
Is there an RTE equivalent of iPlayer for those outside Ireland?

Hi Suss Yes you should be able to pick this up on the net. The Imelda May show is abit like the Jules Holland show

There's some photos on the Rats Facebook page. Must be doing Rat Trap as the guy with the sax is there! Nice for them to be on tv, but still 'flogging' Rat Trap-it's not as if the song is unknown, so not really sure what the point is?

Maybe they are there to publicise some dates in Ireland later this year. If you want people to come and see you, it's a good idea to show them how good you are. More point in doing that than playing the eponymous song which would halt the ticket sales in their tracks.

Irish Union Jack. A Union Jack in the colours of the Republic of Ireland. This is to show defiance to and insult the British.
Bit strong! The guy's only trying to do us all a favour. I think the vids are pretty skilful myself - I reckon the average viewer would think the tour one is them playing Do The Rat. Great editing.
I'm not sure if (m)any Brits really find that flag offensive. There are t-shirts with union flags in other colours in every high street. Concede I'm no expert or spokesman though. Just know it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

but what is the point of a green white and gold Union flag? It is a British symbol painted in the colours of Ireland that about 100 years ago fought for its independence. I always thought Geldof had no truck with nationalism, yet here is a official video with a bastardised flag on it. What would you think of a green white and gold confederation flag? Or a red white and blue Isis flag?
There are no Union flag t shirts of any hue in our high street.
Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of the flag but, naively or not, don't get riled if it's used artistically. Here's just a few variations you could buy and wear.
I realise in this case it's potentially a bit more sensitive for some, but if I were to analyse I'd say it's just a statement of how Rats bridge the gap between the two nations. Either way I still don't think the creator needs to be slagged like that. Only my opinion; and I'll leave it there rather than get into heated debate. As I said, I don't feel so strongly.

If you start a video with a green, white and gold union flag, it's going to get a reaction. That was mine. I have no issue per se with the "fashion" use of a flag, but I doubt they would sell a Green, White & Gold union flag t-shirt with The Boomtown Rats emblazoned on it. So why should a video start with it? Ultimately what is the point of it?
"Irish Union Jack. A Union Jack in the colours of the Republic of Ireland. This is to show defiance to and insult the British".
I'm British and I'm not insulted by it. I'm more insulted that someone else deems themself able to take offence on my behalf. I'm with Suss on this and all he has said. Far too much made of it and the creator didn't deserve it.

iN my experience the vast vast majority of Irish people are not anti-British, and have no reason to 'show defiance or insult' anything British. You always get the 'tail wagging the dog' minority and bar room brigade but I'd like to think than any real or imagined animosity is more or less healed since the peace process in the North.
Think about it. We devour British tv, music, cinema, literature, football and sport in general, theatre, culture in general, and personally speaking I find I have more in common with the British than any other nation on earth. I like the English, Scots, Welsh, and those in the North who consider themselves to be either Irish or British.I have been visiting Britain regularly for more years than I care to remember and am amazed at how tolerant and welcoming and friendly the average Britain is.
I don't think anything was intended by the green, white and orange (not gold) flag.More just a reminder that the Rats are Irish, something the band themselves don't make too much of a deal about, unlike some other Irish bands.

Odd to use a union flag to remind people you are Irish.

Well the Irish tricolour is meant to symbolize the peaceful union between the green, nationalist tradition and the orange British, Unionist tradition. The white is meant to symbolize peace, so the Irish flag is a 'union' flag strictly speaking- it's just a different layout Also there is the union between the four Irish provinces inherent in it.
I doubt Bob or the boys were fretting over the video and gave it a second glance, the flag part that is.

Yes, I know. The Irish standard is predominately dark blue with a gold harp, and a variant was the predecessor of the tricolor. The Irish tricolor was apparently introduced by French republican sympathizers.
liberté (freedom: blue; green for Ireland), égalité (equality: white), fraternité (brotherhood: red; orange for Ireland).
Another flag that's all we need over here. Think I'll stay out of this one. But as Jules says getting back to the point The Rats on TV again. Has to be all good, wonder if an album will be next?. For me they can play/sing Rat trap until the cows come home. A great song that's hard to get sick off.

Depends what the comment is, but that's what I thought about what what you wrote, yes. Who are you to speak on behalf of the British?
I am not speaking on behalf of the British. I am writing about the point of a green white and orange union flag with boomtown rats emblazoned on it. And why someone decided to start a video with it.
Maybe not, but in that case it's like The Rats are Who/Jam/Oasis/Spice wannabes who because their own flag is too plain adopt another and colour it in. Cool West Britannia. They'll be shuffling into Downing Street and hob nobbing it with...

(oh Geldof did has done that as well)
Another piece of red. Comes to mind (He has lived in England longer than he did in Ireland and all his kids are English) So why not?
I don't imagine United Artistes would ever read this nor care. They think it's mega...
Not actually got around to watching in full - but who exactly are the Untied Artistes. Sounds a bit kinky to me ... Better rush home and watch the vid Can't wait ....
Oops, maybe shouldn't have watched at work just now with the sound turned up so much - there's an awful lot of F words!! Anyhow well worth a watch - and they obviously got somebody to unchain them - along with Frankie perhaps ... Unfortunately I'm still nailed to the table and chained to the desk - till 5pm anyway. But when the night comes, I'll be able to disappear
It's on RTE One 9.30pm Friday 24th July. Don't know if the Rats are on the 1st show Will find out. You should be able to get this on RTE iPlayer or YouTube
