FFS What has fewer #1s than Blue got to do with it?

Looking down the bill at Rebellion, they have as many #1s as every other act put together and that's a bit of a stretch as you have to include Happy Talk by Captain Sensible. The Sweet with Blockbuster being the only other band with a #1 to their name.

Admittedly they have fewer than Cliff Richard and Westlife, but then again only Elvis and The Beatles have more than them.

No need to buy a paper in London. I download the Telegraph onto the iPad first thing, then on the way to work I get Metro and City AM free, along with the weekly Time Out. At lunchtime I pick up the Times for free with my coffee and sandwich and in the evening I get a free Standard. Then having barely read any of them thanks to the over crowded tube I bung them all in the recycling. Well except the iPad, I'm not that stupid...

Did hundreds of ticket holders really walk out? More like a half dozen in reality. But maybe Geldof is being a bit needlessly insecure about the Rats. Their chart record speaks for itself so maybe he doesn't need to go on about the greatest rock and roll band etc.

Sometimes he just sets a bad vibe . At Cheltenham he started going on about 'this being UKIP country' for absolutely no reason. Most Rats gigs are gonna be 99% white anyway so no sure what he was getting at. Does he want to vet people for their political views before he will play for them?

The Sun has an Irish edition which sells fairly well, not that I'd ever buy it. I prefer newspapers with actual news rather than just celebrity tittle tattle.

I read somewhere there were 1800 in room. Certainly didn't thin out at front (opposite if anything) and more significantly I heard no one boo or heckle at the time. Seems like a few keyboard warriors have voiced objections after the event (no problem with that apart from the idiots who make personal and vicious comments) so that's just a difference in humour or interpretation for my money.

I'd say a handful if any actually took their cue to walk out (speculating here) but more likely Tango is right that aother act more attractive to them started elsewhere during Rats.

Funnily enough I asked a random guy at bar just before Rats came on if he felt their inclusion was incongruous with Rebellion and he said 'you've gotta love the Rats whether they're punk or not'. Only one view obviously, but seemed that one was more prevalent than the narrow minded one being flogged by press and social media. Even then a few of the friends of complainants have suggested it was just banter....

Certainly no hostililty on the night that I experienced.

Well that two of their gigs that have got mainstream press coverage in recent weeks, other one being Bob allegedly drunk in charge of a band at Carfest North. smile

I still think Geldof needs to just get on with the gigs and not be so insecure about the Rats. At Blackpool maybe he just spotted someone in a stranglers tee shire and they made off the cuff sweeping generalizations about the rest of the audience. I doubt he thinks these things through.

Getting in the papers can only help to sell tickets in the future. There are probably plenty out there totally unaware of the Rats touring and who knows it might get a few crowbarring themselves out of their sofas to check them out in the future.

I agree about the insecurity thing. It seems Geldof is still fighting the old battles with the NME, Clash, Jam, Stranglers et al and the lack of appreciation the Rats get in comparison. The mastertapes interview continually referred to his peers, whereas I would be surprised if Paul Weller gave any of them a second thought when discussing The Jam album in the same series.

Personally I think proving the Rats credentials in that context is a waste of time. Those of us who were there first time around probably made our minds up about bands back then, and are unlikely to change our outlook/prejudices.

The best way forward is to just play the songs, which all by and large do still sound contemporary and relevant, and remind people why they were the biggest band in the British Isles for a short period at the end of the seventies. The Rats are good enough in their own right without having to be part of a movement.

I suspect it was the only thing to report from Rebellion and the journalist had to pad it out to the requisite 200 words. Probably bored sh!tless drinking at the bar until Geldof gave that gem away. In some ways, it vindicates Geldof because nothing from the other acts was reported. None of them are interesting enough. Hell, I am starting to sound like Bob!

I think the insecurity thing has been there since Mondays topped the charts. Rather than just make music they and their fans would appreciate, they seemed to want to wow critics and attain critical acclamation. However, once the whole Bob and Paula bandwagon got going that was never going to happen. The music press from late 1979 was generally scathing with much of it based on personality rather than the music. Maybe the insecurity is a reaction to that.
