I'm sure all that travelling takes it's toll. Must be lots of late nights and early mornings on the 2468 motorway. Also the air connections particularly for Bob Pete and Alan as the do a lot of European dates as well. But as they say about playing in a band, it beats work any day. smile

They are all pushing on a bit now. So yes an album would be nice plus a few tight gigs. But as Lennon once said when the Beatles broke up,you have got the records to look back on. So enjoy.

Not all of them. They have a very young, energetic member of the band biggrin . Darren has enough energy to drive them all. He is incredible!

It's a shame there aren't any gigs for the rest of the year, though that 40th anniversary gig may yet take place. Last year's tour seemed to indicate that it would be an annual event to do a few dates after the festivals. I wouldn't say their schedule has been that intense. ignoring the solo gigs, 16 dates from May to September, mostly at weekends isn't that heavy. Maybe the money isn't there this time around.

I see no reason why they wouldn't return next summer for more festival appearances as they are guaranteed paydays. There are still a few, particularly Glastonbury, that they could do.

As for recording, I doubt that will happen. Two (or maybe all four) of the Ratsh!t ep songs were made for the hits album. I don't think they would release another retrospective after releasing three. including the box of the 6 LPs, in the last couple of years. I suspect the only profit made from the ep itself came from the sales of the 10" vinyl as I don't imagine there were that many downloads. Maybe Geldof has a few songs tucked away that they could record, but I can't see Universal putting any effort into releasing them.

Whatever about recording even if the had just one actually good new song and did it live I could live with that. Geldof seems happy to articulate his concerns and slight paranoia ad nauseum verbally(google, obama, facebook, cctv) but not to put those 'concerns' into songs.

But he is a songwriter in the end and I think something will eventually turn up.

I suppose he could do new songs live. I'd say that would be more likely in his solo guise. Ultimately there is nothing stopping him making music and releasing it online, but as the last thirty years or so have shown, he's not particularly prolific. Seems to be about nine years between albums (1992,2001,2010) nowadays, so expect something in 2019.

As far as I'm concerned both Alan and Darren are fully fledged Rats. They both fit well and are a good part of the band. Doubt they'd have as much energy without Darren. It wouldn't be the same without them now.

For me the only one missing in this line up Is Fingers As Cott had well jumped ship. I'm not saying anything bad about them both. They do fit in well. But they are not Rats

You could have an alternative Rats made up up Barton, Bradbury, Odlum, Beale, Moloney* and Dunn.

Personally, I see Pete Barton and especially Darren Beale as fully fledged Rats as they were the original reformers, less so Alan Dunn as he is merely a "blow in" from Geldof's solo band. Bob Bradbury was a bit of a blow in as well as his band is Hello. Dave Maloney merely filled in during Simon's sabbatical, and from what I have read Mike Odlum was a stopgap post-Barton/pre-Bradbury.

... funnily enough that's what Dr. Feelgood did replacing band members over time. Three of the current band have been in it longer than any of the originals.

I saw a rockumentary on Blondie recently when they were inducted into the Hall of Fame back in 2006 when Debbie Harry and Chris Stein refused to let Nigel Harrison and Frank Infante join them on stage. Stein said, "Our bass player Lee Fox has been working with me and Debbie for 20 years. I worked with Nigel Harrison for maybe four-and-a-half." MiaoW!

They got their recording contract with EMI before Ringo came on board. Pete Best was thrown out by Brian Epstein after his ineptness on the original recording. Love Me Do was recorded twice. A session drummer provided the drums on the single version of Love Me Do though due to a pressing error some of the early singles had Ringo's effort. Apparently Ringo hates the A side, but thinks the B side is pretty good

By the time Cott had jumped ship it was mostly over. I'm not sure if he made any contribution to V Deep, but he may have being involved on some of the songs were initially written for Mondo Bongo. I suppose reading between the lines of Visconti's biography there are doubts about his contribution to Mondo Bongo as well. The album he made absolutely zero contribution to was In The Long Grass. Cott is as important as any of the others. After all, he got them their first gig.

The Barton Rats would do nicely (or The Bradbury Rats). There are a few cases of competing original bands after the group fragments. I believe the Barton/Beale/Crowe/Roberts incarnation weren't allowed to use "The" when promoting the band. Boomtown Rats was OK, but not The Boomtown Rats.

There are a few bands who don't have a The yet are known as The whatever band. Happy Mondays are one example. They even confused themselves calling their album The Best of The Happy Mondays! I'd rather all bands dropped the The, except for of course The The, who would then be known as The. The really screws up your MP3 ordering.

I have a recorded interview of Geldof. It lasts about 45 minutes and is largely about the use of 'the'. He 'had' to have a name which used 'the'. Perhaps he has an obsession with it

That's my point. Cott did not like the root Geldof and co were taking. So he left

Glad Geldof insisted on The BR. Sounds better. The Human League mainly prefaced their name with The but would sometimes drop it. Pretty sure their Greatest Hits is simply titled Human League.
